E-Mail:

Does Windows Dominant Netbooks Over Linux?

Numbers don’t lie. The fact is that Windows continues its dominance over Linux on the new netbooks. What is even more surprising is that even in Europe Windows netbooks out sell Linux boxes by a wide margin. So what makes Windows so attractive to us PC users? One word. Familiarity.

We Windows users have been using Windows for so long it is hard to change. We are a lazy bunch and don’t want to retrain ourselves to learn a new operating system. Even if Linux offers a better user experience, we continue to use Windows because it works, is compatible with our software and for the most part is the OS that comes preinstalled on a new system we purchase.

So how bad are the numbers? It depends on who you believe. Microsoft says that 96% of new netbooks sell with Windows. Some say that number is high. No matter. People will buy a stripped down starter edition of Windows 7 just because that is what they know. If you ask the average person on the street what Linux is, most may say it is the name of a car.

This is not a put down for Linux users. It is just facts. Plain and simple. Do not shoot the messenger. LOL
