Who’s Using A Kodak Printer? Opinions Needed

Posted by on Mar 31, 2009 | 169 Comments

Kodak is filling the airwaves where I live with a host of Kodak printer commercials. The main theme is how others like HP, Canon or whoever, are ripping us off in the price they charge for ink. Kodak claims that their ink is so cheap, it borders on being almost free. OK. I exaggerated slightly.

Last evening I went over to Amazon and took a look at some of the Kodak printers they were selling. I also read quite a few reviews that was a mixed bag of nuts. Some love the printers while others did not. The all in one design feature, some with the ability to send faxes, seemed reasonably priced and on par with the cost from other OEM’s. But I have been an HP fan for years and struggle with the premise of changing brands.

So this is where you come in. If you own a Kodak printer share your opinion with us, good or bad. What do you like and dislike about the printer? Are the cartridges really as cheap as Kodak says they are?

Comments welcome.

I dont own one but I service them and they seem to have a high fail rate, and poor image quality compared to other leading brands. I also noted that if you compare the HP XL cartridges to the print volume of the kodaks’ the HP printers come out on top. HP has been in the game a long time, cheaper ink is not a reason to trust this new manufacturer yet.

I have bought a Kodak ESP 3 AIO printer two weeks ago. The PROS are that the ink is cheap. $9.95 for Black and $14.94 for color. Or you can purchase a combo pack for $24.95. THe retail price of the printer was $89.95 and it came with one Black and one Color cartridge. NO cable though. What I like best is that the Print Head is replaceable. I got burned by EPSON a few years ago. Their Print Head only lasted 2 years. After that time I could not print and received a message on screen to send my printer back to Epson for “part replacement”? CON is that ink is so cheap because they push the Easy Share Gallery, that menas that every time you power up the printer the Kodak Easy Share software starts up. I have NOT been able to find anything in preferences or startup to get around this??? Bottom line is, I am glad I bought Kodak and I love the cheap, EXCELLENT ink they provide me with.

1st generation Kodak inkjet printers (white/cream colored printers) have had tech problems. The new black ESP models appear to have fewer moving parts, so they’ll likely do better. I’ve been very happy with print quality and ink costs. Less happy with the failure of print-heads that were supposed to be “perminent.” As for the software: must be a preferrences issue, because starting my Kodak printer doesn’t automatically launch EasyShare software (I’ve removed ES from my startup folder, I don’t find it as useful as Picasa).

I have a Kodak ESP 9 AiO. First impression was that this thing is BIG. Has a rather large footprint on my desk compared to the HP 6210 it replaced.

Installation was fairly easy and trouble free.

Printer would not recognize Avery 8160 address label paper. Failed to print and displayed “incorrect paper size” message.

After an hour on the phone with Kodak support (not based in North America) it was determined this was a hardware issue with the printer. I actually had to wait while the tech support guy called another tech support person. His excuse was that “this is a new product so I am not very familiar with it”. I find that rather unacceptable.

When the printer performs an optical scan of the paper prior to printing it does not like the Avery paper for some reason. No solution was offered by Kodak but I was able to figure out a work-around to “fool” the printer into accepting the paper. Just put in a sheet of regular paper for the first page and all is good.

Wireless connectivity was problematic. The ESP 9 connected to my network just fine but I could not print via wireless using my laptop. Every attempt to print via wireless caused my laptop to immediately loose connection with the printer. NOT with the wireless network…just with the printer.

Kodak issued a firmware update to address wireless connectivity issues but this did not fix this issue. I eventually configured a static IP for the printer and problem solved.

I also experienced issues with the quality of red colors. The reds just seem off. Mostly when printing color documents (not photos).

It has been a good printer overall. I have not experienced any other paper related issues. Wireless connectivity has been great since switching to a static IP for the printer.

Scanning and copying are fast. I like the Kodak AiO Home Center software that comes with the printer.

In my experience claims made by Kodak about number of documents/photos per cartridge seem to be accurate.

Of course, I LOVE the price of the cartridges. $25 for both, SWEEET!!!

I bought a Kodak ESP3 printer a week aga at Walmart. I installed the software on a Sony Vista 32 computer and he worked fine. I also have a network installed with 3 computers , the host with the Kodak printer is sharing the printer with an Windows XP computer and also worked as i expected. Now my problem with the third computer on my network, a Dell computer with Windows Vista 64 installed. It is impossible to get the printer working, at first i got a error saying there was the wrong driver installed on the host computer (The Sony). Thre is no separate driver available for this printer, only a programm named AIO_install,exe.. The other error i got was “Printer is not connected to the nettwor”or the is failt spelled”. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software advised by a Kodak employee but notting will work. So if you have a network with a Vista 64 system installed, stay away of this printer. Kodak has to develop a new working driver even for a Windows 64 system.

I Bought a Kodak ESP-3 printer from staples like a lot of
people to take advantage of the cheap ink. I also own an Hp
all in one and so I can get some sort of comparison between the two. I find the pictures you print usually look better on the HP
printer as the Kodak produces very dark pictures that even in
high quality mode on photo paper look somewhat grainy. The Kodak also seems limited in its color pallet no mate how colorful the picture is . The scanner seems to work fine and does a good job overall of scanning text & pictures. One thing I like about the scanning software is that you can scan a batch of
stuff in and it will save it in a lower box on the screen and then once you are done you can select all of the scans and send them to a particular folder of your choosing. This can not be done on my HP as it requires you to select a folder for each individual scan which can be quite a pain when you have a lot of work you are trying to scan. One of the problems I have found with the Kodak software is that you have to run your screen resolution at a certain setting in order for you to see it’s full interface without having to use
the scroll bars on the side and bottom of the program. I find this to be quite a pain as I like to have my icons display fairly large on my screen because I don’t have the best vision and
have some light sensitivity issues. On my 22inch monitor
the Kodak start interface is only a box about 4by4 inches which I find to be quite small and a poor use of my monitor.
I have had no technical trouble yet with this printer but have only owned it for a few months. I personally don’t find the ink
lasts much longer than the HP and seems to print at about the same speed. Overall not to bad a printer for quick jobs
that don’t have to be perfect. If you need really good photo
quality on a regular basis though, I would go with another printer, perhaps a Cannon or HP photo printer.
That’s just my opinion so far . Hopefully they will get better in the future, only time will tell . I hope this will help someone in their shopping expeditions for a new printer.
Thanks for reading my blurp and every one take care.
    Mike.

I have recently purchased the ESP 3 printer and find that the scanning of photos and documents is EXCELLENT if you either know how to manually adjust the settings, OR simply tell the Kodak software to use its improvement mode. The printing of photos and documents is definitely better than any of the other brands that I have seen or tried. I used to use Brother, HP and Lexmark. Of those Lexmark did the best scanning, I was disappointed with the photo printing on the Brother and HP, but the Kodak seems AWESOME on anything that I have printed. My sister has either the 5500 or 5700 and the only issue they have had is with getting the faxing work on a phone line with an answering machine. The actual scanning, copying and printing seems to be above anything else we have tried in the same price range for the actual printer. The cheaper ink is just a very welcome added bonus.

I BOUGHT AN ESP 3 FOR MY NIECE FOR CHRISTMAS BECAUSE THE HP SHE HAD WE WERE BUYING INK EVERY 2 MONTHS, SHE LOVES TO PRINT. I SEEN THE KODAK AND DECIDED TO GIVE IT A SHOT. BOUGHT THE PRINTER IN LATE DECEMBER AND IT IS NOW APRIL AND HAVEN’T HAD TO BUY INK YET. THIS THING IS AMAZING AND THE PRINT QUALITY IS BETTER THAN ANY HP FOR $89 SO ALL YOU HP FAN BOYS CAN FIND ANOTHER BLOG. I HAVE A $300 CANNON THAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT I AM THINKING OF REPLACING WITH THIS KODAK. NO PROBS AT ALL WITH INSTALL, AND TO THE PERSON THAT COULDN’T GET THE EASY SHARE FROM COMING ON AT STARTUP, GO TO WINDOWS START, THEN RUN, THEN MSCONFIG, THEN STARTUP TAB, UNCHECK EASY SHARE, THEN APPLY.

I purchased a Koday ESP-7 printer in January 2009 as a Christmas gift for my wife but with the Kodak advertising, there just weren’t any available.

Setup was easy and the noise the machine makes was surprising but print was good. An 8X10 on kodak premium paper looked great. Then the machine started to spit out blank pages. Tech support assisted with getting the machine going again. BUT….if you leave the printer alone for at least 2 days, it will not print, just gives you pretty white blank sheets.

Tech support sent me a new print head and that resolved the problem for about 5 days. Then the blank page disease reappeared again. This time tech support sent me a new print head and a replacement printer. Great. Worked almost a week before the disease struck. Kodak knows they have a problem with these ESP printers but have done nothing about it so far. At present I am demanding a refund on monies spent on the purchase of the printer less money wasted in buying ink. Overall, buying an HP and paying out the nose for ink would have actually cheaper and less nerve racking.

So I work with HP and by our calculations they only really save you a dollar a month. Are you willing to give up HP proven reliability and performance to save a buck per month on ink? Check out http://www.hp.com/go/thetruthaboutprinting for more info.

I own a Kodak ESP 3. It hasn’t failed on me as of yet. I’ve owned it for a few months now. The only cons to the printer are that it’s kind of loud, and sometimes it grabs more than one sheet of paper. This only happens when using heavier weight papers and you have to feed them in one at a time. I don’t do much printing, but other than that it’s been pretty reliable.

I am a voulenteer at a literacy oganization in Montreal and we have Kodak ESP 7 it works fine on the admin computer but after installing the Software on other computers on the network I get, the “Not able to find printer ” error message.
Everthing is OK on my network it is not wireless and all my computers SEE the printer until I install the Kodak SW.

Kodak Help desk repeatedly hung up on me after trying to get their help,

If anyone is aware of a driver I need to install or a Fix I would appreciate the Help

    Thanks

I have had nothing but problems. When I print black text say from MS Word or any other text program my printer uses the color cartridge more than the black cartridge to print black. I have called and called but talking to India is not the answer. I got a arrogant answer from Kodak tech support and they said the printer uses color and black because the text is really gray. What a load of crap. No other printer that I have used never uses the color cartridge to print black not HP, not Epson and not Lexmark. So far I have used 3 color cartridges to 1..4 black cartridges to print only black text. So much for their ads about saving money on ink. Never would I advise anyone to buy a Kodak printer.

I bought an ESP 9..To put it bluntly it is a nighmare! Out of the box the printer found my Wifi network and once the wep was in it was happy.or so I thought..Printed a test page only got pink and washed out black…. printing screen shots on plain paper.Did all the maintenance user can changed inks still the same thing.left it at that and installed the software..on both laptop and desktop.Adjusted the firewall settings to allow what I should.Still nothing… so I added the rpinter manually made the added on printer the default could print from desk but not laptop.opened up the software and tried to scan..got error code that could not be resolved on line support or with phone support…also would not print form software because the software still could not find the printer.Kodak is well aware that there are huge problems with some hookups and when finally after 3 whole days of loading unloading claenaing restarting whil on the phone with support they passed me on tothe senior assistance team who told me that to completley uninstall and clean again and download the new software when it came out on May 15.. I did that.. had to find and install printer and scanner drivers which were in the software this time but did not install( the original software did not have a scanner driver in it???)On Tuesday I will try yet aqgain with phone support to get this thing going. What a crock! I am no neophyte at this I have been in both software and hardware for over 30 years. My desktop is a Sony P4 3.2 with 4G Ram and XP pro
laptop is a panasonic 1.6 centrino with 1.5 G Ram and XP Pro
Wifi Network is Siemens Router D-link adapter on desktop and Intel wireless in Panasonic…Also tried a D-Link router same results. Would I buy Kodak again? not a chance in He!! would I recommend it ? ditto

I bought the Kodak Esp 3 and the software would not install. It kept saying that it was getting interrupted and I needed to restart the installation process, buy nothing was interrupting it. I have windows vista with a 64 bit processor and I am wondering if that is why it won’t work. If so what similiar printer will work.
    Thanks

  • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

    Hello Corinne,
I know that the HP 915 series has 64 bit drivers for Vista & XP. I am sure there are others that also support 64 bit. Have you called Kodak for support and have they confirmed that the software won’t work, or a bad disk, or is there another driver available? Just some thoughts.

