Hate Jews? Facebook Welcomes You!
Anyone who thinks that the holocaust did not happen now has a place to vent their opinions. It seems that Facebook allows discussion about what the Nazis did to the Jewish people during World War II. What is amazing is some of the hatred that is being spread by those that deny the holocaust happened and their hatred of Jews.
I realize that social networking sites should be free of censorship. But what do you do when people post messages that are full of hate towards a specific race? According to an article over at TechCrunch this is exactly what is happening.
But Holocaust denial is totally cool because it fosters open discussion. Facebook wants to “be a place where people can discuss all kinds of ideas, including controversial ones.” Even, apparently, the discussion of the idea that someone might be a “Nigger faggot, Jew nosed cunt.” That’s just one of many hateful messages I found written on a Holocaust denial site on Facebook.
Brian Cuban is making the removal of these sites a personal mission. He’s arguing the law. He’s arguing terms of service. He’s arguing common sense and decency. These groups are clearly little more than excuses to spew hatred towards Jews, and Facebook is too timid to do anything about it. The first amendment doesn’t apply to private companies. So why is Facebook so willing to take a stand when it comes to hungry babies, but won’t do a damn thing when it comes to the Holocaust?
If Facebook doesn’t want to take a moral or ethical stand on the issue, it can easily make a case that the groups violate its terms of service. These groups violate multiple sections of the TOS, particularly Section 3. There’s an easy way out of this for Facebook, and it also happens to be the right thing to do. Why in the world must it draw a line in the sand and then stand on the same side as Holocaust deniers is beyond me.
I believe that Facebook should take a stand and either remove or block messages of hate that appears on its site. Discussion is one thing. Hate is another.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

There is a big difference between supporting the opinions and hosting the group.
Why not leave them to spout their narrow minded views to all the world? Are we scared that our more inclusive views would not survive the onslaught?
Light is a great disinfectant. Leave them to compete with other views in an open forum. What better place than Facebook?

Saying “Why in the world must it draw a line in the sand and then stand on the same side as Holocaust deniers is beyond me” does make some sense.
I see a lot of merit in Simon’s comment in relation to how I’d ideally approach these things, but at the same time when you make rules as a social networking site you’re kind of setting up a playground, with children as users otherwise you wouldn’t have rules. Its part of the appeal of using a group or a forum… to have that childish freedom. As a child on playground, It’s always seems clear to me that when the line in the sand has been drawn, and someone crosses it but whoever is supposed to be responsible for enforcing the rules simply doesn’t care, the party who drew the line has indeed taken a side.
I know it sounds very petty, but it really is the reality of how things work on forums or facebook groups or whatever similar service we’re talking about. In the case of Facebook, people carelessly throw their full names and enormous chunks of information about their personal life as part of this as well, so although I don’t use facebook groups, I imagine that would be an aspect to consider.
Sometimes I feel that if you set up rules, they should be enforced, and sometimes I feel that they should be broken, but the common denominator is that in either case its all about ME ME ME ME ME ME. Because of this, when I hear someone complaining I suspect it’s also for them, a “ME” thing. I don’t mind in this case (because It doesn’t effect “ME” “NOW”) and sort of wish the guy good luck in the legal arena as far as this goes. When a person goes up against a corporation, I have to automatically hope all the best for that person… but that’s a different topic entirely.
Also I should add one thing, which does sort of hit on hoping for the best in regards to the little guy. I agree that leaving people to spout their BS is often self cleansing, but there is an evil in wilfully hosting the content for profit. There’s an incredible number of ways to legally make big money if you’re willing to not not have a conscience. Publishing a white supremacy guns magazine, or making up BS certifications to sell to the food service industry (looks good on the wall but doesn’t mean anything), for example. This thing on facebook isn’t in the same ballpark, however it certainly isn’t just business as usual to allow people to host that content… you do have to be okay with them hosting it.
I think I’ve arrived at the conclusion (once again) that people who make decisions in corporations need to be held accountable, and if someone can show they were somehow personally damaged, then they deserve compensation for it.
Recently a milk manufacturer in China was responsible for the death of a number of infants and toddlers. They had been watering down the milk and adding a foreign chemical which acted as a catalyst for the protein in milk to replicate.. something like that, I’m unclear of how it worked. They got the dosage wrong, babies all over died, and as a result, people who headed that corporation were put through the judicial process and found guilty of killing those children through their decision to water down milk and screw with it in ways that weren’t legal. I’m not a fan of the death penalty, but given that China has the death penalty, it was refreshing to know that somewhere in the world, corporate bottom feeders weren’t above the same law as every day citizens.
I don’t know if that’s part of the frustration, corporate slime, or if its simply someone who has found this as the expression of an emotional outburst, or has a pattern of anger or whatever else, but if he’s right then he’s right and that seems fairly basic.

