Google Chrome - Next A Google OS?

I have been an avid Firefox user for the past four years. I gave up on using Internet Explorer because of the lack of security the browser provided. Firefox was a better option and I felt safer when surfing the web. That was then, this is now. At a recent security conference for hackers, it became obvious that Google’s Chrome is now the browser of choice since the hackers couldn’t attack it. But there is more to this browser than just browsing the Internet.
We have all been waiting patiently for Google to offer us a operating system to replace Windows. Each year we get closer to this becoming a reality. Think it won’t happen? Think again. Microsoft has stated that Linux is their real competition and not Apple. Why does the mighty Redmond giant see Linux as a threat?
From what we have been told, Google runs their operations on Linux. They also have embraced open source completely. Which brings up an interesting point. Why did Google come out with their own browser which is based on Firefox? Did Google believe they could do a better job at making a secure browser? If the hackers can’t crack Chrome one could conclude that Google has suceeded.
What I envision is this. A Google Linux OS based on Ubuntu, similar to gOS, that incorporates everything that Google has to offer. A Google Linux OS that also uses Chrome. An OS that will operate fast and provide superior performance on Netbooks compared to Windows 7. Most importantely an OS that is superior in protecting itself against attack compared to Windows. An OS that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg like Apple does.
But am I prejudiced? Is my bias for all things Google showing through? What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Chrome is NOT based on Firefox, it’s based on Webkit (which is the HTML engine core behind Apple’s Safari).

I agree that Google will come out with an OS in the soon future. They would be really good at it as well. I think that unless Microsoft cleans up the way that they do things they might get in trouble. The only thing is that I can’t find anything that the Google OS could offer that another OS doesn’t already offer.
PS: Apple’s OS doesn’t cost an arm and a leg it is cheat compares to windows. It is the computer that cost. (I hope Apple will allow their OS to be installed on any computer some time in the future. If they did that no doubt OS X would be really popular.)

I totally agree that Chrome is the New Browser of the future. There are so many hidden applications that come bundled with this browser that certainly leaves explorer on it’s shelf. More importantly though, the simplistic approach to its collection process and ease of use leaves nothing but total satisfaction to the user. With Firefox Google hasn’t completely abandoned it, in fact, they have improved it by amalgamating both into one?

Hmmm, I see no real need for Google to spend time and resources on an operating system based on Ubuntu. Google needs to focus on getting a Chrome version up and running on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions. For a light weight OS for netbooks, Google needs to look at redefining Android.
I think Microsoft understands that Apple is only a splinter in their finger, and Linux is a giant tree about to fall over and crush them with many entities, Google being just one of many, chopping away at the base of the tree.
That’s how I see it!.

The big market is big bussiness. If google can get large companies to switch from windows to a google OS peoples home computers will convert as well. They need to get in bed with companies like Dell and Intel so that computers at cosco come with google OS. They need to asure people that all their old windows programs and files are compatible.
Since Windows Vista everyone has wanted to sweep microsoft under the rug. Windows Seven might be a microsoft rebirth, but I am tired of getting gauged by microsoft every step of the way. “Oh, you want a word processor??” ChaChing!, “an office suite?” ChaChing ChaChing!, “a new OS that works every three years?” ChaChing, ChaChing, ChaChing!”
So yeah, go after large corperations and get them to convert their entire complicated infrastructures over to an open source unix based OS. Good luck! EMC? VMware? your swimming with the big puppies now