  • Bob Kolesar

I have a Kodak ESP3, rather this is my 4th ESP3 since purchasing one last August. I purchased it to replace my HP5550 in order to save on the cost of ink.
I have had no problems setting it up either with XP or Vista. The color is excellent using Kodak or Office Depot Photo paper.
After the first month, the printer started to print a four inch band of black on every print out. Contacting Kodak Service, they snet me a new print head and new print cartridges. This worked for another month. Then the printer started printing the black band again. This time kodak sent me a replacement printer. I had to give them a credit card number to assure that I would return the old one within thirty days.
The new one worked for two months, at which time the scanner would only scan have a page. Thus, my second replacement. This printer worked until december, at which time it would print one page and hang up. I had to turn the power off and restart it to print another sheet. They sent me a third printer. In February, this printer started printing the black band, and I got my fourth replacement. So far, this one is still working. . If it starts having problems, I will just chuck it and go back to an HP printer.

I worked as a Kodak Technician for almost two years until they (KODAK) decided to turn the outsourcing over to the Philippines or where ever. The bottom line is: do not fall for their bull!!!! They are ripping the entire country(ies) off. I wanted to tell all that were calling in to take the printer back immediately but we were being randomly recorded so I couldn’t. Now, I am not affiliated with them because they pulled the contract from Sykes (stateside) and gave it to Sykes in the Philippines or somewhere else. After that they closed down the branch office I was working in and shorted us our pay on hours for cleaning up the facility; thus, here I am to inform the people of America/Canada that they are in fact ripping you all off! Low cost ink is infact cheaper, but it is also becoming of lower quality damaging the printheads. We will talk more about the printheads later… The ink is lower costing but the you will end up paying the same amount (if not more) attempting to get the printer to work via troubleshooting (Printhead Cleaning) etc,…

Now the printheads… If anyone but the Engineer noticed that when a new(refirbished) printhead is sent to you, the part number is exactly the same???!!! Thus the lie that they feed you about a newly designed printhead will solve your problem is just another lie. If you noticed…. you can take the printhead out of an 5300 AIO Printer and put the same printhead in the ESP Series; why? It is the same defective (refirbished) printhead from the old line of printers!!!! Try it! If you know someone that bought a new model of Kodak ESP AIO Printer; take your 5000 series printhead and see if it fits in the ESP Printer…..guess what….it will! Now, the printhead is also covered under the warranty;….however the warranty will only last for one calendar year. When the year is up you will have to purchase a printhead to make your printer continue to function “To save you on ink cartridge costs” correct? Guess what the price is on the new printhead…..as of 02/2008 it was listed at arround $80.00! Of course the sales pitch is that it comes with a complimentary (you guessed it) set of ink cartridges!!!! More consumer tips to come!

So far, I not impressed. Bad print head, out of the box. Kodak sent a new one. Three months later, print head has gone bad again. This time as my high school chidren can’t print out their final projects. Kodak is promising a new printer if the print head doesn’t fix the problem. As for ink; yes it’s cheap but I seem to be using it a lot quicker than my HP ink. The printer also sounds like it wants to self destruct as it moves paper and the ink head. Not impressed. However, I changed from HP due to high ink cost and lousy quality on the printers.

Problem printing with networked Kodak ESP3 on vista 64 solution here:

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t1583059-wireless_laptop_cannot_connect_network

  • Not Today….

I have bought numerous computers, printers, software and scanners for 19 years now. Hewlett Packard, Packard Bell, Logitech, Canon, e-machine etc… My first experience with a ESP-3 was alright for about 10 months. And then the problems started with the printhead (Kodak sent me another)which through diagnostic testing on line (with Kodak support) turns out to be the printer itself. They wanted to send me a “refurbished” one with the agreement I furnish them with my credit card info. This was done on May 6th. I call up now on May 31st to find out they didn’t send it yet. I’ve not yet experienced this type of confusion in customer service with any company of this size and prestige. This printer with it’s problems and ink usage is actually not worth the “hassle” for the few dollars you think you are saving. The HP and Canon products are much more reliable.

  • John

I bought an ESP3 in Oct of 2008 at Walmart and had to go through 3 printers before I got one to work properly. The software wouldn’t download completely and that should have been my warning to steer clear.

After 2 months the printer would only print one page at a time and have to be shut down. I called Kodak Support and spent an hour trying to get the bugs worked out and they came to the conclusion the printer was defective and sent me a refurbished one.

During the hour long session I also had to remove microsoft framework .net 3.0 and 3.5 and go back to microsoft and get 2.0 re-installed on my computer as a repair for the printer. There was an incompatibility between Kodak software and MS upgrades for framework .net.

I got the replacement printer working and in Apr 2009, the same thing happened again. Kodak support said that I would have to remove .net 3.0 and 3.5 again. I had already removed the Kodak printer and bought a canon printer which is working great so far.

I called Tech Support and wanted a refund on the Kodak printer and they said I would just have to use it, because they wouldn’t give a refund on the unit as it was out of the warranty window.

I told them that it isn’t my fault that Kodak software isn’t compatible with MS software and that MS sends out patches and upgrades to combat viruses and exploitation of their systems to keep my computer safer, just as Kodak sends out upgrades of their systems to make them run better. They told me they were sorry and that they could do nothing for me.

I sent a letter to Kodak Corporate in April 2009 seeking a refund and have not heard from them as of yet. Kodak doesn’t seem to care about the customer and their product doesn’t work well with other software that is necessary for computer safety.

I will not purchase another Kodak printer. The product is defective and they will not stand behind it.

  • Carol

I owned two Kodak 5300 and I am VERY diqusted with both. I have now replaced 8 print heads. The picture quality even with the new print heads are bad. I am out now to purchase another brand as my print heads both blew at once today and on the phone for over an hour so good bye KODAk and I am from Rochester NY where Kodak is famous. A bunch of junk is being made here. Save money.. I hardly think so. I waste paper like mad trying to get a good image.

Thanks for all of the comments. It is appreciated. I believe I’ll stick with HP products.

  • Edward S. Howes

I bought an ESP 3 in March. It was entirely satisfactory- for just 3 months. Then it quit printing.I have spent hours on line with at least 4 different “Kodak ” techs & am now awaiting delivery of my 2nd. replacement printer & 3rd. replacement printer head.

All so far have been non-functional & all have exhibited the same symptoms.

I have lost all faith.Kodak refuses a cash refund, despite the one year warranty.Tech help says they will keep replacing until one works! But for how long? The techs are not Kodak employees, they work for a foreign co. under contract with Kodak. That co. has a vested interest in avoiding cash refunds,That would show they can’t do the job, resulting, ultimately, in loss of the contract.Or,they may not have authorization to refund.Nor will they connect you with someone who does.

Does anyone know how to contact someone at Kodak corporate level, perhaps in a dept. called something like Customer Relations? I have been unsuccessful. That’s the only way to get a refund.

The real problem is the printer design is flawed & unreliable & the quality control stinks.

  • Joani

I just bought and tried to install a Kodak ESP 3 pribter, can’t get past the startup disc, and won’t connect to the website for a driver. And my system had=s just been completely upgraded, so no problems there.Problem is, I’m a designer on a deadline, and my last printer just died, so I’ll have to take this back I guess, and spend a little more money on something that will at least install!

  • Larry D. Abernathy

I purchased an ESP5 All-In-One…which I hadn’t. I’ve had it since Sept 07, worked fine at first, ink was cheap enough…if you can find it. Here in Florida, only get it on line from Kodak.

About 2 months ago, I have problems printing, prints a document, discharges it and hangs up on print progress 97% and won’t let me cancel the printing.

Have deleted the printer and downloaded the software from Kodak’s web site. Also tried downloading the firm ware, said it could not find a Kodak Printer on my computer.

I too have experienced the overseas tech support…they suck!!!

I will be replacing this printer soon.

  • Howie47

So many printers don’t support XP 64bit. I bought a HP all in one
1410v because it had a sticker on the side that said it supported XP 64 bit. Only to find no such driver on the disk and only a beta on the HP site. Now HP has removed that driver, and say my printer never supported XP 64bit. I checked another newer HP printer that said it supported XP 64bit. But on the download site, all it offers is a (work around). So HP offers terrible driver support, just like it seems Kodak does. I’ll never buy HP again. They all rip u off for ink. Which is very cheap. Printers could easily have refillable reservoirs. Still looking for the right all in one printer.

  • Cecil63

I have a HP all-in-one printer. Cost of printer $179. Cost of black and color ink $88. Ink replacement about once a month.
I have a Kodak esp-3 printer. Cost of printer $89. Cost of black and color ink $24.
Have not replaced ink yet, about 4 months now.
The Kodak prints text and pictures as well if not better than the HP.
If the Kodak goes bad, so what. For what I’m saving in ink cost, I’ll buy another Kodak. You do the math.

  • Dorothy Pearce

I bought a Kodal All-In-One Injet printer and in less than one year , Kodak replaced two printheads, free but after the first year was over and less than two years old the printer needs to be replaced according to Kodak, I think they should have sent me a new printer free of charge with all the problems I”ve had, I find it hard to recommend a Kodak product since mine didn’t last two years and I really only used it to make pictures and occasionally I had to print . Yes the cost of ink is cheaper than all the others and it uses less which is a good thing. I’m retired and really can’t afford to purchase a new printer every two years and if the quality was good I shouldn’t have too.

  • Doug

I purchased the Kodak ESP 3 two days ago. I had a real problem iinstalling the software with Vista 64 bit. I had to go to Kodak web site downloaded the same version of software, then it did install. Now it will not Print, keeps telling me to press copy to align paper. This printer is just giving me too much headache. So I am going to get me a Canon Pixma MX 700 Office. Staples has it on sale $99.98.
Kodak needs to get back to Cameras, leave Printers.

  • Michael Gard

I got a Kodak ESP 3 for Christmas; I’m 73 years old & have been using PCs since the CPM days, but I’m not too sharp in the brain anymore. This thing sure uses up a whole bunch more ink than my old HP; thank goodness its cheap – I just wish I could do home-office Refills like I did before I got this gadget. Right now my biggest problem is I can’t figure out how to scan stuff into MS WORD. I dread calling Kodak since I don’t hear well enough to understand the Rag-Heads on the other end of the line. Anyone out there know how its done ???

  • http://dennysden.tripod.com Denny Bissell

It’s great on ink if you print a lot of documents, saves lots of money and trips to the store. Ink is not as cheap as they say, unless I order it online in packs of 5 or more.
Issues connecting it to home or office networks but can be overcome, however a call to Kodak support will get you the response that they don’t support networking. I bought it mostly for the networking ability that used to be standard with ink jets.
The photo color and quality sucks compared to the Cannon, Lexmark and HP I have owned.
It’s sad what the manufactures have done to the cost of home printing. And it should be a crime, but our lawmakers are more concerned on how to raise our taxes than regulate fair trade.

