Remove AVG 8.5 Notification Area In Free Version

Back on August 8th, 2009 I did an article on how to remove the notification area from the free version of AVG 8. [Original article is here] Since than, version 8.5 has been introduced and the old instructions no longer work. Yesterday reader Sime provided the script that now needs to be run, using the same instructions I originally provided. Here is the new updates information:

Follow the below steps to disable the appearance of the irritating AVG 8 notification area:
1. Open Notepad or another plain text editor.
2. Copy and paste the following four lines from this page into the text editor:

@echo off
ren avgmwdef_us.mht avgmwdef_us.mht.bak
ren avgresf.dll avgresf.dll.bak
ren avgfree_us.mht avgfree_us.mht.bak

3. Save the text document containing the above three lines in the location where AVG 8 is installed. By default, this will be C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8. Save the file as something like “AVGNotifyOff.bat”, without the quotes. It really doesn’t matter how you name the file, so long as you can identify it, and it ends in the “.bat” extension, so Windows sees it as a batch file.
4. Once the file’s saved, close the text editor, navigate in Windows Explorer or My Computer to C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8, locate the batch file document you saved in step 3 above, and you should be able to run the file by pressing and releasing the Enter key. All the batch file does is rename two files with a “.bak” (backup) extension, so the files are still there, it’s just that AVG can’t see them any more, and you should find that the bottom line of the AVG user interface window no longer displays the “Hide notification, button” item.

Note: Trying to run the batch file more than once is useless unless an AVG program update has replaced the two files which have been renamed. This trick is subject to stop working if AVG releases a program update which uses a different method to display the irritating notification.

If you should want or need to undo the above trick, all you need to do is navigate to C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8, locate each of the two files with a “.bak” extension, press and release the F2 function key to bring up the rename dialog, press the End key to move the cursor to the end of the filename, then press and release the Backspace key four times to delete the “.bak” extension, then press and release the Enter key to keep the new name. This procedure must be done three times, once for each of the two files with the “.bak” extension. However, you shouldn’t need to undo the trick.

I hope you find this trick useful. Enjoy.

Comments welcome.

Thanks to Sime for providing this usefull information. Two-thumbs up!

Isn’t it just easier to tell users to rename those tree files, instead of letting them create a batch file? Or else provide a download for the batch file, since it will be the same for every system.
As far as i’m concerned, with your target public of inexperienced computer user, you could update your script to point to the default installation directory for further simplicity.
(WTH? Let me do that for everybody:)
*****
IF you installed AVG to the default directory, paste the following 4 lines in notepad and save it somewhere as “avgnonotify.bat”, then double click it.

@echo off
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgmwdef_us.mht” avgmwdef_us.mht.bak
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgresf.dll” avgresf.dll.bak
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgfree_us.mht” avgfree_us.mht.bak

Thank you stim. Your expertise is appreciated.

You repeatedly refer to “two files with the “.bak” extension.” when the batch file renames three files. I’m guessing a typo?

Perfect solution,

but in addition to all mentioned above for those who use another language, you need to add 2 more lines:

ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgmwdef_xx.mht” avgmwdef_xx.mht.bak
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgfree_xx.mht” avgfree_xx.mht.bak

Where xx needs to be replaced by the language code of the local language you have installed installed.
If you do not use these extra lines the “us notification” will be removed, but the warnings in your local language will remain,
resulting in the impression that nothing has been changed.

For example: if you have installed the dutch version (Nederlands) replace “xx” with “nl”

enjoy your “warning free” local language version.

Nice! Thanks for this post! I hate that nag screen.

I renamed the 3 relevant files and the nag screen disappeared, as expected.

The next day, AVG reported my license as being invalid, and I could not use the program at all.

As soon as I restored the names of the files I could again access the AVG user interface and the license was reported as being valid.

AVG seems to have found a way around this method of disabling the nag screen, at least in my experience.

In order to use AVG Free 8.5, I have resigned myself to seeing the naggy “notification area”, unless someone can come up with a better fix.

C’est la vie.

