40% Of TV Stations Switching To Digital Next Week

If you thought people were going to be confused about the switch to digital TV just wait until next week. Even though the switch had been extended to June 12, 2009, there was a provision in the extension that allowed TV stations not having to wait. So it is estimated that about 40% of TV stations will make the switch from analog to digital next week.

In a recent article it states that:

The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday said 681 of the nearly 1800 television broadcast stations will have already stopped broadcasting in older, analog signals, or will by next week.

The U.S. House of Representatives last week voted to delay the mandatory change by four months — to June 12 from February 17. President Barack Obama is expected to sign the bill into law shortly.

The switch is intended to free up spectrum for public safety and provide better television viewing.

But the delayed bill gave television stations, which say they’ve spent millions of dollars preparing and educating viewers of the switch-over, the option to transition to all digital on the original date, next Tuesday.

I know where I live the same thing is happening. About 1/2 of the stations are making the switch. What about where you live? Are they waiting until June or going ahead with the switch?

the way i had heard it,was that there are 2 parts to this transition,Turning Digital ON and turning Analog OFF.
Could it be possible that the TV stations are required to turn Digital ON by February 17th, but the turning OFF of Analog was moved to june 12th because the Consumers will not be ready by Feb 17th?
I hope this is the case, because then people like me who have over the air AND Cable can enjoy it.

Back in the day, when cell signal changed from analog to digital, I was irate… at least if you had static, you still had a signal that could be depended on. With digital, many times even the smallest “bar” still won’t get you a phone call.

This is the same thing that’s happening with TV service. At least with an analog signal, I could get the majority of over the air tv stations. I only get one digital station reliably, the other 7 or 8 in the area will not pick up in my basement apartment.

This is a bad idea. At least let us have a choice.

This site will let you know which direction to point your antenna to get the best digital service… which is amazing, if you have a window to point your antenna out of…