  • http://Bibleinformation.googlepages.com Rob Johnson

I owned a Kodak printer for 14 hours and that was 14 hours too long. Took it back for full refund. It would only print in pink and black. The paper pick up was faulty. With only 6 prints the ink volune indicated a drop of around 20%. With the colour head if one colour runs our the machine will not word. If you black cartridge runs out it disables the machine unlike my HP which will still do scans with both cartriges empty. I think if you set out to design a bad printer it would not be as bad as a Kodak.

  • Steve Jenkins

First, let me say that I have always been a fan and consumer of Kodak products, and as such I was more than ready to buy a Kodak printer when they first came out. I purchased a 5100 and was very pleased with the purchase and photo quality prints that it produced. That was for the first 3 months. After the ink dried and clogged in the nozzles I called Kodak support and after several attempts at cleaning using the maintenance software, as per their support, it was determined that the head was beyond repair. They immediately sent me a new head and ink cartridges. After installing everything the prints were once again of exceptional quality… for about 4 months. The first thing to go was the photo quality. I just stopped printing pics and used it for documents. After another 3 months the documents began to suffer. Again, calling Kodak support we went through the same set of tests, and again found that the head was the problem. I was again given another head, but told that my printer was “just old and needed to be replaced” I have gone on forums to see if there is a way to prevent this and have found that this is a very common problem with the Kodak printer. There is no way to manually clean the print head, and once the ink has dried in the nozzles the maintenance software just doesn’t do a thing to improve the problem. As much as I enjoyed the low cost of ink, it just isn’t enough for me to buy another Kodak printer until they find a way to correct this problem.

Thanks Steve – I’ll be sticking with HP.

I purchased a second Kodak printer this morning, a ESP-3, at Walmart for the same reasons listed in earlier posts. I had my 5100 series printer connected to my HP with no problems. When I placed the SW disc in to install the SW well……4 hours later still not loaded. My Hp running Vista 32 bit. As suggested earlier, I went to the Kodak web site to get the SW and 30 min later all was well. Funny thing is, I also have an iMac G3 crt ( am new to mac’s, but find I like them much better than a pc) it only took 10 min to install the SW. From the disc. All is working fine. As for the print head problem others are having…. maybe cheaper isn’t always the way to go, when you have a large print demand a Xerox printer would be my first choice.
My wish is that these large US corporations bring their call centers and tech support back to the USA. We need the jobs here and it would most certainly make customer service a much more pleasant experience for us all. LOL Collections, haha, from overseas call centers…..yea they could send those jobs over there. Just a thought.

I have had four kodak ESP7 printers fail in six months.
with no luck from kodak on reason or help fixing problem.
so back to my old HP’sand Epsons.
I personaly could not tell a reduction in ink usage although it was a little cheaper to buy.
i did not print many pictures(did not like the ones i did print).
actualy i did not think kodak printer was very good printing anything!

  • katdryden

Thank you all for these comments. I’m in the market for a new printer for my new Dell PC. My 9-year-old HP deskjet still works perfectly (and never a problem with the print head) and I can refill the cartridges, however I need a compatible cable for the new PC and thought I’d just put the money to a new printer. Think I’ll go for another HP printer after reading these comments. Thanks.
    .

  • PolyTek

Sorry to keep flogging this dead horse, but if I can help steer 1 person away from a Kodak printer, it’s worth it.

I’ve had pretty much nothing but problems with my Kodak 5500 AiO. They are sending me my 3rd print head as of today. I used it for almost a year with the original printhead that stopped printing yellow after about 4 months. Second printhead will not recognize new color ink cartriges. We’ll see about the 3rd. I wish I could afford a new printer, and I would recommend not buying ANY Kodak printer.

  • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

Thanks for all of the comments everyone.

PolyTek – no problem. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

    TO ALL:
I was thinking of buying a Kodak printer but after reading the comments quickly changed my mind.

I purchased kodak esp3 at walmart.Have had for about 6 months.Already replaced ink cartridges three times. And have not printed out alot of pictures or documents.Quality of pictures is terrible. They come out red.Even on documents it’s not right. It pulls in more than 1 sheet of paper to print.Wireless doesnt work right, says it wasn’t instaleld correctly.Have reinstalled, same story.I am going to put my old hp back up.At least my pictures were right, just used alot of ink.But not as much as this one, just trying to get it to work.Commercial for Kodak is crap, one big lie.HP or any of them for that matter is better than Kodak. Will never own another one.Very dissatisfied with product.

  • Paul Russell

    Purchased the 5100.

Best printed picture I have ever seen. Own or have owned HP, Canon, etc. This printer produced the best picture I have ever seen.

But with in a few weeks, printer head failure. Kodak sent a free replacement, lasted a few weeks and failed.

Didn’t use the printer for a couple of weeks, now the prints are washed out, faded. Maint. did not help.

To keep it short, 4 print head failures in a year just won’t work. The time spent on maint., tech support, etc is not worth the savings in ink. It is so very sad, the printer when working produces a very good print.

Why build a printer to fail? Makes no sense. Sorry Kodak, you lost my business.

  • Terry Long

I saw all the commercials and had to try it.
    Got the ESP-7

    Quality of print = poor
    Noise = VERY loud!
    Gear jams when power fails.
    Goes thru some ink!
You have to clean print heads almost every day.
NEVER again would I buy a Kodak printer…

  • Raymond James

This review is dated 9/15/09. I purchased an ESP – 9 last Jun 10. I have used this machine extensively to print photos and documents. I am a general contractor and a semipro photographer. The document print quality is excellent and the photo print quality is excellent. I purchased this product to replace my HP fax machine and my HP printer that clamed to have Kodak technology built in interesting. Both old HP devices have provided very reliable service my only problem was with the decay of photo print quality and the tremendous cost of ink about $70.00 to replace the black and color tanks. With the amount of printing I do I would have to replace both tanks about every 45 days that equal about $567.00 dollars annual cost. I have used my ESP – 9 printer for approximately 97 Days my cost of ink replacement has been $50.00 with my old Hp the cost of ink would have cost approximately $150.00 to date. So in about 194 more days this new printer would have paid for it self just in the savings of ink alone. I have had only one paper jam so far also it is true that on printed documents the red colored lettering is not as vibrant as my old Hp printer but the overall quality of the print quality more than makes up for this I have no complaints and I would highly recommend this printer to my friends and colleges.

  • Shelley

I wish I would have read these reviews before buying this stupid printer. I keep getting all kinds of problems with it. I do have a waranty but I wonder if they will honor it?

  • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

    Hello Shelley,
I believe they will honor the warranty. But if you read some of the responses, Kodak printer technical support may be spotty at best. All the best.

  • dc

We bought our Kodak 5300 AOI in June 2008. We do not print heavily, but I enjoy printing pictures when I want to and we use the copy feature often. In a little over a year, I’ve had to replace the print head 2 times. It seems like every time I want to print pictures, there’s something wrong with the print head. We were sold on the price of the ink also, but it seems to use a lot of ink. And just yesterday, I called tech support again about my printing problems and they told me I need yet another print head and a new printer. And to TOP this off, they say my printer is no longer under warranty. So I’m SOL. They will sell me a new Kodak printer at 30% off! WHY WOULD I WANT ANOTHER KODAK after my issues and after reading about all of these???

  • Colin

I have been using the Canon printers for years with the OEM cartridges. The new Canon printer doesn’t work with the OEM cartridges any more and the Canon cartridges cost a lot. The HP, Canon, Epson cartridges are all very expensive.

I bought the ESP3 from Walmart t three months. The ink cartridges cost a lot less than all others, $25 for two. I have been very happy with this printer so far.

  • Jim

I have owned both the Kodak 5300 and the ESP 9 over the last three years. I have not had any print head problems or any issues a firmware update or printer driver did not fix. I see that Best Buy has a promotion this week if you turn-in your old printer you get $50.00 off a new printer. I told my brother about the new ESP 5250 printer, it has wireless now for a lower cost.

With the sale at Best Buy and the $50.00 printer trade-in it bring the wireless printer down to $84.88, so with the cheap ink, it will be payed for in 9 months of operation.

I love my Kodak printers, my dad is still using the old white kodak that I gave him when i got my ESP 9, and it is still humming along without any problems.

  • patty a

I have a kodak esp3 printer and regardless of the computer i hook it up to, it is not recognized. i do not even think i’ve had it for a year. been looking to see if i am still under warranty. i want my money back!!

  • impaler

Thanks everyone, I will not be able sleep tonight after reading these stories. Have had ESP 3 for two months. I keep power on to avoid hearing the Kodak calliope. Sounds like its going to self destruct. Out of curiosity I emailed Kodak last week and asked how much and where I could buy a new print head just in case I ever needed one. They said “printer heads are not for sale, this hardware component is given free of cost for our customers printers.” Hope I do not need one!

  • Lane

The ink is cheap, THE QUALITY SUCKS!!
I bought an ESP-9 because my HP printer’s scanner quit working in Vista after SP1. The Kodak’s scanner works well but everything else is CRAP. Poor print quality and will not even print a web page. Vista SUCKS too.

  • Ed

I bought a Kodak ESP9; right off the bat there is no manual. I put it together, and tried to print out a picture. I had to check its quality, since ink is so cheap. I couldn’t print it and got an error 1000. Okay I called tech support, and honest to God I spoke with two regular tech’s and finally wound up with one of the Supervisors. Only one of the three I could understand well enough. I was told to download a newer software off their site and did all that was required, and tried to print a picture, and it still gave me the same error. We did the ole unplug everything and kick it back on. We rebooted I don’t know how many times? Even the Supervisor came in and took over my computer trying to fix the problem. Some six plus (6+) hours later he signs off telling me he is going to give the files he copied to the Engineer. That was on Friday 10/01 because it was the weekend I had to wait for Monday to come around, and I receive an E-mail asking if I would be available on Monday the 5th and I responded that they could. Here it is Tuesday the 6th and haven’t heard from anyone yet. Over the weekend I discovered that I got some other errors. Such as “Printer doesn’t recognize ink cartridges” Papers edge not found, wouldn’t accept card stock, nor could I print business cards. It took numerous tries’ and on pure white card stock before would it accept to print business cards. I can’t figure out how to lighten the light or darkness of a document being copied or scanned. If it is printed front & back. The light on the scanner is such that it will bleed through and I get a revered copy of what is on the side that is not being copied, and it prints crooked and really slow. I haven’t had near the problems that I have read other people having with tech support, but I am only a newbie to this. NOPE if you ask me DON’T ANYONE BUY A KODAK ESP9~~ Dirty Words~~ NUFF SAID!

  • Gail

They’re crap! I bought one less than a month ago, and it’s total crap. Poor color quality on plain paper, better on photo paper, but still CRAP. Not enough options or settings to adjust things. Used up the ink in three weeks as opposed to 3 to 4 months with my HP printer I have had for YEARS with no problems. I’ll learn to stay away from anything that is NOT HP. Don’t buy Kodak printers at all.

  • Alpena Bob

I have had a Kodak 5500 All-in-one for two years now. I have a replacement machine because the first one went through 4 printheads with no end is sight. Kodak replaced it with no hassle.

My replacement machine just went through it’s first printhead replacement. Kodak Overnighted a replacement to me.

I don’t think it uses any more ink than HP. In fact, I had two HP’s before this and I got sick and tired of paying $50 to replace the ink cartridges. Having 3 different HP printers and all 3 taking “different” cartridges, to me, was an example of corporate greed.

My replacement Kodak printer gives me good image quality and seems to work well. Although, scanning is a bit dicey and can be a real pain in the you-know-what.

Kodak support is OK as long as the person speaks English. And, not all do (or do it well enough to understand).

However, if I have to go though another printhead replacement, I will most likely look for another brand of printer.

  • Pam

This printer makes me miss my HP 1210v — too bad HP doesn’t make it anymore, i hate the 1410v, which is why I got a kodak a couple of weeks ago. but I’m really unhappy with it. I called customer service due to issues of print quality (the reds are always messed up, except when printing photos), all of the colors seem kind of washed out, but especially the red. when printing color documents, even the black seems more like grey.

