AVG 8.5 Free Ready For Downloading

On March 3, 2009 AVG Technologies came out with a new and improved AVG anti-virus/spyware software program. I downloaded the new version that evening and have been using it in place of version 8.5 free edition. Thus far I have found no problems with the software and it works just fine.
So what has changed between version 8.0 and 8.5? According to the AVG site:
NEW! Identity theft protection
AVG Identity Protection lets you shop and bank online, secure in the knowledge that your passwords, account information, credit card numbers, and other personal details are safe from identity thieves. It’s a valuable extra layer of defense that detects and blocks new and unknown threats before they can cause harm.
I did note this on the Free forum concerning version 7.5:
Support for AVG 7.5 Free will be provided until February 28, 2009
AVG Technologies has mentioned so many end dates for AVG 7.5 that it has become difficult to tell what is truth and what is fiction.

Thanks for the nice words about 8.5, Ron. Sorry about the inconsistency in published end-of-support dates for 7.5 - have alerted the web team to this. One minor point - the company dropped the Grisoft name in January of last year - AVG Technologies is the official company name now.
Thanks again

Thanks for the update. Have you noticed any performance improvements or anything else. I’m now going to download and update my machines. This program has always been the least power hungry.
On a side note, its always nice to see when a company representative posts on a blog. It means they are listening.

You are most welcome Pat.
Thanks for the correction about the name.

Hello Gavin,
I thought the same thing. It is a good sign when a company posts on a blog.
As far as performance goes, AVG 8.5 is exactly the same as always. Reliable, resource light and simple to use.
I have been using AVG Free for about 5 years now and haven’t looked back. I also have the paid version on my personal laptop.

I’ve been using AVG for about 4 years, but cannot get the new 8.5 to install. I’ve used 2 different computers, one running XP, the other 2000, and both times, the downloaded files are corrupt. Can you offer any help?

Try the download from CNet:

thank you for the link. I used it, and dowloaded the new 8.5, but when I installed, I got some errors, referring to an old copy of Roxio,,??, and the install still shows version 8.0.238, AND, now, even after 2 restarts, my email scanner is disabled. Help!
I’m trying the download/install on my xp desktop now.

Hi Mitch,
If you have ANY software from Roxio on your system [it may have come preinstalled] find out what it is and get a patch for the software from Roxio. Apply the patch and than try the AVG install once again.

Thanks. I was just about to search for it, though it beats me why I would have it…there’s no CD burner, but someone DID blast the hard drive, after it locked, and “updated” it to windows 2000. This old “lapdog” have some challenges! BTW, AVG’s fine on my xp desktop.

I downloaded AVG 8.5 pro free trial version earlier this week. It seemed great for about 2 days but I have had to uninstall it as it began preventing me from fully accessing my ISP. I guess that is the ultimate in internet security!!!!!
Have any others had this problem?
Back to AVG 7.5 now - lets hope that many more do the same.

Hello Don,
Just curious. What is your OS and what service pack?
TIA, Ron

Hi Ron,
Thanks for the response. I am running Vista. My ISP is TVL, the only one available here on the small Pacific Island where I live.
I wonder if the free version of 8.5 might be free of the same issues. Any thoughts on that?

Hello Don,
Do a custom install and uncheck the Linkscanner feature and see what happens.
Let me know. There are many free alternatives for the Linkscanner feature.

I just bought a CD AVG to install on all the laptops in my house ( I have 5 total - w/ kids) How do I download for one computer then for all the rest. I mean, what is the best way for us so all our computers are AVG protected without having to download / purchase 5 times?

Thanks Ron for the helpful advice. I will have trouble downloading a file that size again as the previous download was done in NZ on a decent connection last week.
I will try just the free version AVG 8.5 this time as maybe a better chance of an uninterrupted download. I assume that the comments re custom installation will still apply to the free version of AVG 8.5?
Regards
Don

Hello Don,
Correct. Both free and pro have the custom option, which are basically the same. I have the pro version on a Vista laptop with SP1. The others [3] in our home are using the free edition.
All the best, Ron

Hi Margot,
If you have a CD with AVG on it and it is the paid edition, you will need to purchase additional licenses. OR you can use the free edition of AVG that does a great job as well.

Hello Ron,
I downloaded AGV 8,0 a few months ago, and i was very happy. It worked perfectly and I was recommended to my friends!
and english is not so good, if you didn’t reconize
Than something happened; it wasnt working correct and
seaching the net, I ‘ven’t got the green signes anymore !
So I try to uploaded it to 8.5 on the offical site; AVG.
It doesn’t work, so I removed it and tried to download the whole new version 8.5; it failed, got the message; Log machine installation failed Installation: Error: Action failed for
directory Log: setting directory access rights Invalid parameter specified
???? I don’t understand a word of it; The first time it downloaded itself without any problem.
Do I have a virus on my computer, is something wrong with
Vista and avg free 8.5 or anything else?
Would you please help me?
And please in simple terms, because I am a computer dummy
Thank you very much!

I also found this on the AVG forum:
Download the AVG ResAcc utility from our website.
Run the utility and folllow the instructions.
When finished, restart your computer.
Run the AVG Free installation to repair AVG, add components or uninstall the program.
