Don’t Become A Victim Of Fake Obama Email

Posted by on Nov 7, 2008 | 4 Comments

Cyber crooks are spitting out vast amount of spam, using an alleged video of Obama making his victory speech. The fake video first surfaced on Wednesday and is slmming the Internet with this infected email. The email actually contains a virus that can steal your identity and also any stored information on your computer system.

According to the Washington Post, it also states that:

The messages, with such subject lines as “election results winner,” and “the new president’s cabinet?” and “fear of a black president,” direct recipients to a site featuring a picture of Obama beneath an official U.S. government seal and the domain name america.gov (the real domain names used to host these fraudulent sites appear to differ from message to message). Beside Obama’s visage is an embedded video player that reads “loading player.” A few seconds after the site loads, the visitor is prompted to download the malware, disguised as “adobe_flash9.exe”.

So be careful when viewing any email that are allegedly from our new President.

Comments welcome.

Unfortunately many people are conditioned to fall for this type of attack, since so many web sites are putting 3rd party controls into their web pages and demanding that you have the newest version in order to play the content.

I’ll bet a lot of people will fall for this one. If you have an earlier version of a content player, and a site says you have to get a newer one to play their content, just move on.

    1. Designers should not keep trying to force users to install new software on their pc’s. Make your content backward compatible.
    2. Not following #1, conditions people to think that its okay for some arbitrary web site to tell them that they need a new player, and redirect me somewhere to download it.

Once users are conditioned to accept such ridiculous web requirements, they can’t really be protected from scams like this.

They must be specifically targetted. Our company is getting a lot of the “John McCain calls for Impeachment of Obama”, “John McCain Urges Congress to Overturn Obama Election” and other such tripe in the subject line.

They’re deep sea fishing for conservatives in this area.

The hook embedded in the bait seems to be one of those infection servers that sizes your system up looking for missing patches.
