Seagate Provides Firmware Update For Failing Hard Drives
The folks over at Seagate are providing several tools, some to determine if your hard disk is at risk, and others to fix the problem itself. You may have read here that some Seagate drives are experiencing premature failures when the firmware fails and the drive becomes unusable. The problem affects these Seagate drives:
Barracuda 7200.11
DiamondMax 22
Barracuda ES.2 SATA
SV35
Also be aware that all of the bad drives were manufactured in December 2008. Seagate also states on their website that:
Once a drive has become affected the data becomes inaccessible to users but the data is not deleted. Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured in December 2008.
Please use the following tools and instructions to determine if you have one of the affected products. If you do, we recommend that you update the firmware on the disk drive to prevent this condition.
So if you suspect that your hard drive is suspect, go over to Seagate’s site and get the fix.

Yikes! I just recommended buying a Seagate drive to a friend! It wasn’t one of the ones listed above, but still, I’ll have to watch out.

Hello Apollo,
So did I. In fact I checked my stock of parts and I have a new Seagate drive, like yourself, not one of the failing drives as of yet.

Companies are always trying to push out new products without finishing the product which leaves the product to a failure to be the next best thing. Vista was one those products. What else can I say, o ya WTF
