Ford Using Opera Browser For Their In Dash Computer
Ford Motor Company is going to be installing in dash computer systems that will incorporate a host of new features. On of the features is the ability to search the Internet for stuff. What is surprising, at least to me, is that the Ford system will use Opera for the browser. In a statement from Opera staff they state the following:
“Opera’s vision has always been about giving people access to the full Web anytime, anywhere. No example showcases this better than delivering a fast, feature-rich Web browser to a vehicle. This solution will allow Ford truck and van owners to maintain a virtual work environment with access to all of the important files, information, and applications they need on a daily basis.”
Ford describes one aspect of their technology as being:
HIGH-SPEED INTERNET ACCESS
Full Internet connectivity with all your favorite sites is available right from your vehicle with the available high-speed Sprint® Mobile Broadband Network.†
Accessing information from a manufacturer — diagrams or blueprints, for example — is one of the many useful online functions that’ll make your job easier and more productive.
There are other features which will make this Ford work truck a real technology work horse. A driver will also be able to sync their work from the truck back to the office. This will be like a computer on wheels and should increase the efficiency of those using the vehicle.
Comments welcome.
PS The reason I was surprised that Ford chose Opera as their browser is because I would of suspected Microsoft to have paid Ford to use Internet Explorer. LOL

Great idea. I just won’t last long. Eventually Ford will have to replace Opera with something else.
I use Opera as my primary browser, so it is not because I think Opera is bad or flawed. Rather the problem is bad web designers and flawed decisions by people in power at companies. There are just too many useful web sites that flat out do not work with Opera and do not have appear to have any incentive to correct this.
It is a shame, because I prefer Opera features over Firefox any day.
