I’ve also been partial about ACER based on passed experiences. But last year I got an Acer Aspire One and surprisingly I’ve had 0 problems with it. For a cheap netbook, it’s built quite well. Few days ago, I got a 13in Timeline… So far I’m loving it.. I hope ACER has really improved it’s QC. I’ll be extensively testing this unit within the week…

From all I’ve seen as far as feedback from customers (I work in a very large electronics retail chain in AU)- Acer is abysmal in service & support.

As others have previously posted (eloquently or not)- Acer may make whatever claims they wish to make, puffed-up bravado does not win friends.

Tech support is critical. Until Acer takes this key point seriously, they’ll end up investing time, energy, & money into a hole.

Sub- $1000 laptops are everywhere now- most notably from Toshiba & Dell- my money is on them.

Acer sucks. Gateway sucks. eMachines sucks.
Acer eats Gateway and eMachines. Acer tripple-sucks.

I can say this because I’ve got a PoS gateway laptop that I got a year ago sitting right next to me, and my school has eMachines and Acer computers.

Tech support aside, the unit seems solid. Acer computers run fine, but as others have stated, until tech support changes, you won’t see a business market.

on that end, if you sell that aspire timeline to the students going to college, its hard to find someone who would beat it. under a thousand for 8 hours of battery life? only Mac seems to have that and they cost 3x the price. Look to see acer crawling up the ranks with this idea.

In my experience, I would not recommend an Acer to anyone without significant in-the-trenches experience in chasing down tech support and/or updates/drivers for archane systems. And then, only for noncritical personal systems, not for business. Acer’s tech support offerings for things as simple as updated drivers and BIOS flash update files is next to non-existant. I’ve had no issues with the quality of their hardware, but you best be prepared to exercise your best shoot-from-the-hip self-support to fix any problems — you’re on your own.

Acer will not be able to touch either HP or Dell in the business market until they actually develop and field a working tech support department.
