Version 9.0.86 I added .bak to all .mht and avgrest.dll but this didn’t stop the nag.

Tried the .mht edits on AVG Free V9.08. They didn’t cure the malware (Yes the frigging popup IS malware: Its the kind of thing we’re trying to prevent!)

Had a look in the instructions again and they were only renaming the avgfree_xx.mht files (xx depends on the language)

With AVG free there are a load more .mht files.

mht files can be opened with Opera so I had a look. *_All_* the .mht files are adverts.

I renamed all the .mht files to .mht.bak

Still kept getting ads.

Finally I also renamed the file AVGRESF.dll to AVGRESF.dll.bak

I can confirm this works with AVG Free 9.08 under WinXP Home

SUMMARY

1: Close the AVG Interface window if it’s open

2: Rename ANYTHING with a .mht extension to .mht.bak

3: Rename avgresf.dll to avgresf.dll.bak

Sorted.

I have removed all the AVG files but I still get the AVG notification everytime I open OUTLOOK. I cannot find any reference to AVG anywhere.

Any suggestions?

I would strongly advise against upgrading to AVG v9. In the new version, there is a process that runs for hours at a time in the background continuously pinging your hard drive. Many people have complained about this. It happened to me when I upgraded and it got so annoying that I uninstalled v9 and reinstalled v8.5 (then the annoying process went away). I’m waiting until AVG fixes this flaw in v9 before I try upgrading again.

BTW – the process is avgchsvx.exe. If you google on this, you’ll see the problems people are having. If you try to stop the process, it just restarts. It is related to an “optimization scan” that is supposed to only run once for many hours — after that your scans are supposed to be very fast. That’s the theory. But in practice, for me, it just kept running. Maybe it would stop for a while, but in a couple days it would start running again for hours at a time. If this is the way it’s supposed to work, I’m switching to a more traditional scanner. If it’s a flaw, I wish they would fix it. Either way, I wish they’d tell users what’s going on.

I personally would upgrade to AVG 9, which is still free, since I believe it is a better product. Just my 2 cents.
