First I want to give credit to my friend Jim Clark from Idaho, for sharing some of the tips and tricks that have been discovered in Windows 7. Microsoft has allowed the MVP’s a lot of latitude in not only testing Windows 7 but also other new upgrades they are currently testing. Some are covered by NDA but others like these tips and tricks just may make your life a little easier.
One of the new features is how the taskbar in Windows 7 functions. It is somewhat different than previous versions of Windows that most of us have been accustomed to using. But most of the features that some of us use can be found in the new taskbar. You just have to know where to look and how to modify the taskbar to your liking. I personally like a clean desktop with no folders or icons on it.
If you would like to put your folders or even the recylce bin on the taskbar do this:
Right click on the taskbar and open up the Toolbars menu and click [check mark] Links. You can than drag folders to the Links bar you have created. This will place a shortcut in the bar for you to use. I also found I could add the recycle bin here as well. You can expand the Link toolbar to add more stuff.
You can change the way the Start button works from Shutdown to either Hibernate or Sleep by doing the following:
Just right click on the taskbar and select the Start menu tab. You can than change it from Shutdown to either Hibernate of Sleep if you wish. I personally have my system[s] always set to Hibernate after a certain period of time, but if you wish to have a manual option, this will work for you.
Over at the Windows Blog they have posted that on or about February 24, 2009, there will be 5 test updates for Windows 7 to check on how the updates function. On the site it states that:
These updates do not deliver new features or bug fixes. The test updates simply replace system files with the same version of the file currently on the system.

It just creates a shortcut to it. You can’t right-click and empty it, for example.
It’s the same old jazz you’ve been able to do since, what, Windows 98?

Am I missing something? Or perhaps the people at Microsoft are showing their lack of familiarity with the way that the sentence structure of the English language works?
Are there that many different ways that one process can work? Since there is very little dependence (some would say none) on a machine’s BIOS, once the OS is up and running, there should be EXACTLY ONE way for an update to function, and it should be a non-starter, as MS must have at least 20,000 PCs in Redmond. That would seem to be more than a large enough test sample.
Why waste the bandwidth?