If I could find my receipt from Walmart, i’d send it back to the company. looks like i’ll probably sell it on craigslist or something.
I’m a college student and liked the idea of cheaper ink for when i have projects to print, but I would feel horrible turning in anything with this horrible quality of prints. The HP ink was pretty expensive and my 1410 seemed to use it up in a month, but so far i haven’t been able to use anything i’ve printed with the kodak except for black and white documents. what a waste.

I called customer service about it, which is of course NOT based in america, so the guy could barely understand me, and they blamed the quality issue on my printer being low on ink. so, like a dork, i replaced the cartridges and — wouldn’t you know it, SAME CRAPPY COLORS!

i was really prepared to love this printer, because i loved my kodak easy share camera that finally gave out after 4 years of constant use, travelling, dropping, etc. it only gave out because i unknowingly smashed it in a bag while camping. i thought the printer would be on par with the quality of the cameras, but it doesn’t seem to be so. really unhappy.

when i came here and read the reviews, i saw other posts with the same complaints as me — bad reds, weird issues with it, print head issues (i already replaced the print head once and i’ve had this thing for 2, maybe 3 weeks!) so atleast i know it’s not JUST ME. it’s not just how im doing things, it’s not JUST my printer, it seems to be a big problem, and hopefully kodak will fix it in the future.

  • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

    Hi Pam,
If you paid by credit card I would see if Walmart can track down the purchase so you can take the printer back.

  • KodakAprille

Pam -what type of paper are you printing on when you get the poor color quality? It makes a difference. Have you tried Kodak paper or anything with the Color-Lok logo?

  • Manuel Vela

The ink is cheap, but you have to buy it often, and even if you rarely print in color, you have to install color cartridges often as well. That’s because it uses color at every start up. When the color ink runs low, it simply shuts down and does not let you print. Even if you are only printing black text. Looking elsewhere now.

  • Wendy Lynn

I bought my printer back in Feb. The printing quality is good, Their advertisement is that the cartliages are cheap and that is true, but there isn not much in in them and they run out fast. I use my printer for my college assignemnts and use mainly black ink, it still uses the colored ink even when it is not to supposed to be used. I’m going to pull my HP back out, I’m glad I kept it.

  • Cindy

I hate my Kodak ESP3 printer. Nothing but trouble. I can’t even figure out how to scan on it. The directions are horrible, and I can’t find anyone at the call center who I can even understand.

  • RG

I have a Kodak ESP 5, it’s junk, what can I say. Nothing but trouble with it. The printhead was bad right out of the box. It uses ink more than any printer I ever seen. It doesn’t print in black & white at all right now, even after cleaning the printhead.
Please don’t buy this printer. Read the reviews & believe. Don’t b like me & buy this piece of junk. I’m out of over a 100 bucks!

  • MJ

I bought an ESP 7 at the beginning of the year!! I hate this printer, it has been nothing but trouble from day one!! Just had a replacement sent to me and now it is not working, Kodak had done a very poor job with their ESP printers. Ink may be inexpensive, but I would rather pay for the ink and a great printer and not have the headaches I have had with this printer. Can anyone give me tell me a good printer to get. I want to be able to print out my pictures 1st time around and not want to throw the printer out the window when I hit print and a blank photo comes out.

  • Memo

I bought and ESP 3, guys that is a piece of crap. It is noisy, slow and the worst thing is that the paper jams and it is very difficult to take it out. The color is not good at all, do yourself a favor and buy something else. Believe me, I am gonna throw it away.

  • Sam

I’ved owned a Kodak ESP7 for just under a year, with no issues. I print extensively without any difficulty. I have compared my prints to higher end laser printers( hp. etc) to which my printer seems to surpass in color. The only disappointment I have thusfar is the inability to make larger size prints.

  • Pedantic Vindictiveman

Easyshare 5500, should be called Easyshite5500, Peice of crap, takes ages to do anything, noisy noisy noisy, printing is absolutaley shit in black and white, colour is a joke, prints half a photo then goes all liney, tried new cartridges and deep clean whatever, still shit, gonna throw it away and go back to HP

  • Pedantic Vindictiveman

Oh yea forgot to mention the paper jams and total inability to pickup a bloody envelope.

  • Paulette

I have owned the Kodak ESP-3 AiO for one year now and have been extremely disappointed in the reliability. I guess I was expecting it to last longer than one year. I am going to get a new printer and pay MORE money just for a better quality product. I have never printed photos that were clear. They appear grainy and the color quality is terrible. Colors are never true. I cannot get a good color photo now at all. I would NEVER recommend this printer to anyone. I think they compare to the Lexmark brand. I will go back to Cannon or the HP anyday! The ink might cost less but you do NOT get very much print life from them at all. Very disappointed in this printer.

  • Richard W. Gerber

I have experienced most of the problems dealing with connectivity of the Kodak ESP-3 in the last two weeks.
I have owned the printer for 7 months.

You ask “What Do You Think?”…….I think it is time for a class action lawsuit.
    RWG

  • Gordon Hathaway

I have the 5300. Can’t recommend this Kodak printer. The Internet is littered with complaints about Kodak printers. Mine can’t print large areas of solid color without banding. The print head clogs easily and either has to be replaced or soaked in rubbing alcohol frequently. Yes, the ink is moderately priced, but this thing goes through ink like a bandit. Save your money and buy something else. Kodak should be ashamed, but I assume that they are fighting for their lives since film died.

  • Van Ligon

Well, I sure am glad I read this.

I just finished fixing up an older Mac G4 tower for my 80 YO Mother In law. new GD and memory. Still a good machine.

Her PC computer has been dead for a while so I am betting her canon printer has ink kicked in the heads as well.

I was thinking a Kodak. Oh Heck No…. Not after reading this……… She is 6 hours from me. No way am I getting into that!

HP for her. At least that way the head comes with the cartridge.

  • Mal

Bought the Kodak all in one last year after the big TV blitz. Not too bad for awhile despite various problems installing the software and maintaining contact with it on the wireless network in the house. That didn’t last long. Ink and paper consumption is extremely high due to using ink primarily to clean the print heads and paper to ascertain that the head cleaning was unsuccessful but only after a 14 page job that in which 12 pages were unsuccessful. The only thing that saves the consumables is the fact that if we have to print anything important; we use a different printer.

  • Mike

Kodak all-in-one printers are the worst. DO NOT BUY ONE. I have had three so far (the original having been replaced twice after hours on the phone with India and having to send the bad printer back or get charged). The problem the same each time (wont work without paper in upper tray, put paper in upper tray and letter size prints out on 5 by 7). They now want to send me a fouth replacement. UNBELIEVABLE.

  • Josh

My Brother printer broke after 6 years of no problems. I got a Kodak AiO 5100 printer for my birthday. It worked for a week and then the printhead started jamming. 6 printheads later, I buy another printer and test my hammer-eye coordination. Kodak should have stuck to their camera’s. A dot matrix prints better quality than this piece of useless s&%t. It’s only upside is it makes a good paperweight. If it doesn’t do that, maybe Kodak support will send you a printhead full of ink to weight it down after learning to speak english!

  • Ed

I’m a professor, and I do tons of printing. In the last four months, I spent over $250 on ink. I’m keeping the HP as backup, and buying a Kodak for everyday jobs. Hopefully, Kodak will work out the bugs. HP has them too, but it’s a reliable printer in general.

  • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

    Hello Ed,
First of all let us know how the Kodak works for you.

Second if you do a large amount of printing have you given any thought to a Laser printer?

  • John

I got ESP 3 because they advertize how cheap the ink is, but it goes through ink 5 times as fast and the print head went out of it already, they sent me a new one, so must be common. and I do very little pinting. So never buy a Kodak printer!!

Please let us know if Kodak Mans up and recalls them all, peices of junk!!

  • sh

piece of junk, one month after buying it, i had problems with the software whick caused the AIO to open with every program you tried to open and use on the computer had to call support , was a problem with software and had to uninstall and re-install software.

second month of ownership, printer stopped printing and i kept getting a flashing red light on ink so i replaced with brand new ink and still flashed red and would not print, so again i called support, after an hour of talking to someone who could not speak good english and has to prove i purchased this printer all over again by emailing a copy once again to show proof of purchase only then did they tell me the print head sounds like it is out anf they sent a new ptint head and i changed it anf still it would not print and still flashes the red error light for ink, so i called back support and tolf them the printer still wont work and the red light still flashes, i was told a new printer would bew sent out overnight and receive it on this date, it never came. so once again i called support and they told me the replacement was never processed and the person on the phone said he must processed it and it would be an overnight delievery, well still no printer the next day or the next.

i called support and asked where my printer was and they said there is technical problems and i would not get it untill this date

would i recommend a kodak NO i would not, the ink is expensive because it does not last as long as my HP so i have to buy kodak ink more times then I do for my HP so dont let the low ink cost fool you its not true and i told kodak that when they sent me a survey about the printer anf i told them it was junk

2 months and the printer does not even work that is bad

  • Junior

Just bought a kodak esp3 printer, already had to replace the printer head as it would not print photos any where close to an acceptable quality level. The ink for this printer is cheaper but it uses ink much faster than the lexmark aio that I was previously using. I will try the new printhead to see if it lasts any longer than the last one, if not it goes into the trash and I go back to H.P. or Lexmark. Would not recommend this product to anyone.

  • Lisa Jones

As with most females I would like to be new and different, but all I can say is ” see above.” My husband is debating on using the old reliable “hammer technique” to fix this problem. Is there any place in the good old USA where we can walk in and return these?

  • http://paintingballerina.com GBD

We purchased the ESP7 Kodal All In One Printer a few months ago. Although the ink is cheap, I’m not sure yet as I had to replace my black and color cartridges quickly (less than 200 pages). Also, the printer is slow queing up. Recently I was unable to export my Quark files to PDF due to no PostScript Printer option. When I contacted Kodak support, followed their instructions, the problem became worse. Now for over 1 day i am without a printer connection. My computer indicates I am not connected to printer, I am unable to locate my original install disk and when I went online, when I downloaded the Firmware for Kodal AIO printers, nothing happense. It goes through the motion of downloading and running but only the icon is on the desktop no app. So I’m awfully discouraged with this printer and wondering if they are misrepresenting their product.

  • Mike

Bought a Kodak AiO3 or whatever the exact model was and it uses ink like mad ! Printed 24 4×6 photos and the color cart was empty ! (thats a buck a piece friends)
You also have to use High quality paper in order to get a decent readable / viewable print — SO – buy Kodak paper and is anything better — NO. same crappy print from this printer.
I am not a fan now after being convinced by an infomercial almost a year ago. – yes the ink is cheap – but like cheap booze you must suffer the same consequences afterward.
And as for being “waterproof” I think if you hold my printed photos underwater – they may look better !

  • michelle

I own one the ESP3 biggest piece of crap ever, I would like to take it out in the yard and use it for target practice but until I find a replacement we need it my hubby has to scan and print for work daily and this was obviously not meant for daily use the scan button on the top has never worked we have to use the software which take a day and ahlf to load even after I got a new PC, it wont print on photo paper correctly even KODAK brand paper I have been on the phone and chat service with them for months now trying to fix the problem the keep telling me its my ink cartridge that is brand new BTW and reading at 30% ink left WTF does KODAK have some lab rats over there doing QC its rediculous that they are selling this crap I am waiting for them to be recalled due to shock hazard as well being as mine has shocked me about 1500 times now and I refuse to even leave it plugged in anymore when its not in use. I feel like a fool for spending twice what a reg. printer would have cost for this piece of junk.

