Windows 7 Preview

Here are some first observations about Windows 7 Preview.

Setup was quick and easy with basically no user intervention. Once setup finished I was warned that there was no anti-virus protection. So I installed AVG before getting on the Internet.

So what is new in Windows 7? Not much. If I didn’t see the Windows 7 logo at startup it looked exactly like Vista. :-(

I went back into Control Panel. Instead of an option to select Classic View is a replacement button to view all icons. It appears they added more icons. More is better.

Paint now has a ribbon feature similar to the latest Office.

The sidebar is no longer and gadgets sit around on the desktop.

The UAC has better control features. In Vista I just dumped it. :-)

There is a new theme area:

There are some other minor features, but whether they make the final cut, we won’t know until we see the beta versions. Someone, some where is going to call Windows 7, Vista II. :-)

Comments welcome.

I heard of this, and i always come here for confirmation, and frankly, i was surprised you had it. I thought they loved Vista, not going to make a new one so early, obviously wrong

How do you already have it?

and also, and major bugs found?

and is this the “Anti-Vista”?

If there’s time, could you try an upgrade? Setup a bunch of files on a vista desktop and see how windows 7 treats them :)

I’ll be a lot of people like me will be upgrading from Vista 1.0 to Vista 2.0. It’d be worth trailblazing the upgrade. I remember XP->Vista wasn’t terrible smooth, and it’s usually better to install a new OS on a baremetal system, but at the cost of a full backup and reformat, upgrading might be easier.

Shtanto,
I’ll try an upgrade once the beta arrives. :-)

Is a 5 second os boot time possible?

Oops, they did it again…

Making a new OS when they haven’t perfected the old ones. EV!L

Actually Diamonds, they are also working on a Service Pack 2 for Vista as well so Vista just might become as attractive to more consumers as did XP when it was given a facelift with SP2.

Vista beta SP2 has already been released to a select group of testers, of which I am one. :-)
