Google Protects Chrome Logo & Comic

Posted by on Oct 8, 2008 | 9 Comments

Google has taken issue with a website setup to develop plug ins for the Google Chrome browser. Google claimed that the use of the Google logo could confuse some into thinking that the web site was in fact owned by Google. The Google folks also stated that the use of their Comic specifically spells out it can be used but not changed. So what’s the big deal?

In an article over at Google Watch it states also that:

The author’s issue? Chrome is licensed under Creative Commons, so he and bunches of other open-source folkies are barking back that his use of the Chrome stuff constitutes, well, fair use.  The author wrote:

Seems pretty absurd to me having an Open Source project, and thousands of people wanting to promote and development for the platform to make it more functional and in turn gain a higher market share then tell them you cannot display any of the graphical elements on your site. It’s a bit like having a Jennifer Lopez fan site, and not being able to show pictures of Jenifer Lopez.

Good point. But it seems that Google may not want any assistance. I checked the authors site and sure enough the Google stuff is gone. So was this Google picking on a little guy? Or some little guy trying to fly on Google’s coat tails?

Google has been dabbling a bit deep when it comes to Open Source. They want the power of it, but none of the limitations (Patenting their stuff, e.g.: Android, Chrome); thus,
they throw off the balance of the legal perspective.

I understand their motives, but it’s still dangerous to play cheating games with penguins that charge at 500+ miles an hour. (The open source community.) Then again, this might prevent branches, and make developers focus only on the main project. That could be good, but it may never have been an issue regardless.

    Hi Truefire,
From what I have read, the entire Google empire is run on Linux since the beginning. Google is not new to open source and they have steered cleared of anything Microsoft. :-)

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

    Regards, Ron

Google should keep working on security, simplicity, and speed…. what they do with all Google products anyways. I think the final versions of Google+ will look and work better than Facebook! Unless Facebook does an interface overhaul.. hmm.

It just doesn’t seem that great right now, interface-wise… This is just from previews I’ve seen, of course. I wouldn’t know as I can’t access it yet… age limit..

    Not yet on Linux. :(

So it only “works for all browsers on your computer” if and only if your computer runs a Windows or Apple OS (it does work on Apple, doesn’t it – I’m using either Linux or Windows so can’t test). One day! One day I tell ya! These things will work everywhere one day…
