Acer Throws Down Gauntlet At HP and Dell

When Acer scooped up Gateway the company made it clear that they had their sights on HP and Dell. Acer seems to be throwing down the gauntlet as in one single night they introduced over 20 new computer products. From laptops to netbooks, including high end systems that feature sleek Mac like aluminum bodies, Acer is making a statement to the #1 and #2 computer companies. According to an article over at Yahoo Tech:

The Acer Aspire Timeline series is a completely new line, specifically designed for longer battery life – not with bulkier and heavier batteries, but with existing technology. And more impressively, it does so without breaking the $1,000 barrier. Whether it’s the Timeline 3810T (13.1-inch) or the Timeline 5810T (15.6-inch) laptop, each runs on an Intel Ultra Low Voltage processor, which is both powerful enough and extremely energy efficient. Every Timeline laptop will feature an LED widescreen and come standard with a solid state drive, energy-efficient technologies that already exist in the marketplace. According to Acer, the Timeline series also uses a new air flow technology, redirecting cool air along the bottom side of the laptops.

But that’s not all. The new Timeline laptops have sleek aluminum tops and measure only an inch thick, which not only gives them an elegant look but also makes them light and extremely travel friendly.

It also wouldn’t be an Acer overhaul without updates to the company’s popular netbook line. Acer launched a thinner version of the Aspire One (10-inch), measuring less than an inch thick now. Most of the parts and features remain the same, though. Of the two netbooks that were launched at this event, the Acer Aspire One(11.6-inch) was arguably the most talked-about. For one, it’s the first netbook that uses an 11.6-inch widescreen. Though it’s not the biggest screen on a netbook (the Dell Mini Insipiron 12 has a 12-inch widescreen), the length of the system enabled the addition of a full size keyboard – a first on a netbook. A full size keyboard and a decent size screen are potential game changers in the netbook category.

There are more models that were introduced by Acer. There was no pricing available for any of the new models.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but Acer’s rep here in Australia is appalling. Every admin I know wouldn’t touch an Acer server or desktop box in a fit. Their parts and support process is tragic.

Try their website and follow all the dead links and loops to nowhere.

Only Acer’s laptops sell here and, of these, only the AspireOne has any kudos.

Any ascertion that they pose a threat to HP or Dell is risible

I’ve got to agree with anon, they do have a pretty terrible reputation in Aus. I have to hope that this overhaul includes an update of their support and services, otherwise, for me at least, there would be no attraction in buying one.

But you have to realize the cost cutting that Acer does is because they use recycled parts and only use a few new parts in making their Desk Tops and Laptop computers. You need to read and understand what you are getting when you by your pc. I like the way dell has steped up there customer service . They have actuall taken away their customer service from the foreign countries . Now you get a amerciacn or english speaking agent . And when you don’t understand something when you are ordering your computer . The agent on the phone with you will take the time to explain the whole order with you and any upgrades you might want to consider. The online and phone tech support is really good also. I had a computer with 1tig hard drive and the partition that they used went bad through the programing . The tech sent someone out in two days and installed a new hard drive . That is great customer service to me since i’m a on air radio host and need my computer to keep up to date on different subjects that I jot down for quick referencing . So buyer be ware to the Acer chep seats . Yep cheap . Th quality is not there either . Its just apples to oranges . I just purchased for our radio station a dell 15 laptop for our moble radio shows. It has 4 gig mem , 320 hard drive and a cd/dvd burner , wireless card , media card reader . For a whopping $509.00 , Well Acers comparing price is $ 679.00 . Wow qualty of used parts for more . Who figured. Thanks for reading the Radio Geek . Dave

In my experience, I would not recommend an Acer to anyone without significant in-the-trenches experience in chasing down tech support and/or updates/drivers for archane systems. And then, only for noncritical personal systems, not for business. Acer’s tech support offerings for things as simple as updated drivers and BIOS flash update files is next to non-existant. I’ve had no issues with the quality of their hardware, but you best be prepared to exercise your best shoot-from-the-hip self-support to fix any problems — you’re on your own.

Acer will not be able to touch either HP or Dell in the business market until they actually develop and field a working tech support department.

Tech support aside, the unit seems solid. Acer computers run fine, but as others have stated, until tech support changes, you won’t see a business market.

on that end, if you sell that aspire timeline to the students going to college, its hard to find someone who would beat it. under a thousand for 8 hours of battery life? only Mac seems to have that and they cost 3x the price. Look to see acer crawling up the ranks with this idea.

Acer sucks. Gateway sucks. eMachines sucks.
Acer eats Gateway and eMachines. Acer tripple-sucks.

I can say this because I’ve got a PoS gateway laptop that I got a year ago sitting right next to me, and my school has eMachines and Acer computers.

it might be easier to value any opinions if the poster could actually spell….Acer has their “sites” ??? what – ? web”sites???” oh- I can’t see , I’ve lost my site!”…and I am wondering how much bigger a 1 TIG hard drive is….sounds very big though….goodbye English – …hello compublab…

From all I’ve seen as far as feedback from customers (I work in a very large electronics retail chain in AU)- Acer is abysmal in service & support.

As others have previously posted (eloquently or not)- Acer may make whatever claims they wish to make, puffed-up bravado does not win friends.

Tech support is critical. Until Acer takes this key point seriously, they’ll end up investing time, energy, & money into a hole.

Sub- $1000 laptops are everywhere now- most notably from Toshiba & Dell- my money is on them.

I’ve also been partial about ACER based on passed experiences. But last year I got an Acer Aspire One and surprisingly I’ve had 0 problems with it. For a cheap netbook, it’s built quite well. Few days ago, I got a 13in Timeline… So far I’m loving it.. I hope ACER has really improved it’s QC. I’ll be extensively testing this unit within the week…

Hello Peter,
Please let us know what you think of the new unit.
