DVD - To Rip Or Not?

One would have thought that the ripping of DVD movies had been settled long ago, but now it is Real Networks that is in the hot seat with the movie studios. The same lame stance is once again be argued. The movie studios say that RealDVD violates their rights of protection. Real Networks says their software is for backing up a DVD only. Lets face it. There is no way to control how many copies a consumer can make. Or is there?

I recall a few years ago, reading a comment from a writer who seemed to have a simple answer that would satisfy both sides. Have the software setup to only copy one [1] copy of a titled movie. The consumer would have their backup and the movie studios would know that only one [1] copy was made. Sure the software could be hacked. But lets face it. If someone really, really wants to make a copy of a movie, no one is going to stop it.

What do you think? Do you have any other suggestions?

Comments welcome.

your right, if someone really wants to rip a movie to a disk, its impossible to stop them. I personally back up all my movies to a external hard drive, and I almost never use the disks anymore, I just play them right of the hard drive with vlc media player.

There are many programs available for ripping dvd’s, I would link to them, but I don’t think that’s a good idea. I will however link to this article on lifehacker, explaining how to do it. Feel free to take this comment down.

Hello George,
I am aware of this software as I am sure others are as well. :-)

The copyright law is so stupid, and to try to find a respectable, common sense solution to put in accord the man’s property rights to a law which wants to order individuals what to do with their own dvd-s in their homes is something not so clever.

If in USA in the future will be a law will force the people to stand up whenever they hear the national hymn, and the one who will be caught that he didn’t respect the law will be imprisoned, it will be an useful to make comments in order to put in accord the law’s stupidity with concrete facts? What sense makes a law which can not be enforced without severe restrictions in individuals property rights? Maybe one day in the future when you’ll buy a dvd someone will install cameras in your house and will listen your phone in order to make sure that you did not a copy of it. Or your home computer will be forced to send informations to FBI about your private files in order to be sure that you do not use copyrighted materials illegally.

There are only some very rich guys who think that they will make money with the generous state help. And this happens in Internet era, where sharing is value more important than ever.

In a normal world a problem like the one related to dvd ripping would not exist. If the law’s logic is broken, let’s try to keep us OUR logic and common sense.

Hi George the Second,
I concur. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. It is appreciated.
Regards, Ron
