Is Dell Gouging On XP Downgrades?

Posted by on Dec 8, 2008 | 3 Comments

Dell has been offering a downgrade service in which certain Dell computer systems qualify for a downgrade from Windows Vista to Xp. It seemed that Microsoft was content with the idea, since it got to sell two licenses on one PC. The original pricing was $50 for the downgrade. But now Dell is charging $150 for their popular Inspiron 1525 models.

What is also interesting is that as more people by new Netbook computers, they most likely will end up with Microsoft Windows XP preinstalled.

Do you think that Dell is gouging on the price to downgrade? In these hard economic times is this a smart move on Dell’s part?

I don’t think it’s right, but Dell is using that time-honored style called ‘Whatever the Traffic Will Bear’.

As long as people will pay, the price will stay high. For many, the convenience and familiarity of XP is worth it – and Dell knows it. For many it allows a hardware upgrade with an essentially FREE upgrade to Vista when SP2 comes around, and the majority of the bugs are worked out ( or around ).

    Hello Marc,
True statement. I hope this practice bites Dell in the butt! :-)
