Over at the Microsoft blog they have an article that covers how WGA will function in Windows 7. Basically it is similar to Vista but with a few minor changes like nag screens ever hour if you do not activate Windows 7. In addition Microsoft states why it is important to activate Windows 7 with this explanation:
Hopefully the WGA in Windows 7 will operate correctly and people will not be locked out of their systems like what happened in previous versions.
What do you think of WGA?
Comments welcome.

I’m against it. I am against copy protection in principle.
I spent a couple of hours earlier trying to get back the DRM information for magazines I had gotten through Zinio, to no avail, simply because I changed the revision of the Zinio reader. All the wasted effort for something that is so small.
As for Microsoft, I think it is ridiculous that we see how XP was being given away in China - that is, freely allowed to be pirated, with full knowledge of Microsoft (in other cases, it was being sold for $3/copy) - simply to try to quell the development of a market for Linux, while at the same time, here in the US, legitimate users were pulling their hair out over false positives with WGA.
Microsoft is not some whippy-dip software company that has to worry about insignificant rates of piracy, they have insane profit margins to make up for that. One copy of Office to a Fortune 500 company makes up for at least 10 copies of pirated XP.
With Vista or Windows 7, why bother, only the fanboys will want them, piracy will be very, very low. I thought I would be moving to Vista 64, but after seeing that it is still a pig on 8GB of RAM, I’ll be using Fedora or SuSE. And on other machines, with 4GB or less, my trusty copies of XP. i’m hunkered down until 2014. or Windows 8 (maybe) [all are legit, yet I refuse to allow the WGA Check garbage to be installed by Windows Updates]
Just this morning, I read about new concerns about Vista Ultimate piracy - what a joke - only those who can afford big iron will run it, and then after trying it, many will revert to what they had before. It’s such a non-issue.

Hi Marc,
That’s the real joke. China pirates everything and nothing is done. Why is it we in the US are the ones who get punished? Crazy!

I must say that I am glad Microsoft introduced product activation in XP. Windows Genuine Advantage is the very reason I am happily typing this message on a Linux box. I always wanted to give Linux a spin, however just could not seem to find the time. WGA got my attention… I quickly found time to explore Linux and have never looked through Windows since.

I think this is the reason Microsoft fears Linux more than Apple. Especially since Google has embraced Linux.
