Vista Won’t Start – Reader Needs Assistance

Posted by on Feb 22, 2009 | 17 Comments

For the past week or so I have received several comments from a reader named Mario in which he has described his problems with Vista won’t starting. Here are the conversations:

Dear Ron Schenone
I need advice. I got problem when Vista is loading at the start. It get freeze there. When I’m going to shut down or restart it, I can boot only in Last Known Good Configuration, but not always.
Actually my Vista is clean new copy week ago installed, and I haven’t got any viruses or something. My drivers are up to date. I haven’t much programes. Also my hardware is new, and I am using oem motherboard. Could be some hardware error, my ram memory is ok because I tested it. My software is new so what should I do? Please I need help, I tried with ps2 tastature I found out something here, but still it freezes :( ((

To Which I responded:

Hello Mario,
There are numerous reasons why Vista or any version of Windows won’t start properly.

If you have two sticks of RAM, remove one stick and reboot. Do the same with the other stick. Remove it and reboot. Is there any difference or does the system still hang?

Try using CCleaner to clean out any gunk hiding on the system.

Do a disk defrag.

Let us know what happens.

Mr Ron Schenone,

I tried everything… Actually first I defrag my disks and I used CCLeaner but nothing happens. Vista can’t start…
Even I formated and installed it on another partition but same problem I can’t start :( ((((
Today I remove one of my ram memory stick, also second one but still system hang :( (((((
I have drivers only for my wireless stick and graphic card.
Please help me, I dont know what to do anymore…
My configuration is,
Motherboard: Intel Foxconn P965 965X7AA
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6600 2.4 GhZ
2GB Ram memory
Graphic Card: GeForce 9800 GT 1GB.
I got two hdd one is 300GB the other one 500GB
Could be some hdd error?Thank You Mr.

So what do you think? Mobo problem?

Share your thoughts.

Sounds like it. I’d have him get a working copy of Ubuntu and see if the LIVE DISK will run.

Also, if he could clarify what ‘ps2 tastature’ is, that might help.

Also interesting is the fact that he describes the motherboard as OEM. It might be interesting to know who is the OEM partner – that would begin to tell – also, is the Vista disk OEM also? The same OEM? Is this a new install, or did problems start after a working configuration was established some time ago?

Hard to do from a distance, but a working Ubuntu disk is where I’d suggest starting.

Thank you Marc. Ubuntu might be worth a shot. Thanks for the suggestions.

Ubuntu booting correctly lets you know the hardware is more or less OK.

Mario should go back to whoever sold him the PC and get help. He might have a bad hard disk or Windows/Vista image (Last known good configuration message may be pointing to this).

    Dear the oracle; Ron Schenone

There is much more in my problem. Actually when I bought my PC with my OEM Vista Business 32 bit edition, it worked great. It was before 2 years. After some 6 months I decided to install SP1. And after installation Vista always can’t load at start. Then I remove my SP1 and everything was ok. And I decide to install XP and it worked great. Now I moved to Vista with SP1 and again problems. So I think that I got problems with my motherboard or probably with my BIOS. I think that SP1 is getting trouble because of my chipset or something.
What do You think about this, is it possible to try to update my BIOS because is from 2007 last updated and try like that.
Otherwise only my hdd is wrong if no mobo, because I tried with my ram memory and software applications, remove etc.. but nothing help. I still think that my MOBO is the problem.
    Thank You

    Hello,

Has the user done a repair installation? Are the proper device drivers installed for the hardware? What sort(s) of test(s) were performed to verify the memory and for how long?

    Regards,

My first suspicion was a flaky stick of memory but Mario says he swapped them out with no joy, so the next critter I would suspect would be a bad, or underpowered, power supply. If the power supply tests as fine, I would unplug the second HD and try the primary drive on a different plug (I’m assuming the drives are SATA). I would also look in the BIOS and make sure all the settings are proper as to front side bus speeds, memory speeds, etc. Also, he needs to check and make sure his fans are all operating (including the video card fan) – a dead or slow fan can cause the flaky problems he is experiencing. If all the above checks out, I would say time for a new motherboard.

So actually XP is working well no problems at all…
So I got problems only with Vista, maybe as I said before because of my chipset of mobo…
These days I will try with another mobo and update of this one FoxConn Intel p965 Bios from 2007.
Also for the ps2 I thought that I got problems because my tastature is with USB connection so I try with ps2 cable tastature but that not helped. Still stuck at the load part.

    Hello Mario,
Well it sounds from your last posting that your hardware is OK. I would venture a guess that SP1 is updating some driver that is not loading properly., You have two choices. Dump SP1, or try and find the errant driver.

    Hope this helps.

    Dear Bruce

I got 620W power supply and no problems at all!
Fans, are ok its not that the problem. Also everything is alright in BIOS, but I still can’t find out if its good to try to update it…
Also, repair don’t help I said that already…

I can’t find answer and conclusion of my problem, but I still think that mobo is getting problems…
RAM memory was checked with memtest and I unplug them, there is no bad ram memory stick or some error…
But I can’t find professional answer to my question if SP1 is my problem because of my chipset of motherboard…

    Dear Ron Schenone

I finally succeed in my problem !!!
I’m so happy because I resolded my problem which was blocking normal enter to my operating system for about 4 months!
Actually I could boot Vista, I tried everything, I tried changing my ram memory, my hard drives, updating drivers… formating it on another partition.
The problem was I get stuck at loading, but I finally did it!!!
I UPDATE MY BIOS, and that worked!
Actually now I did clean install Vista SP1 and no problems at all!!!
I’m so happy to manage this really! In my previous posts I already said that maybe my BIOS is getting problems and I was RIGHT!

It just did an update early this morning and refused to restart. I put in the installation disc and chose repair failing that it went to restore to a better time in the scheme of things. Then update did it’s thing all over again and this time it got over it’s bad self. Got to have VISTA OS on a disc “Some how, someway…” There’s a place for us, a time a place for us..” There seems to be a song for everything in life.
