E-Mail:

A Reader Wants To Know Why People Don’t Use I.E.?

I received a comment from a reader named Don Williams who inquired:

I have been hanging with IE7 and it works fine for me, at least up to a point.

If I open more than about 3 tabs strange things happen.

Please update me on why Mozilla has become so popular.

In the olden days I used the paid version of Netscape; I think it was the father of Mozilla.

Comments appreciated.

I replied to Don’s comment with the following comment:

Hello Don,
The popularity of Mozilla for both Firefox and Google’s Chrome can be best summoned up this way. Microsoft has been playing catch up to the Mozilla browsers. Firefox had tabbed browsing for several years before I.E. In addition the Mozilla community has stepped forward and there are add-ons that a user can use to customize their systems to their liking.

I personally have been using Firefox for over 4 years, because at that time it was more secure than I.E. I use several add-ons to block ads, block scripts, check weather, assist in downloading and so forth.

Then there are those who just dislike anything Microsoft so Firefox is an alternative, like Netscape was before Microsoft killed it. This time around Microsoft is going to have a tougher time killing Firefox or Chrome, which is based off of the Mozilla project.

I’m using Chrome now to test it against Firefox since Chrome uses a ’sandbox’ to isolate any bad stuff from jumping onto your system.

I am sure others will share their experience.

So what is your opinion? Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari or whatever. Share your thoughts with Don.

Your comments are welcome.

I personally am on a Mac most of the time and I use Safari. That is what came on the machine and that is what I use. I have tried FF and other browsers only to turn back to Safari. Safari 4 I think will be a nice browser as it is very light and extremely fast. By the way I do use FF on my PC. And as a web developer I can say that IE is just a pain.

What else? I keep stick with Opera, and i’ll wait for Opera 10 finalized

ACID 3 100%, inbuilt rss, mail & chat client, fastest rendering engine, most secure browser, compact setup (only 5mb), etc just suit what my business preference

Other than that i’ll usually use FF when i do web design (together with Opera, Chrome & *Damn* IE)

One . VOTE . Here . FUR . IE

Hi Denny,
Your vote has been recorded. LOL

Diagram of browsers by quality:

IE Opera Chrome Firefox Safari

There is debate about the ordering of the last four, but not about their position compared to IE.

Chrome is not based on Mozilla. It uses the Webkit engine which is what Safari is based on.

What Do You Think?
