Internet Explorer 8 Arrives Today

Microsoft has announced that their new and improved Internet Explorer 8 will be available today, March 19th, 2009 at noon EDT. The Redmond giant describes the new broweser as faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Sounds famaliar doesn’t it.

On their blog site Microsoft actually decribes their new browser as:

Today Microsoft Corp. announced the availability of Windows Internet Explorer 8, the new Web browser that offers the best solution for how people use the Web today. It can be downloaded in 25 languages at http://www.microsoft.com/ie8 starting at noon EDT on March 19. Internet Explorer 8 is easier to use, faster and offers leading-edge security features in direct response to people’s increasing concerns about online safety. A new study commissioned by Microsoft and the National Cyber Security Alliance and conducted by Harris Interactive Inc. shows that 91 percent of adults in the U.S. are concerned about online threats in the current economic climate, and 78 percent are more likely to choose a Web browser with built-in security than they were two years ago.

“Customers have made clear what they want in a Web browser — safety, speed and greater ease of use,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. “With Internet Explorer 8, we are delivering a browser that gets people to the information they need, fast, and provides protection that no other browser can match.”

In response to extensive customer research and input from tens of millions of customer sessions, Microsoft developed Internet Explorer 8 to focus on what matters most to people. The security enhancements offer protection against existing and emerging security threats online. It blocks two to four times more malware attacks than other browsers; cuts down on the time it takes to complete common tasks on the Web such as searching, mapping and sharing, including navigating 15 of the 20 top worldwide sites; and blurs the lines between the services they use daily and the browser used to access the Internet.

During the past few days I have been trying Google’s lastest offering of their browser Chrome. This new browser is fast. Whether or not IE 8 will be able to meet the speed that Chrome demonstrates. Also Mozilla is working on a new variation of Firefox. The browser wars continue.

Will you be trying the new browser. Let us know.

Comments welcome.

I’m Gunna . . Get-It .

Hi Denny,
I just got it and it is very, very good.

I am excited because they have an easy add-on system, with database. I am really excited to be able to download things like adblock and no script for IE8, and see how it does. Firefox loads slow and bloats on memory, and I think IE8 might be a good switch (god I thought I would never say those words)

Heh Jeff,
If you have the time would you try this for me. Get a free copy of Process Explorer from here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

It does a better job of showing which processes are sucking down memory. It actually can replace task manager and the information is more accurate.

Check out IE8 and check the processes being used. Last night I had 5 tabs open and I found IE8 was using about 160MB of RAM.

Like you I thought that IE8 would be lighter on RAM than Firefox. Let us know your findings.

Thanks, Ron

Announcement from Microsoft

“We’re sorry, but you won’t be able to download Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Beta at this time.

Windows 7 Beta already includes a pre-release candidate version of Internet Explorer 8 that is optimized for that release. Windows 7 enables unique features and functionality in Internet Explorer 8 including Windows Touch and Jump Lists which require additional product tests to ensure we are providing the best Windows experience for our customers. We will continue to update the version of Internet Explorer 8 running on Windows 7 as the development cycles of Windows 7 progress and plan to include the final version of Internet Explorer 8 in the release candidate version of Windows 7 later this year”.

So they are about to ship Windows 7, but it will include beta software versions, which people will have to PAY for?!?
Excellent!

TioPepe,
I don’t believe they will charge for IE8. But thanks for the info.

What Do You Think?