  • Elizabeth Register

I bought a Kodak three in one and it was a piece of junk!!!! Sure the cartriges were less, but they ran out faster. I was later told by a tech that, that was a common problem.

The printer jammed all the time and the prints were awful! The color was never right. I finally got mad and threw the whole thing away.

I will never buy from Kodak again!

  • Dean

I am on my 4th printhead on my 5300AIO. When it prints, it’s beautiful. The problem I have is fouling of the jets due to low usage. Kodak is going to send me yet another printhead. They should have a better maintenance for the head, a small exe that would clean them every week, or something of that nature. Not everyone prints every single day, Kodak did not take this into account in their design. This POS will likely be going to the range and become the victim of my AR or M1 Garand, at least I can have some fun throwing this thing away.

  • Jenifex51

ONE of my biggest complaints is FINDING THE INK!! everyone has HP…maybe Epson, BUT NOT KODAK… so it looks like ebay will get my business instead of local …. or any stores nearby… I need ink like yesterday.. whats UP???

  • David

Just bought a esp 5250…found out where India is..how can you trust anybody that doesn’t know what Christmas is…hmmm….so to date..it is noisy..the kodak software and their printer driver wont work together on my wireless note book..( will work on my hard wired desktop) says the printer processor is missing during install and aborts but the printer is in the controll panel/printer area and it can be used for other programs….India says…huh ??? phone H/P :)

  • David

so I just got off the phone with Staples..this printer is going back on Saturday…the thought of keeping it to see what goes on down the line is tooooo much and I do not have any relatives in India…H/P or maybe Epson is it for me…Have a Happy New Year…are they into that in India…hmmm :)

  • Terrel

I am so glad I found your web site. I was getting ready to purchase a Kodak printer, but now I will stick with HP. One of the main reason I would not purchase one now, is the location of their tech support group. I would like to see, as a requirement, all companies that sell products to publish the location of their tech support and let that help influence people to purchase their product or not.

  • Richard

I have a Kodak 5500 All In One, Printer/Copier/Fax.Uses alot of ink for the little printing I do. When Ink is low, light flashes and you are done. You can not fax when low on Ink. ? Can’t turn off unit unless you unplug it.Have been through seven replacement cartridges since I owned. Only buy kodak brand as suggested. Bought with Kodak camera also. Lens popped out and they would not repair under warranty. Called 800# and could not understand his broken English. Will Hook up my old dependable HP. Kodak out the door to trash. Would not even give to my enemies. Thanks

  • Julio

Have been looking for a replacement for my Lexmak Printer because of the ink cost. Was ready to buy the Kodak ESP5 until I read the comments about malfunctions and the foreign support. shall keep my Lexmark ( I am very happy with the quality).

  • Steve

I have had a Kodak for about a year and half. I needed to replace my HP all in one that served well, but ink and then print heads that went bad pushed maintenance costs beyond replacement costs, so off to the land fill it went…

The Kodak print head went bad pretty early on, but Kodak replaced it at no charge, and the replacement has worked perfectly since then. I have two friends that have bought newer models on my recommendation, warning both to keep an eye on the print head (one HAS gone bad so far, free replacement!).

I have sold at least two printers for Kodak while standing in the printer aisle in Walmart when people came in shopping for printers. I always get a kick out of the Kodak ink taking up 10 inches of shelf space compared to the 16 FEET of competitors different models. I LOVE not needing to look up on a chart or book to find which cartridge I need. 1 color and 1 black, for every Kodak printer – BRILLIANT!

I will continue to recommend the printers to friends and strangers alike. I only wish I got a commission out of this…

    Kodak ESP7 – Kodak Nightmare

I run a computer service business (20yrs) and I was given this printer by a customer that had many problems including having the printhead replaced twice and having Kodak send her a new printhead and having Kodak send her a new (probably refurbished) print she was going to throw it away.

I took it because it had features I wanted, wireless, scanner, beautiful infomercial ;-) , and I thought it would save me on ink – that’s what the infomercial said anyway.

I installed it – 40 minutes because everything had to update from the web – this was my first clue that Kodak has no clue about consumer printers. The wireless setup went pretty smooth.

I printed some Christmas photos and wow did they look like cr@p. We looked pale and almost like zombies. I then printed the photos on an Epson 740 first sold for Windows 1998 – over 10 years ago. The photos looked great – on the 10+ year old printer!

I checked online for help from Kodak and was sent a new printhead. I re-printed the photos – 3 4×6″ photos and still we looked terible. I then printed 10 pages or so for my kids homework – mostly text with some color. I also printed ~15 to 20 pages of Word documents. All with black ink.

This morning I scanned in 2 documents to email and after scanning my black ink is now empty. That’s less that 30 pages of total printing mostly text! I power cycled, removed and re-installed the cartridge but still the black cartridge is useless. I should say the entire printer is now useless. I cannot scan or print in color or anything. It’s a boat anchor for a sinking ship.

Kodak is sending me another new printhead (3rd one) – I have no hope and will probably not ever use this POS again.

I am very disapointed with Kodak and cannot believe how lousy this printer is. Many hardware faults, uses A LOT of ink and turns into a brick if 1 cartidge is empty. I’ve been reading on the web and if Kodak had any common sense Kodak should refund everyone’s money and get out of inkjet printer business.

    Hu said that

    Hi Rich,
    Thanks for the information.

Hu – Thanks to you as well for sharing your experience.

From all of the comments, it seems that the majority of people are disappointed with the Kodak printers.

  • Patricia

I am using the Kodak All-in-one printer 5 and when it works the printing is great. The problem is it has problems with the print head or at least mine does. I have gone through 2 print heads in less than 12 months of using my printer. Plus it gets paper jams very easily. I guess I would not buy another one even though the ink refills are cheaper. What good are they when you can’t get the printer to print – they just dry up.

  • mary

How do you get the Kodak esp3 to scan? For a long time it would only print one page at a time. After I figured out to check the collate box, it now prints however many I want. The directions are crappy, and I refuse to call India. If you are not familiar with all the computer terminology, trying to understand somebody from India talk computer is impossible.

  • Dennis Drdek

I bought a esp 3 aio printer this thing is a piece of crap, i printed 2 pages and it stopped i followed all of kodaks trouble shooting and it still would not work, i contacted kodak, they told me the print head was bad, after printing 2 pages, installed new print head and new ink carttrages, printed 4 pages quit again same crap needs a new print head, i threw the damn thing out in the rubbish, will buy HP fron know on. it was just a waste of $90.00 A PIECE OF CRAP.

  • Sara

THE ESP 3 IS the worst printer I have ever owned. Kodak even sent me a replacement after 4 months of arguing with them, and the replacement is just as bad. Right now it is making all of these terrible sounds. It tries to suck up 20 pages at once, and then the pages get jammed. Right now it is only printing in color ink. I have replaced the printer head and the entire printer. Do not buy this piece of junk.

  • Debbie

I have the Kodak EasyShare 5300, I have replaced the printhead twice but kodak replaces them free of charge. other than that have had no problems . Great service with kodak answers questions immediately best customer service I have ever had. Prints great pictures and documents, does not smear. I have had great performance wtih this printer. Ink lasts a lot longer than my other printers did and costs less too.

  • Connie

I have a Kodak ESP3 all in one printer, this is the worse
printer I have ever had, I would not tell any one to buy
a Kodak printer, most off the time it is broken, the rest of the time it might or might not print, I have wasted so much money on fixing it, buying ink. It is the biggest piece of
crap. I know I will never buy Kodak again, I will go back to
Lexmark and pay a little more for ink, and get my prints.
On a scale of 1 to 10 Kodak printer rank 1.

  • kathy

Have had nothing but troubl with printer it does its own thing the red does not show it comes up green or yellow i have changed cartridges three times and still a problem with red will have to buy new printer but will not be kodak

  • Reed

I purchased an ESP3 for my daughter to use in college. I bought into the cheaper ink hype and in theory the Kodak design should make the ink cheaper because they only use the cartridges to hold the ink. The print head is an independent unit. The problem is that the ESP3 is just a terrible printer. After two weeks it failed and the Kodak support from India is terrible. First I had to replace the print head. That didn’t work so after many more calls to India the were to replace it with a new ESP3. The replacement print was not new it was a refurbished unit and it did not work out of the box. There is no way to speak with anyone in the US. I finally called the President’s office to unload and they are sending me a new ESP5250 because “the ESP3 just don’t work.” I’ll never buy another Kodak product. They should find the guy that decided that they should outsource customer support to India and burn him at a stake. I replaced the ESP3 with a cheep HP 4680 and it works great. Always go with HP. There is a reason that they have the largest market share.

  • Leelogs

It only took me a week or so to realise what a complete confidence trick the whole Kodak “cheap ink” thing was. When you run out of colour ink, you cannot print anything until you replace it – even when your black cartridge is full! So print a couple of photos and you CANNOT run off that important invoice – even though you have everything you need for it. It’s the same vice-versa. I can think of no reason to make a printer behave like this except greed, malice and cynicism.

However, since I upgraded to Win 7 64 this is pretty academic as my “easyshare” (hilarious name, nothing about it has been easy) 5300 AIO just will NOT work on this platform. Even though Kodak chucks out a new patch every other day, it is all rubbish. You can uninstall, start again, let windows load its own drivers, troubleshoot, even talk to Kodak… NOTHING works. It is bad software made by morons. They haven’t updated the downloadable driver since last September.

So happy that all the packets of “cheap” ink I bought are utterly useless! Anyone want them?

  • Rick Beauchesne

My Kodak 5300 sucks. Purchased new in March 2009 it has gone through 3 printheads and is still not working right. The person I spoke to said they could send another printhead but I said don’t bother. I can’t believe Kodak ignoring customer issues i read on lots of complaint sights. Class action time!!

  • http://viviansville.com Vivian Bedoya

My ESP3 is only one-year-old. It did not live up to my expectations at all and I would NEVER recommend it! It’s cheaply constructed, paper jams frequently, it tends to feed more than one piece of paper at a time and the scanner has the worst software management tool ever created. As we speak, I cannot get the black ink to print. Kodak is shipping me a new printhead for the same issues described in this blog. I bought the printer because it offered “economical” ink but I figure I’ve wasted more ink cleaning the printhead than printing documents.

Oh… and I’ve never bothered to print photos with it.

  • brandy

i have kodak esp 5250 and the color quality s poor and it does not work with Avery software. Kodak support sent me 2 new print heads and a new printer, same issue. Now they will not refund my money or allow me to return the printer to them. they just keep sending me new printers. I want my $159 back!

  • judge mike

Real question should be “Who’s Not Using A Kodak Printer”. Printed around 100 sheets in 3 yrs. Cost per sheet over $3.00 and 4 to 5 hrs of TRYING. Bring mine to the firing range and putting It out My Misory!!! Then I’ll buy a brand that WORKS. BAT

  • Kane

    Just posted this elsewhere, too…
    —————————————————————–
I did it. I replaced my very old (albeit reliable) HP printer with the Kodak ESP 7. Low-cost ink…can’t beat it.

5 months later, it won’t print black. Used the Kodak support chat and they claimed it was a faulty(?) ink cartridge. I told them that I had already bought a new one and replaced it. They insisted it was the ink and that within 5 business days that I’d get a new replacement cartridge. cased cloesed. lol.

Went out and bought another black cartridge and tried that, NG. Went back to chat support and they finally admitted that the head seemed faulty. Another one on the way within 7 business days. So many hours spent on cleaning, going to Staples, test prints, chat support, etc. Time = $$. I feel quite stupid now.

HP, this doesn’t mean I enjoy your outrageous prices and I’m gonna stay with Kodak until the new head comes and see what happens.

Kodak, you offshore jobs and piss people off with your poor quality and service. Don’t sit there and scratch your head later and wonder why.

