Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC = Problematic?

Posted by on Oct 22, 2008 | 7 Comments

Over at the GottaBeMobile web site, they have an article concerning the Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC, and many of the problems that users are experiencing with their computer. One comment indicates that for seven months Dell has been trying to correct several issues without success. The article states:

I’ve worked with Dell engineering support, solicited input in our forums on their behalf, removed registry keys, removed iTunes, fiddled with all kinds of potential USB conflicts, and more. They have reassured me that they are working on the problem. However, it has been almost seven months since I’ve had the Dell Latitude XT and most of my original problems with the XT are still there. I was certainly expecting to deal with some first generation issues for a couple of months, but this is getting out of hand. Even though the Latitude XT has the only multi-touch Tablet PC on the market, I’ve finally realized that this digitizer and its drivers are not ready for prime time.

Over at Engadget they are soliciting similar comments in which users express the problems they have experienced with the unit. But one comment caught my eye on Engadget’s site:

Not to defend Dell, but does anyone these days *not* have shitty customer service?

Interesting point. What has your personal experience been with any OEM?  Share your experience with us whether it be bad or good.

Comments welcome.

Thanks for the info, I was looking to get a tablet for my office, and wasn’t sure about which one between the Dell or a Motion computing tablet, I’ll probably go Motion now. Thanks.

Have been using the XT for 6 months and cannot recommend it. It has numerous hardware or driver related problems that seem to have no solution. It is also slow slow slow to load – the whole system seems underpowered or poorly configured.

We were recently issued the XT. At first I did not like it because of i did not feel it was not user friendly. I have not expeirence problems with driver applications. My only nock is that the pen settings are not that of the Motion, but the XT’s extra features far surpass those of the Motion. I would recommend the XT. After a little practice it is a great tool.

Well we have bought 10 XT and within weeks 5 of them failed. Common problem seems to be erratic mouse movement. Dell engineers replaced almost every parts on those 5 XT and the problem remains. It even fails on OEM image with the updated drivers. So where is the problem??? It’s a lemon sold by dell. The current fix is to restart the laptop few times and the issue gets resolved for a little while. Thanks Dell for ripping us off.

I have had an XT now for almost a year and I have had to get the screen replaced twice, two new hard drives, and my charger has not been recognized so I can not charge my computer. Everytime I take my computer to get it serviced they do nothing and send me back home. In the past two months I have blown out 3 chargers and now can no longer even turn on my computer. I am buying a new computer this week. Dell sucks
