Remove IE8 From Win7 - Does It Really Matter?

According to Chris Holmes, over at his Repository of Knowledge, he contends that IE8 can be removed from Windows 7 build 7048. Chris provides a screen shot below:

Which make me ask if it really matters? Maybe I am missing something but I haven’t used IE for about 4 years and have personally opted to use Firefox. Will removing IE8 from Windows 7 really make a difference in how people surf? In this day and age where more and more people have become computer savvy, can’t people just download and install any browser of their choice?
Let me know what you think.
Comments welcome.
Just a side note:
Yesterday I was over at Microsoft’s Connect web site. This is where many of us get our beta testing software directly from Microsoft. One comment I read from another MVP asked why it was that the public is getting beta’s before those who supposedly have been chosen to test the software? No answer was immediately available.

I’d like to know what proportion of home web surfers use IE.

Hello,
I would think that the most likely reason to do this is to forestall any antitrust complaints from the EU.

In an institution where an IT department manages computers, there’s a big demand for it. Believe it or not, a LOT of people don’t know what a web browser is, or anything about it. They don’t even know there’s a choice in them. They don’t know popups are bad, and not to click them.
Disabling IE and installing Firefox might be one of the smartest things an institution can do.

My opinion on IE…
People use it if they have to (windows update) or maybe a specifc software/program relation.
Then a lot of people will recommend Firefox, which is cool because it will run on about any operating system and display very good results.
You can not forget about Opera… which is highly under rated in terms of speed and memory efficiency.
Google Chrome is similar to Opera in my opinion but much more minimal. It’s one of those “just browse the internet” browsers. I don’t doubt Chrome one bit just waiting on some more releases.
Oh yeah IE8… I would swap it with Opera or Mozilla Firefox for sure.