Well, we have freedom of speech in America because we wanted protection against religious persecution. As far as laws go, we really want to make sure we err on the side of caution when it comes to censorship, lest what we now consider mainstream speech someday become a crime that we could be prosecuted for.
That is good for the arena of NOT ARRESTING SOMEONE for their ideas.
But when it comes to PUBLISHING or restating someone else’s ideas, you are not legally obligated to allow absolutely everything. If you decide to ban a certain type of speech or ideas from your web server, you are not arresting anyone, nor infringing on their religious freedom. You are just telling them, “No thanks. You’ll have to take that stuff somewhere else.”
It just means you have principles. It means that you believe that there are some moral standards that people should abide by, and you have enough integrity to say so.
AFAIK, if you host it, you endorse it.

Just because they publish it doesn’t mean I have to read it.
In fact, we’d probably all be better off not reading Facebook to begin with.
That aside, if it’s kept factual and not personal, freedom of speech covers things we don’t want to hear also.
The ACLU just offered its services to someone who asked about getting an ACLU SUX tag for their car if they couldn’t.
Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.

All I have to say is that the right to free speech is wonderful! However, hates crimes are illegal, and if there are threatening messages, then it turns from free speech to a hate crime, and America’s constitution does not support that, so……
Facebook should DEFINATELY delete the group. I can’t believe they’ve allowed this to go on, and much more… why do people believe the holocaust didn’t happen? I’ve been to many places in Europe, and there’s no way to say it didn’t happen. I just don’t understand people that think this…. Are they retarded or do they just fail to see the truth because they don’t want to admit their mistakes?

#1 I know the holocaust happened both of my grandparents died at Auschwitz.
#2 Freedom of speech is a joke expose government corruption and see what happens to you.
#3 Genicide still continues only now it is not just the jews it is children of all races.
Only you can’t do anything to the people that abuse, rape and murder these children because they work for the government. I have the documents and evidence to prove all this but they are making too much money to stop this. The government pays Federal bonus money for these children to be stolen and adopted out. They don’t even care if they go to good homes once they have their money their job is done. I have been trying to help these children for a long time but nobody cares. Their is a pamphlet that shows which children to take and how much they are worth. Some are worth more then others example: special needs children, multi-racial children or children who require medication. Some of these children are put on medication just to make them worth more not because there is anything wrong with them. Hitler killed my grandparents and this government agency is responsible for my son’s death. Now they have taken my grandson and he will probably die too and there is nothing I can do about it. I have been everywhere and found it hard to believe that nobody really cares about these children. However it is true I did find one person high enough in government that was trying to stop this. She was a United States Senator from Georgia named Nancy Shaefer. Unfortunately when she tried to get help with this problem they took her Senate seat away from her. I give you her name so you can check it out for yourself. I know you people probably won’t believe me because this sounds so bizarre. It is done behind closed doors and most Americans don’t even know it is going on. When they do find out they still don’t want to believe that they could be so blind about our government so they get mad at the person who opened their eyes to the truth. I for one had no idea just how evil these people could get until I presented my evidence to the Governor, the Media, several Senators and Legislatures. Upon doing so they issued a warrant for my arrest. I went to jail and got out only to be rearrested and held for 2 weeks where I was treated badly. I was threatened with my life and driven out of my home. I now live in hiding so I can continue to spread the word. Like they say truth is stranger than fiction. I will continue my fight as long as I can because people need to know what is really going on. Before you reply with hateful comments I just ask that you research first. I am only trying to help innocent children and I feel the only way to do that is to make people aware of what is really going on.

Oh please, you close-minded screw heads. Once they censor the deniers, they’ll come after you and your cause du jour. Censorship is wrong, no matter how it rears its head. Denying the deniers just sets the stage for the stormtroopers to move in and round you up for your “liberal” thinking. You’ll bend over backwards to limit our personal freedoms because you’re offended. That’s no better than the Nazis.