SAVE YOUR MONEY, BE HAPPY TO PAY MORE FOR INK

Kodak printers are very inexpensive to print. for tjhe cost of one black cartridge I could have color and black on hand as a spare. I had a ESP 7.after about 7 months the printer wwent into a super ink conservation mode, now my ink consumption was down to ZERO. because my printer would not print. Since all Kodak promiced me was cheap ink prices, I should have been happy, but being never satisfied, i relized I could get the same no ink consumption if I never bought a Kodak printer.

It even gets better… I paid extra money to get the LAN / WLAN option. I am a Cisco CCNA and have jhooked up hundreds if not thousands of printers. I could not hook up the printer. After some trial and error I found that I could close to working if I first install the USB connection then the LAN connection and finnaly the WLAN connection. Even still I needed to call service and have one of the Kodak engineers spend hours tweaking the connection. Finnaly he got it working. But the WLAN connection kept falling asleep. this can be resolved by rebooting my computer.now that was not convienent to reboot my computer if I wanted to print . So I finnaly gave up the ghost and considered the money I spent on the LAN / WLAN lost , I went back to the USB connection.

Now if the cost of printing is more important to you than printing and if you like spending hours on the phone with Tech support then the Kodak printer is for you

But if you factor in the cost of the printer and ink it cost me 27 cents because the printer is disposable. It died just after I put the third set of cartredges in the piece of crap

  • Glenn

Purchased a Kodak ESP 5250………. I would not recommend this printer to anyone. I am on my third replacement unit from Kodak because of the printer head being jammed or the cartridges refusing to center in order to change the ink cartridges. Support has been good but it wears thin when you cant print for a customer. Warranty is only as good as the product it backs up and when my printer is broken 3 days out of 5 the warranty coverage is meaningless. The print quality is good when it works and the tech guys in India are very friendly to talk to. Ink is cheap but doesnt go as far as my HP did. I dont know if you get the same miles per gallon over all, I havent figured it out but I am going to guess the HP did better as it lasted much longer. Too bad because I am a real Kodak fan and I have always used their products, they need to redesign these printers, their quality is poor overall due to low reliability…………………….too bad.

  • Shirley

I so totally agree with all the negative reviews here. The Kodak esp5 that I have IS a nightmare and it’s driving me insane. I’ve cried less with a lost love than I have with this frustrating piece of crap. We should get a class action lawsuit going on! It’s one problem after another..”printer not connected..wrong size pape (what size paper Do you use for 4×6 pics?) I don’t have alot of money to buy ink every other month, can’t believe how fast it goes. Now I have the printhead issues! Just wanted to make cards to send to 6 grandkids and kids out-of-state. Have not been able to print much of anything since I’ve had it, which is less than 1year! Kodak SUCKS and I will tell EVERYONE I know, even strangers NEVER to buy a KOdak product !!!

  • Don L

Kodak printers – at least the ESP I own – MUST BE AVOIDED!! Do not be sucked in my cheap cartridge price, a black cartridge is inadequate to print a full tax return (prior year, can’t efile) … it’s effectively useless. I plan to take it back to the store and dump on their desk and tell them to keep it. Don;t buy Kodal folks!

  • Louie

Ive had an ESP5 for almost a year and no major problems so far….I did have to replace the printhead once about a month in…..but so far so good…..It does use a bit more ink when printing photos….but so do other printers…..When printing text the ink usage is minimal. Like others though I dont understand why it uses color ink when printing black text. Anyway….so far I am happy with my purchase…..Maybe I got lucky and got a good one….I dont know.

  • M.

Kodak 5300: worst printer ever. broke 3 times now. Twice the printheads went. Now all it does is shoot out blank pieces of paper (2), and then eats the third.

Then, customer service: no one speaks good enough English!! The problem, when it’s solved is 2 hours later, when, if they hired people who knew the language, could have been a half hour tops!

And to make things worse, this printer is a lemon, and my warranty expired just recently soon after the printer is now unfixable.

And–the paper that was destroyed and ruined: $!

the ink cartridges because they weren’t good anymore: $!

You think you’ll save money on a Kodak printer? –Think again!!

  • Mitch

Thanks for the info on the crappy Kodak printers. We have an esp7 that is just over a year old and was barely used. It won’t
print anything at this point. You”re site saved me the price of more ink, cost to try a new printhead and probably the run around with foreign tech support. A brand new printer heading for the dumpster.

    Don’t buy a Kodak!!

  • Carol

I have had this Kodak ESP 3 for about a year. I have nothing good to say it about it because it jams up, I waste paper. Now it tells me, I have no paper in the tray which I do. I can’t find any reason for it to say that. The ink is cheaper, and that’s a plus. But, with all the paper I have wasted, I would have been better off sticking with my HP printer all in one. The quality of print is not what I expected. My HP did a better job! I think Kodak should stick to cameras, and stop making printers.

Does anyone know why this thing is telling me I have no paper?

  • Louie

Carol…..if you contact Kodak from the website (Kodak.com) they may be able to help you through live chat. But if you need to call them Good luck! You will be calling India and they are very hard to understand.

Mitch…..Kodak may send you a new printhead at no charge….Try contacting them through live chat or email before calling. They sent me a new printhead for my ESP 5 at no charge but I kept getting the message “printhead not installed correctly”.

  • o-mac

    One problem after another.
I purchased the Kodak ESP-3 at a local Walmart in December of 2008. By the way I doubt that I printed more than a couple dozen pictures and maybe 4-500 pages of black and white documents. From the get go the printer was noisy and slow. Often (keep in mind that I am a seldom user) it would provide irregular color and black and white resulting in throw aways.
I contacted the support number and they ( India ) walked me through stuff without any improvement. They sent me a printer head, which I inserted and got temporary satisfactory printing. A couple months passed and the problem resurfaced. Bottom line, they sent me a new printer.
Now, after printing 547 pages and replacing both inks, twice the thing does not print. After calling support they decided that the printer head needed to be AGAIN.
After buying 4 complete ink replacements I give up. This is the worst printer, bar none, that I have ever purchased.
By the way, paper jams were an ongoing problem. I agree with others that Kodak should stick with cameras.

  • Cheryl

I purchased mine last April and did not hook it up until Sept. When I did, it gave me an error saying paper jam. No paper in how can it jam. Anyhow, called Kodak, they sent out a refurbished printer. Worked for about 1 month. Ran out of ink and tried to replace black cartridge, when I did it said the black needed replaced. Called again, they sent me a new printhead and replaced my cartridges. Now forward to April and the ink needed replaced again. I hardly print and this thing was going through ink like crazy. Called again and complained, they wanted to see proof that it was less than 1 yr old. Faxed copy of my receipt and lo and behold they sent me a brand new printer, new printhead ( a spare) and black and color cartridges. The product might suck but their customer service is great. I would never purchase another printer from them but would their cameras.

We operate a nonprofit organization at home, along with other personal and other organizational printing, sometimes requiring heavy print jobs, running 2 or 3 printers at one time to expedite. In the last half of 2008, we purchased a Kodak 5300 AiO through their TV infomercial.

I’ll give you the downside first: I’ve had them replace the printhead three times. Each time done quickly and without hesitation after a few simple tests to ascertain it was indeed a printhead problem. Clearly, there was a printhead design defect at the time I purchased originally. My 3rd printhead has been working well for a long time now, and we’re about 1.5 years into using this machine. Since moving to Windows 7, the printer keeps losing connectivity, requiring me to reboot…which does restore connectivity (no other approach works so far, including working with a Kodak tech via Live Chat). But, overall, it works fine once this is reestablished, and it seems to be an unresolved compatibility issue with the OS.

NOTE: I’ve had plenty of problems with plenty of printers. The Kodak people do work with you and aren’t afraid to admit when it’s their problem. I think maybe the printhead problem is resolved now. The problems with theirs certainly aren’t any worse than problems encountered with other printers.

Now the upside of things: The cost for ink for this printer is WAY WAY WAY WAY cheaper, and when you print a lot, and consider spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars each year, just for ink, this is HUGE!!!!! Please do not pass up a Kodak printer just because of some niggly problems. If you do, you will pay for your choice. The other companies need to come up to speed when it comes to not jamming people so heavy for ink. This factor alone makes it well worth giving Kodak a serious try. The photo quality, using the exact same cartridges used for other work (instead of buying separate photo cartridges) does absolutely wonderful work. I’ve handed prints from this printer to people and they just couldn’t believe it was from a printer. Of course, other photo printers can do this to whatever degree…but I would challenge them to do it at this price for ink! If they can’t…well, that’s their problem.

A store rep the other day went on and on about how their store had stopped carrying Kodak, and how it had problems. I just smiled and told him that mine works fine and saves me literally hundreds of dollars a year, just for my one Kodak printer. This one you can take to the bank!

Hi I Have a Kodak ESP 3 which is used only for Black & White printing but the colour cartridge keeps going down. By black and white printing i mean letters produced with MS office and default colours.

I am told by Kodak that not only do I have a BLACK cartridge there is one within the Colour cartridge to ensure that ” I Have The Right Colour Black”????????????

If the Black in the colour cartridge get used up I can’t print black and white just using my black cartridge I have to replace the colour cartridge because the printer won’t due it’s design work unless there are 2 cartridges with a ink in EVERY colour.

I have never had a printer work this way my HP never did I could print in what ever colour I wanted and if one or the other cartridge emptied I could use the other.

Far from saving me money this is in fact costing me money and to be perfectly honest I feel that KODAK have ripped me off and deceived me with their adverts.

Buy one at your own peril but don’t complain after this!

  • Gail G.

For my newly minted home business, I purchased a Kodak ESP 9 back in April of 2009. Couldn’t find that model at a Best Buy or a Walmart or a Staples, so I got it directly from Kodak.

I run a 64-bit Vista operating system, and can’t complain about its performance with the Kodak. I have updated firmware at least once for the Kodak since I’ve had it; major upgrade back in January/February of this year. Took quite a while, but it went through successfully. No complaints with that.

I do use the Kodak to print small jobs every day, mostly black ink printing, and even with the color printing have found the quality of print to be quite good, with a quick-drying ink that lays flat on the paper, and doesn’t make the paper ripple-y, like the other inkjet printers. Nice. I dig that.

The cartridges are definitely cheaper, and I don’t need to wait two or three weeks to buy cartridges (as I used to have to do when I had a first-generation HP laser printer and later, an Epson inkjet). I mean, I literally had to wait to have the money in my pocket, and couldn’t print until then! I planned, upon researching printers for my business, to avoid this problem by getting the Kodak. Every freelancer has lean weeks, and I wanted to plan for them.

I also wanted the scanning, copying, faxing features, just in case such a thing was needed. By now I have used all of these features, although I don’t have to use them often. But they all work just fine!

Now, back to the printing specifics. As i said, the print quality is very good. However, with use, I have noticed the following problems that I was able to work through, and perhaps you will find these remarks helpful:

If, like me, you are a bit of space cadet and foolishly leave something sitting in front of the printer (like, say, a few pieces of mail or other seemingly harmless small obstacle sitting there) and you ditzily try to print anyway, you will find that as the gears are pushing the paper out, the piddling resistance offered by this very small obstacle will cause the printing to go awry ( the paper will become skewed), rather than simply causing the paper to rise up a bit on feedout and roll over the obstacle. This in itself is annoying, but other than compelling one to stop one’s work to try and find a lasting cure for ditziness, what problems can it cause?

Well…once you curse and print again, you will find the print quality will be affected.

Why? Because the printhead will be smeared with the ink that didn’t transfer to the paper. Once I genius’d this through, after unrewarding recalibrations, printhead cleanings, etc., I found that by physically removing and cleaning the messy printhead (carefully), THEN performing the steps of powering up again and recalibrating and clearing the nozzles, etc., I was able to forstall the “gotta replace the ink-clogged printhead” problem. All was seemingly well again. (Until the next time I did the same GD thing with something in front of the print feedout. Then, with the same required maintenance on my part to get things printing right.)

