About three weeks ago I purchased a new laptop which came with Vista Home Premium installed. As most of you know, Microsoft has replaced Outlook Express with a new email program called Windows Mail. I normally use Windows Mail to download my Gmail email stuff, and usually do not send out any emails from the account.
But last evening I had an occasion in which I needed to respond to an email using Windows Mail. I attempted to run a spell check and received an odd message that stated my language was not supported. I went back into Tools - Spelling and it was set to English. Strange.
So I did some checking and discovered there is a glitch in Windows Mail. The fix is fairly simple.
Go into Tools - Options - Spelling and change the language to something besides English and click the Apply button. Go back and click on English and click on the Apply button. That’s it. Spell check is now working.
I hope this helps anyone who also has experienced this annoying problem.

Have been trying to resolve the same problem for a friend of mine. As the new HP Portable came with only a trial version of Microsoft Office, once the expiry date passes without one purchasing the Office version, the program may as well be deleted, which is what was done. Unfortunately, with no Microsoft product with a spell check installed, there is no spell check in Mail or as I understand it also IE. There are workarounds, cumbersome as I understand. Seems that Microsoft deletes features if you don’t use their other products but I thought this was resolved some years ago with a court case. Guess the alternative is to go to Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have the solution!!! With windows explorer, go to the folder
C:\Users\yourusernamel\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail
Delete all files in this directory with the extension “.lex”. There were three in my folder:
On my PC, there were 3 of them:
UserDictionary.lex
UserDictionary_ChangeSession.lex
UserDictionary_IgnoreSession.lex
They will be put in the recycle bin. Windows will rebuild them in this folder.
Restart Windows Mail, send a test mail and Walla! The spellchecker works!!!
I hope it works for you like it worked for me!
