Two Wheel Car From GM + Segway

Posted by on Apr 7, 2009 | 10 Comments

General Motors and Seqway have teamed up to bring us a proto-type of a two wheeled vehicle that is part Segway and part two seat-er car. The all electric vehicle is said to go 35 miles between charges and cost only 35 cents to charge fully. The vehicle was demonstrated on the Today show this morning [April 7, 2009] and looks very interesting. Top speed is 35 m.p.h. which is surprising.

On the NBC site it also states that:

The 300-pound prototype runs on a lithium-ion battery and uses Segway’s characteristic two-wheel balancing technology, along with dual electric motors. It’s designed to reach speeds of up to 35 miles-per-hour and can run 35 miles on a single charge.

The companies did not release a projected cost for the vehicle, but said ideally its total operating cost — including purchase price, insurance, maintenance and fuel — would total between one-fourth and one-third of that of the average traditional vehicle.

No pricing has been released as of yet. The vehicle also has a code name of Puma as of this article. Maybe GM can reinvent itself after all.

But would buy one?  Let us know what you think.

Comments welcome.

I honestly think the people who will buy this vehicle will be getting wet over saving the environment rather than caring about their personal safety.

still, it’s a cool concept, and I like the idea that GM can do something other than big dumb V8′s.

Way to go GM! I would buy one in an instant. I have been following the Segway since its’ inception and I am just thrilled to see GM at least considering something other than you gas guzzling “old geezer” comfort oriented vehicles. This world can no longer afford those antiquated vehicles. Keep up the innovation.

What market segment will purchase this “car?” Maybe big cities like NYC, LA and Chicago where you can’t drive over 30. Three cities with a huge number of cabs and among the highest in accidents. Sounds like a great place to drive a car with no protection. Not to mention weather issues, rain, snow, heat, etc. It’s over 95 degrees here in Texas most of the year and when it’s not, it’s raining or freezing, so no one will ever use one. Want to protect the environment and save money? Take the bus.

Yes!!! I would absolutely buy this car. I could see using it just to commute to work or maybe short trips to the store or something. I’m very excited about this car (if the price is right). We always think our breakthrough car will be a flying car. I think this is it!