So, obviously, one should keep things away from in front of the printer…unread junk mail, one-inch-high stacks of dead bees, slim volumes of verse.

Other discoveries: find a paper that works well with the Kodak. Avoid getting either the cheapest paper or, inversely, an expensive, too-stiff paper that is literally too thick for the gears to work with. I found that Staples 98 Bright White Inkjet paper works well. During my year of ownership, before I arrived at this paper choice, I have also, at times of poverty, used papers that were too flimsy (gears would pull two at a time, and again, if the paper is not pulled correctly, you risk smearing of ink on printheads) and others that were a bit too slick or had a lower quality, roughened composition that, I believed, contributed to paper jamming problems due to “fuzzing up” (paper lint accumulation). So, once you find a paper that works well, stick to that one. I have found mine and I am staying with it.

As a general remark, I have found that paper jamming occurs but seldom, but I will say, once it occurs, it’s a real PIA to resolve. You have to pull out the paper tray and all but upend the printer to pull out the jam. And even then you end up with torn paper in there, so you have a legacy of shreds to clean out here and there. This can cause some printing hell, but with the right paper choice, not putting too much paper in the paper holder at a time, and a using paper that has been protected from curling in humidity (just keep the paper stored flat in its plastic wrapper, not out all naked in a big stack, where it can collect moisture from the air and curl), you will probably have a good result.

Maybe some of this stuff will help somebody out there. I like the Kodak ESP 9, and if it keeps chugging along, I’d buy another one down the line. But with comments like the ones I’ve read here, I will keep my eyes open to any situations that I can’t live with (like constant printhead replacement, mindless paper jamming I can’t resolve with some simple home fixits, and so on). I would go nuts if I had to contend with that crap all the time.

    Good luck to all.

I am the world renown expert on the ESP3, “Machine from Hell.” Went through all the trials and tribulations, spent more money on cartridges and time on print head cleanings than I care to relate, upgraded to the ESP5 courtesy of Kodak, and can cut to the chase. Here it is:
Kodak’s cartridges don’t hold much ink. They perform a head cleaning every time you perform a new print task and will deplete your cartridges, whether you use color or not. Kodak upgrades the printhead every so often to discourage the use of generic brands of ink. It is a losing battle once your printhead starts to mess up to keep it going, because the SOP to properly clean it requires using ink, not manually cleaning the delicate beast. Print quality is fair.
All that being said, Kodak has great customer support. And you will need all of it, I’m afraid.

  • michael pearson

My purchase of a Kodak ESP 3 printer is the worst printer purchase I have ever made. Maybe it’s because I not only trusted Kodak but also expected so much from them after all the hype.

As another poster stated, you have to have both a color and black ink cartridge in the printer for it to work–which is ridiculous. For a printer that touts itself as a money saver, it makes no sense that you HAVE to have a color cartridge. Everyone knows that if you want to be economical, you only print using the black ink. But not with this lemon of a printer.

To make matters even worse, the printer constantly had to be recalibrated or you had to clean the print nozzle. Both of these activities use (guess what?) the color ink, depleting the cartridge so that you run out of color ink quickly–which then renders the printer useless until you get another color cartridge.

If someone comes up with a hack to trick this stupid printer into thinking the color cartridge is full, please let me know. Until then, this piece of junk is relegated to being a scanner only.

May Kodak burn in….well, you get the idea.

  • MadJak

Don’t believe Kodak’s ad campaign for one minute. The ink may be less expensive than others but, the cartridges last half as long than others. I can confirm what Michael Pearson has posted. I think Kodak should be taken to task for their false claims by way of a class action law suit. If there is a lawyer reading this blog and would like to take them on you can rest assured there will be plenty of victims that will sign up.

  • Carol Saunders

I have been using Kodak ESP 3250 for three months now. I bought it because of the ads that boast LOW COST INK. Well, it is low cost at first, and if you don’t print often, you’re okay.

I use my printer for graphic art, personal home use and just about everything else..including scrapbooking. And it is NOT CHEAPER in the long run. The cartridges print 1/3 LESS pages~!!! I replace one each week. Often the PRINTER MISS READS THE INK LEVELS or won’t let me print.. even if the black is almost full. It DRIVES ME CRAZY. I have to stop and go to the store to print a black n white when I have plenty of black. There is ALWAYS COLOR LEFT IN CARTRIDGE when you toss it, because the printer REFUSES TO PRINT AT LOW LEVELS. I am off to buy a new Lexmark.

QUALITY – Is less than desirable.
IF YOU HAVEN’T GOT IT YET…RUN…THEN BUY SOMETHING ELSE~!!!

I bought a kodac printer because of the cheap ink.Nice joke. The cartriges have a chip that won’t let you print when they run low.You can’t refill them because the chip can’t be reset. They hold almost no ink and run out constantly.Yes the cartriges are cheaper but you go through them 3 times as fast so what do you really save. Then there are all those other issues listed in the comments above. DON’T BUY ONE OF THESE PRINTERS

Thanks for all the advice on Kodak printers. I’m looking to replace my Cannon printer. I feel it uses a lot of ink in a short time, and both Cartridges cost close to $60.00 a month if printing a lot. I think I’ll stay away from Kodak. I’m looking for a good printer, and a little less money to spend on ink. I was told today at Office Max that the printers with the 3 or more ink cartridges are cheaper to use, because when one color goes out you can replace it right then. Each on is about $16.00.

      Hello Jan,
You may wish to consider getting the cartridges refilled as well at Walgreens, Cartridge World or other stores.

  • Trevor Tilley

I also have an ESP3 Printer and like others on this forum have had nothing but trouble with the print cartridges.IIn the time I have had this I have used 3 Black Cartridges and 6 Colour ones. This is dispite the fact that I hardly ever print in colour.
I have previosly been in touch with Kodak relating to this and I have been sent a new print head with instructions to download new software.
I then kept a record of the number of copies printed since that was installed along with a new Colour Cartridge.
The Colour has now run out and number of copies printed has been a total of 88 sheets. Most of these have beeb ib black only, one in blue and a odd one or two nwhere a odd word has been hightlighted in colour.
Been on to Kodak once again and in reply they are sendind me another print head?
I am positive that this will not solve the problem as I can gather this is not a one off problem.
I might add that in selecting Draft print instead of normal, there does not appear to be any difference in print quality, has anyone else noticed this?
Why can Kodak not be honest about this and admit there is a problem with the ESP3 and take it off the market.
I, for one, will never buy Kodak again.
“Buy Kodak and save money on ink” – what a joke
    Why can Kodak

I bought an ESP 7. I have had a new printer sent to me after numerous atempts to fix the paper jams with techs. By the time I talked to about 10 of the techs (which were very hard to understand) I knew how to take an ESP 7 apart and put it back together. Got the new printer, now having problems with it. It litterly drives me insane, to the point of tears and it takes alot to do that. I need a printer I can depend on for my job. I have 20-30 items setting in my e-mail to be copied for work and cannot get this accomplished. I am now getting ready to make the dreaded phone call to try and get something done regarding this ESP 7 printer. I will be on the phone for 2 hrs. or more considering I don’t get cut off . By the way did I mention you cannot understand these tech people. Does anyone know a different route to take, like to the top, or to someone in America? I suggest buying a different printer.

  • Paul Adams

Here I am again not being able to print a paper I have to have because my color cartridge says it has run out. I only need to print in black and white but it’s not going to happen. I just got off the phone with Kodak’s customer service who can not answer any questions other then saying I’m sorry for every question asked. Don’t try to shake the cartridge to get some of the color down it will come out easily as it is now on me my clothes and desk, but their sorry. I have delt with this for a year, same old story. I can’t wait to trash this thing. I guess Kodak’s right they are sorry.

      Hello Paul,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
I seriously doubt that anyone who reads these comments would even consider buying a printer from Kodak.
      Regards, Ron

I hate to say this but what is the solution to cheaper ink? Today I went to Sam’s to get a color cartridge for my HP printer. The best I could do was $75 for two color cartridges and one black. That just seems like a lot of money on cartridges. My wife has purchased the cartridges in the past so maybe its always been this expensive. Still I want cheaper ink so what do people recommend?

  • Rolf

“$&##*%%^” and other comments of an unprintable nature. I am very happy with my ESP 3………IF…..you disregard the fact that it :-
    1) Picks 2 OR MORE sheets of paper up at the same time.
    2) Manages to mangle the paper 50% of the time (the cost to the rainforests of this manglilation (it’s a word…lol) is dependant on how many sheets it’s picked up (see point 1))
    3) It prints BLACK text in a rather lighter shade of grey (presumably due to it using my colour ink ALOT!!!)
3A) It uses ALOT of colour ink (I realise this is a repeat…lol…but it DOES!!!)
3B) It presumably uses more electricity than necessary due to the red LED flashing telling you that your colour ink is running low (almost CONSTANTLY!!)
    4) The Kodak AiO Home Centre only seems to work when run with administrator permissions.

My advice is fairly simple……….NO, NO, NO!!!

  • Diana

Just piling on here, but I have had an ESP 7 for about a year and a half and although it has worked most of the time, it hasn’t been great. The black ink last will only last for about 150 pages at the most and that’s using draft quality. I don’t think I even got 100 prints from the color cartridge. This is far fewer pages than Kodak claims. So even if the ink is cheaper, you need to buy it often. I am not impressed with photo printing quality. I usually end up going to Kinkos for photos anyway since I have yet to find a home printer that does a good job.

Lately, it’s starting to have a loop of telling me there is a paper jam when there isn’t. And then to reinstall the printer head over and over. I’m afraid I’m getting to point that others have mentioned above of having to replace the printer head.

Overall, I would not recommend buying the Kodak ESP7.

  • Clem Frieckie

I have an ESP7 and it’s the worst thing I’ve ever purchased. Eats cartridges like candy. Print quality is rotten.

If a cartridge is empty, forget it. You can’t even SCAN!!! The printer/scanner/hunk of junk just keeps reporting it’s “Busy” so you can’t do anything.

Tech support is terrible. Been told on numerous occasions they were sending me new cartridges or print heads. NEVER received one even though I’d follow up with the ticket number. Get no response from their tech support.

If you are thinking of buying one of these to save money on ink. HA. You’ll replace the cartridges at a rate of 3-4x more often then a good HP or Epson. The cleaning cycle (which runs every time you turn it on) will chew up 5%+ of your ink cartridges. I’ve emptied a color cartridge without ever printing a color picture.

Run, don’t walk, away from these when you see them on the shelf!

I have a Kodak ESP 3 All-In-One. I had it for a little over a year. It just went up on me. My daughter bought one because I told her she should because the ink was sooooo cheap. She had hers a little over a year and the printer went up. Both of us had the same issue, the printhead. When you call Kodak your warrentee is up and they want you to buy a printhead until you put up a fuss. The printer itself when working was okay. It is very loud and takes a while to get itself together to start a job. It’s like an old person trying to start their day. Very slow. Other than that it makes nice copies. Buyer beware, it only lasts a year.

  • stephen faygo

had the ESP3 for year and a half, thought it was ok, [just trusted it to do what it should do!]
Don’t often use it, once a week maybe.
6 months ago black ran out so I changed it, week later it ran out again. made several half hearted attempts to work out why, as the printouts were coming out blank although the printer was going through the process of printing. for the last 6 months we’ve had to copy anything we want to print onto a ‘pages’ [we've got it connected to a imac] page and change the font to print out in blue which seems to work ok most of the time though very time consuming.
After reading the other posts I wish I’d contacted kodak earlier as it was still just under warrantee to sort the print head out. I think I’ll go back to using my HP as I’m fed up with spending time on a 0845 or whatever number it is to talk to someone in a foreign land who I have trouble understanding. don’t want to go down this road with Kodak.
Is there a way I can buy a new printhead from the uk and fit it myself?

