Barack Obama Coins May Be A Rip Off

Over at KATU a Portland Oregon tv station, they have a video that you have to see. Seems those Obama coins being advertised all over are nothing more than US coins with Obama stickers applied. According to the video the quality is very poor as well. Take a look at the video and see what you think.

Comments welcome.

I don’t think we need an Obama Coin just yet, lets give him a couple of years to see what he can really do.

Well, just look at the video. I find it funny that JFK on one side in silver, then the other is color’d (no pun) with this bright mosaic of Obama.

I stopped collecting coins later than 1976. These things are so mass produced they will never be worth anything. Same as the state quarters. Many people spent hundreds on these coins that even at 500% markup in 20 years will be about $2/coin. Limited edition <1000 with certificates are still the way to go.

Barack Obama himself is a rip off.

Hello Ryan,
I agree with your assessment.

It’s a well known fact that items produced as collectibles never actually become valuable. There are multiple different companies producing these “coins”, and they also have the 9/11 memorial ones, etc. Also there are the “limited edition” plates model cars, stamps etc sold on TV. One of them was talked about in a news story, it was a “strictly limited 60 firing days.”
However that works out to millions produced.
Something like a complete set in very fine condition of the state quarters will have some value, but all these privately produced, or “liberian currency” collectibles never will. The Liberian type of thing merely means the company paid some fee to a country to be able to call it that.

What Do You Think?