Ow, I am sorry for being mistaken in my previous post. I must say this is due to the 8.0 version which required the avgresf.dll as well as the avgmwdefxx.mht to be changes…

It is actually a lot simpler:

for default US language:

IF you installed AVG to the default directory, paste the following 4 lines in notepad and save it somewhere as “avgnonotify.bat”, then double click it.

@echo off
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgfree_us.mht” avgfree_us.mht.bak

or

other languages:

@echo off
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgfree_xx.mht” avgfree_xx.mht.bak

for example in dutch it would be:
@echo off
ren “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgfree_nl.mht” avgfree_nl.mht.bak

So, Capithia, you can sigh of relieve because I have been running with these setting to this day, updated to the last defenitions, and I still have no problems.
for those of you who are interested, just simply double-click the avgfree_xx.mht file to remember what it looks like before renaming it to .bak. All problems solved…

Kind regards, freestyler

yes, I know, 4 lines should be “paste the following line (copied text, my bad) and typing to quickly :
it should be “changed” in stead of “changes”

Thanks for the tip about turning off the nag screen.
But I had to do a little more. Because I had installed AVG8, I installed AVG 8.5 as an update rather than uninstalling 8 and doing a full install of 8.5.
This left some renamed files lying around from the AVG8 nag screen tip so when I ran this version’s trick it didn’t work.
Once I deleted all the previous .bak files in the folder and then ran the script again, the trick worked.
Cheers

Thanks Silverback. This could explain why some folks are having issues with the process.

Wow! I can see that some people can really be annoyed by this notification especially on a highly rated free anti-virus software. I would like to help. There is no point in going into the program folder to make changes that can possibly screw up your system if you do the wrong thing. Besides, AVG can change it on every update and you are back to square one. Here is a foolproof method to make it disappear, provided you follow these instructions very carefully.

1. Double click the AVG icon on your desktop. The AVG Overview window should appear. If it doesn’t reload AVG.

2. Carefully move your moose so that the cursor is at the top of the window.

3. Left click your moose and carefully drag the entire window to the bottom left or right corner (depending whether you’re a democrat, republican, conservative or an outright commie) to the point where you no longer see the notification.

4. Test it by minimizing the window. Test it again by closing the program and restarting it. In both cases the window should return to the lower left or right corner without displaying the notification.

Good Luck!

….or maximize AVG window :)

For the past two days a NEW peice of AVG nag/adware has begun to appear about once every twelve hours. a popup window labeled “Information”. This interferes with normal useage of the PC. I’m in IT. I recommend AV solutions to private and SOHO users. Adware and nagware both fall into the category of ‘Malware’. If my users require the additional features found in the full edition I recommend purchase. For all persons maintaining websites of truly free software, I recommend reclassifying AVGFree as ‘Malware’. If you are in IT I recommend uninstalling AVGFree from all of your users systems, find and install a non-Malware alternative and block the grisoft websites to prevent accidental installation of aforementioned malware. Some may suggest that I have an axe to grind. Not so. I simply don’t have time to waste on liars.

Digg this :)

I agree what LLayr said, To me, AVGFree now becomes adware. It means it is part of Malware now. Is there any differences for AVGFree to pop up its own ads from tracking cookies? If you’re playing online game, you definitely will notice that your game is affect by it because it takes up your CPU time and bandwidth. And it will even disconnect your connection while you’re playing your game, when the ad is popped. Unfortunately, it looks like most anti-virus free software are doing it such as avant and AVGFree, not sure Avirta - even Avirta is not doing now, it may join the club soon.

Sorry I don’t know if this is the proper place to ask a ? about AVG nag screen. My old desk top has been out of commision for 1 year due to my son getting a laptop and having the DSL service at his laptop. I’m running Windiows 98 still and having no problems, I put a either net card in to get it back online and when I went to update AVG 7.0, I got the nag screen. I looked for the AVG 8.5 directory and didnot find one, just AVG 7.0. There is a Grisoft Dir but also only contains only .7.0. I looked in WIn.ini, regedit, confiig.sys autoexe,bat, boot.ini and cant find any reciently added lines refering to the nag screen. Can anyone help me with this old computer? Thanks for any assistants, Randy. ras4141@bigriver.net

I just tried this on AVG Free 9 and it worked perfectly. Thanks

Thanks for the info. Jack.