  • wendy green

i own a kodak 5300 all in one and it was 59.99 and yes the ink is cheap bu t the print head went bad before a year was up and then after two years it went bad again, the bad thing is i cant get a rep on the phone and when i do get one she says that the number that i am not able to get through on is the onlt number i can call, email doesnt work, chat doesnt work, there is no way to order it online and i needed my printer two weeks ago. i will never own another kodak printer!

  • Violet Hills

please save yourself some time and money, and nerves trying to understand Kodak rep.It is very trying as none of them I have gotten speaks English..Don’t buy a Kodak 5300. I bought one 2 years ago. I had problems right away with this printer. I talked to a Kodak Rep, and it was established it was my printhead. I told them I was going to take it back to Wal-mart where I puchased it I was talked out of doing this as I was told that they would furnish me new printheads as long as I needed them for free.
That was a lie. Today I was told I would have to purchase a new printhead if I wanted one.
I wish I would have returned it right away. It would have saved me time and trouble getting new printheads every 4 months, and now being told that what I was told was a lie. I was always a Kodak fan, but not anymore. I never saved money on ink, so don’t believe that lie either.

  • Amburgey

Don’t buy Kodak Printers there is a defect in the printhead that if even for a small period you don’t use your printer the printhead dries out and renders itself non-usable. After one year warranty expires the printheads cost 24.99 not to mention the cost of the ink. I have had two printheads go out after printing pictures and just printing documents. The suspicious part is they have went out at the same time of year for the last two years. I am not talking about ink cartidges I am referring to the printhead. The reason why HP and Lexmark dont have this problem is because the printheads are built into the ink cartidge. That is why they ask that you recycle their ink cartridges and send them back they clean the printheads and refill the cartridges. Additionally with having a new printhead everytime you guarantee top quality prints and do not have to wait for a printhead replacement.

  • Demetris

My power cord and adapter is broken/not working? I checked to replace these parts and they cost ($39.99) is half of what the printer cost. Kodak ESP3 (89.99) Any suggestion for any similar power cords and adapters.

  • e s

All Kodak printers suck especially the ones that are all in one. I have stupidly bought 2 printers different series and they both lasted less than a month. One was esp 3 and esp 7 they both had the problem with the fading black ink which unfailably dissapear in a couple of hours which you will end up printing blank papers. Kodak is junk dont waste your money, you end up paying for so much ink just trying to correct the problem. Ended up spending hundreds of dollars on ink alone and never printed anything. Hell with Kodak.

  • Julie

I have the ESP3. Bought it about a year ago. While ink is cheap, it doesn’t last long, and I recently had a problem which was diagnosed as a bad printhead. The Kodak rep asked me if I’d replaced it within the last 90 days. Um, what?! They did send me one, free of charge THIS TIME, but I will NOT be replacing printheads every 90 days or whatever. This printer is VERY noisy and loves to get paper jams and grab more than one sheet of paper at a time. I am not impressed with it at all! I will be saving up to buy a new printer, NOT a Kodak. Good luck if you get one! I had a Kodak camera, which I HATED and now I can say I have a Kodak printer, which I HATE! Never again will I buy Kodak!

Purchased a Kodak ESP 9250 printer from a national reatiler online and received it on December 22 ( A Christmas present from Santa). The wireless setup was very straight forward and had the printer installed in a short period of time. I tested the printer on December 26 by copying a page, worked great! The next day I printed a picture of the kids opening their ‘gift’ from Santa, nice picture. On December 28, I turned the printer on and the printer informed me about an error code, a paper jam. I checked, and rechecked the printer, found nothing. Each time I checked for a paper jam and pressed the ‘OK’ button to resume, the error code changed. Three different error codes kept me on a wild goose chase. After two hours of that, I called Kodak online support. After an hour of jumping through the same hoops I’ve been jumping through, the rep informed me that the printer is defective. HA! I think the idiots that designed the piece of plastic are defective. That’s three hours of my life I’ll never get back. One good thing about this is the fact that I purchased this ‘printer’ from a reputable national electronics store. I will return this ‘printer’ not for an exchange, but for a full refund. Do not waste your money, or more importantly, don’t waste your time.

I am an am imaging professional. I have been using Kodak print products for more than a decade and a half (@Jeff – new manufacturer??? New to you, maybe… the print industry has been using Kodak for 50 years or more…)

For non-inkjet, Kodak leads by a wide margin. Their continuous tone printers are fantastic – fast, colour-fast, impeccable quality.

For inkjet I have used all the majors over the last 30 years – HP, Lexmark, Canon, Epson – none of them are pain-free.

I have a very expensive HP borderless A3 printer that loves eating print heads at about $150 a time… three in two years for around 7250 A3/A4 pages.

As with all inkjets, your milage will vary, depending on temps, humidity, age of paper stock, type of paper stock, age of ink, number of pages/day, etc.

This current unit is the last HP I will buy, unless they make me a really good deal…

The Kodak professional printing systems are state of the art and are leading the industry in usability, price and performance. Their consumer products may be suffering some teething troubles, but if HP is so damned good, why am I still suffering the same problems now as I was 20 years ago?

HP mechanicals are sound, their software well sorted, but the delivery of ink to the page is still sloppy.

You won’t find many HP units in professional hands – apart from their wide-format plotter/printers used for banner and advertising production – for a reason. Expensive and unreliable.

That being said, they have great service options – they need to.

  • IamDefiler

I have owned an ESP 7250 for about 6 months now. I never had any issues with the print heads, the print quality is about average, it does drop the wireless connection every now and then, and it does make a little bit more noise than previous AiO printers I have owned in the past. But the main issue I have with this printer is this…

It drinks ink like a sieve. Sure the ink is half what HP or Epson or all the other guys but it goes through ink easily 3 times as fast. Also, it uses color ink when printing B&W! WTF? I don’t print much with past printers I would say the ink would get replaced about once every 4 to 5 months. This is with 4 kids and a wife all in school. With this printer, I would say ink lasts maybe 1.5 to 2 months (literally) and this is with only two kids and my wife in school.

I know it would be the lawyers getting 95% of the money in the long run but there seriously needs to be a class action suit against Kodak for this scam.

I bought the Kodak 5210 all-in-one one Dec. 30, 2010 and have had to contact Kodak six times since I bought it. When I got it home I set it up and it worked fine. When I went back to use it a few hours later it wouldn’t scan, so I tried to call Kodak but kept getting hung up on. Live chat worked so I used it and the person was able to help me. The all-in-one started scanning. On Jan 3 I go to use it and it doesn’t scan, so I again use live chat since you can’t call, it got fixed but wouldn’t work a few hours later. Again I contacted Kodak through live chat and after removing & reinstalling everything for the third time I was told they needed to do remote assistance of my computer. I was told to call the phone number but just kept getting hung up on. Thought about taking it back but decided to give it one more chance. I spent two days trying to get through. I contacted live chat to tell them I can’t get through on the phone and they tell me to keep holding even though I have told them the phone hangs up. I called back and and used the option of self service. After choosing a couple of options I was able to get the option for an operator. Had to wait about 15 minutes to get someone, who then put me on hold. About 15 minutes later I got someone who did a remote assistance on my computer. He did what I had already done with live chat but at least it worked. I was on the phone a total of an hour & 40 mins. I checked it today and it doesn’t work so I called. After sitting on the phone for 30 mins I hung up & decided to go get my money back and find another printer.

Kodak use to be no-1, But now they are just out for the corperate buck no more replacement printheads if not in warranty, They sent me a 30% off code through e-mail, the lowest priced printer that I could use it for was 179.00. One day later I saw the commercial where they were giving 20% off on most printers. So dummy me bought the printer, 7200 series I dont even need over half the bells and whistles on this thing. I just hope the printhead last a little longer than the guarntee

  • Aleta Albert

I have read various websites and/or blogs about the Kodak ESP 7 printer. Seems like the standard response from the tech support in India is to send a new printhead. They sent me three and finally sent me a reconditioned printer. I was miffed because I had a new printer I couldn’t use for over a month and then got a reconditioned replacement after I had just spent money to buy a new printer based on the Kodak name. I have seen complaint after complaint about the ESP7 and they all have the same frustrating story. The reconditioned printer has been working fine with a few annoying moments. I do like the quality of the prints but if someone asked me if they should buy one, I would tell them no.

  • Darrell Parks

Kodak ESP 3. didn’t use it much and it still wore out. Takes forever to boot up. Noisy, printhead dies at the drop of a hat. Customer-”No-Service” doesn’t help, barely spoke English. Uses ink at a high rate, if it sits more that a couple of days, the first thing printed will smear. Other than 35mm film Koday makes nothing I want.

  • Daniel J. West

I purchased an all-in-one Kodak ESP5210 printer from my local PC World, I have had it for 3 months and I’ve only just replaced the ink cartridges. I print out photo’s and letters week in week out, so very impressive.

I have copied a few certificates too and I have also used the printer stand-alone by just plugging a memory card (SD) in to the front. It is very easy to use. Idiot proof as I like to say.

    THE BAD NEWS:

The printer has stopped functioning properly as of yesterday. The printer is pulling in paper violently and printing text/photo’s out in all different directions. The text/photo’s are coming out wonky (sorry, best word I can think of to describe it).

I have tried ringing PC World and Kodak, Kodak keep running through various different diagnostics such as; re-aligment, change of printer head, printer ink, different paper etc. All the which I have replaced. I have spent a lot of money trying to fix this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have only had it 3 months and it’s under guarantee, Kodak aren’t offering an exchange and the printer is pretty much useless.

    Help?

  • Daniel J. West

Kodak offered to exchange the product after my fourth call, the new printer was delivered the very next day. Luckily I was in for the all day courier. The replacement was a blatantly a refurb as there are a few marks, I’m not overly fussed though, I just want the product to function the way it should. Let’s see how I get on with this one.

    Overall a good customer service.

  • Rachelle

Bought my Kodak ESP3 over a year ago and have had NO problems. I also have this printer shared with other computers of different OS’s and I found I had to install it the “back” way like a network printer. \computernameprintername. It worked perfectly after that and on 3 different OS’s at that. Had a problem when using a KVM switch for monitor/keyboard/mouse but with a rebuild of the ‘main’ pc, that was resolved. The printer tried to take over and if I had the switch plugged it, it had a hissy and just wouldn’t work at all until I unplugged the wireless mouse. I had to disregard the switch for awhile but as mentioned after that rebuild and reinstall, works awesome.

Having an issue where I get one blank sheet of paper first with everything I try to print…then have to submit the print job again. Easy enough to work around. Other wise, you can’t beat the cost of ink and it’s an awesome little printer. I would for sure get another but maybe wireless next time. The cord they gave me with it was way to short! No problems with scanning, even with low ink as someone mentioned. Simply rebooted the printer and then attempted the scan. Like a charm! Good luck all!

  • Brian Adams

I bought a Kodak ESP3 about a year and a half ago. I was very impressed with the cost of the ink. The quality of the prints are only ok to good. Here is the deal I barely use it compared to most people, I looked up usage stats online. It’s broken already. no longer scans. OK it was a cheap purchase. It was cheap to maintain. But ultimately it was just cheap. I will not buy another Kodak printer. I have owned many printers, every one but this one worked as I replaced it. Repeat! I will not buy another Kodak printer.

    • http://wp3.lockergnome.com/nexus/blade/ Ron Schenone

Hi Brian, try this Canon for $100. Works perfectly and is wireless.
