Cheap Netbooks Becoming The Norm

As the recession continues to tighten our pocketbooks, more and more folks are buying Netbooks in lieu of the traditional laptops or desktop computer systems. But what is even more interesting is that Microsoft contends that these pint sized laptops use Windows. But is that really true? Well according to some who work in the computer field, Linux is still a viable alternative. It seems that at one recent European conference, Linux prevailed.

Systems running Ubuntu with a screen like the one below, seemed to be the primary OS being used by conference attendees.

So what are the real numbers on who is using Windows and who is using Linux on the Netbooks? Who knows for sure. But I’m using Linux on my mini. What about you? Windows or Linux on your netbook?

Let us know.

Comments welcome.

I love open source and linux, but UNR and linux in general runs like a dog on my Dell Mini 9. OS X and XP run much faster, but XP is my choice for various reasons.

I just bought a Dell 9″ Mini and it has Ubuntu. So did my dad. We love the OS. Easiest set up dad ever had with a new computer (and he’s set up thousands as a former school tech coordinator). This is my first REAL Linux machine, even though I’ve toyed with the OS (several different flavors) over the years.

I am using Windows 7 beta, Linux (Ubuntu and Xandros) and Mac OS X on netbooks. When running Ubuntu, I am using GNOME, not the Remix interface shown in the article.

No netbooks here. I just use older laptops that need a bit of TLC. I love my Dell Inspiron 3500 (PII-300, 192MBs, 3GB HD, XP Home, wireless) for light duty like streaming audio with Winamp and checking email, using my IBM ThinkPad T23 (PIII-1133, 512MBs, 30GB, XP Pro, wireless) for chat out by my BBQ, and my Gateway CX210X for anything that needs a bit of power.

Looked at netbooks, and a 9 inch LCD is just too small. I’ll take the old laptops instead.

Thanks for the comments and for sharing your experiences with us. It is appreciated.

I love netbooks but hate the software that the likes of Acer and ASUS shoe-horn onto it. McAfee adds toolbars to everything – robbing you of space, one came with Office 2007, and its huge space-hogging ribbon. The technology is cool, they just aren’t thinking it through to the software, its enough to make you go Linux.

I’m using Xandros Linux (soon changing to Ubuntu) on my netbook.

Using XP SP3 on the new 1000HE…since I don’t feel like doing a ton of research on how to attempt to get as much time as possible out of the battery. The tool Asus put on there works just fine under XP.

On the 4G Surf…came with that idiotic version of Xandros that Asus put on there. Tried the remix/normal versions of Linux on it with 2 GB…but seemed to take too much of the 7″ screen space. Ended up with XP…since I could easily tweak the screen to 1024X600 at full screen with no scrolling with a hacker’s tool I found.

I think because I own a Mac, it would be best for me to have a Windows machine. I really like playing around with linux, and because it would be a separate computer, it would probably work out fine for me. But, on the other hand, it would be nice to have windows to play around with, theme it like I want, make it pretty… and finally, being able to try out some of the Windows apps I never get to try because I have a Mac as my main machine! (and I am not saying I don’t like my mac, I love it, but I feel like I am missing out on a few apps that are out there… )

I have been a PC user since 1998. As long as you maintain window updates, and use GOOD antivirus. No issues. I have tried all brands over the years. I just bought my 2nd HP, a HP HDX 16. I love it. I have always been curious of a Mac, but at $2799.00 for a comparable size HP that I paid $1100 less for. Im not that curious. The economy just doesnt support a $2799 for a laptop these days. I work at home, and Im a PC. I wish you all the best of luck in this crazy economy.

What Do You Think?
