Microsoft Working Hard To Improve Search

Microsoft is currently testing a new search engine called Kumo to replace their failing Live Search. The testing is currently being tested internally by Microsoft employees, before going public. Microsoft has struggled to get their search vehicle to be used by the public, and is currently in third place behind Google and Yahoo. There is also the possibility that Microsoft may still buy Yahoo.

According to a recent article Microsoft executives state that:

“There’s a good deal of excitement brewing over this test, both internally and externally, which we’re always glad to see,” Microsoft Live Search general manager Mike Nichols wrote in an online message.

“Our hope is that our employees will give us great feedback on our new features and that it all becomes part of the external experience soon.”

The Internet has buzzed with speculation regarding whether Microsoft intends to replace its Live Search with Kumo since an internal memo written about it by Satya Nadella, a Microsoft senior vice president, was leaked online this week.

Microsoft said Tuesday that the memo that ricocheted quickly about the Web “is in fact accurate.”

But this one statement:

“There’s a good deal of excitement brewing over this test, both internally and externally, which we’re always glad to see,”

Begs one to ask. Are you excited about Kumo? I for one am completely satisfied with Google. Which also begs one to ask. Are you excited about Windows 7? Microsoft buying Yahoo?

If I got any less excited I would be in a coma.

Comments welcome.

I think Microsoft search has a positioning problem from the very beginning. Google has that leadership position as a search technology specialist. Yahoo search is riding on the popularity of Yahoo portal. MSN portal / search couldnt capture the imagination of internet generation. Either Microsoft couldnt gear itself to the internet paradigm or it saw that in the long run Internet could fizzle out ( as it burst once ). Or even it may be that Microsoft is secretly hoping that internet will die. Internet is the primary source of openSource technologies, file sharing communities and software piracy. This business model is quite different to the what IT majors are famliar with.
Anyway, good luck to Microsoft with its new search engine.

Ha i think I’m qualified for a job at MS

I screwed up posting my last post at the wrong spot.

Sorry about that

As they say, Errare humanum est

All the best

What I don’t understand is that they make several versions of 1 product. Heck, improve Live to its full potential, it still lacks a lot of stuff. What makes them think that a new name “Kumo” would be any different?
