Is Microsoft Spreading FUD About Apple?
Over at Macworld they have an article in which it states that Microsoft is once again spreading FUD on what the company calls an ‘Apple tax’. The alleged tax is what is best described as the higher price Apple users pay when compared to a PC using the most wonderful operating system of them all called Vista. Microsoft goes on to state the following:
Brad Brooks, Microsoft vice president of Windows Consumer Product Marketing had this comment:
…But, we’re also looking at the different things that you can get with Windows, and understanding what is really involved with what we call the “Apple tax.”
There really is a tax around there for people that are evaluating their choices going into this holiday season and going forward. There’s a choice tax that we talked about, which is, hey, you want to buy a machine that’s other than black, white, or silver, and if you want to get it in multiple different configurations or price points, you’re going to be paying a tax if you go the Apple way.
Mentioned also is a statement in which Microsoft states that if people want to have a Windows experience they should by a PC and not run Windows on a Mac. Say what? I don’t believe that most people buy a Mac to run Windows. They buy a Mac to run the Apple OS of their choice.
It seems that Microsoft is still not spending their $300 million on advertising that still doesn’t make any sense. ‘I’m a PC’ ? How about I use a PC. Wouldn’t it be difficult to turn a human into a PC? ![]()
What do you think? Is Microsoft losing it? Will their commercials really make a difference?
Comments welcome.

I do not agree that people are buying Macs to run OSX. If that were the case, why would Apple officially support the ability to run Windows and why are there programs like Fusion out there? The growth for Apple started AFTER the switch to Intel and AFTER they supported Windows. Apple conceded the operating system war to Microsoft once they said “Buy a Mac and you can STILL use Windows”. If OSX was the better operating system, there would be no need to run Visa or XP on top of it.
What Apple has done is build a better windows-based PC than most PC manufacturers. The industrial design of the Macbook Pro and Macbook are better than most PC notebooks. Couple the improved design with the ability to run the operating system that 90% of the world uses, and growth happens.

Actually, I disagree keepitsimple – The intel switch was done so program developers could make multiplatform software easier. They were never going to make the non Apple market go their way, so they switched over.
Its a smart move. More people can run mac’s now with an increasing number of compatible apps. Windows support comes with the Intel processor. It is a great selling point to say “Hey, you get the simplest, most secure and least buggy computer on the market, AND you can also run windows on it, with absolutely no driver hassle in the case you need to run windows only apps.”
Kudos to them for finding a way to drive sales.
