Google Supports Gay Marriage

Proposition No. 8 on the California ballot would prohibit gay marriages in the state. Google co-founder has made a statement on the Google blog site that the company normally stays away from polictical issues. But the company is taking a stand on this proposition and opposes the the ban on gay marriages. Sergey Brin states that:

As an Internet company, Google is an active participant in policy debates surrounding information access, technology and energy. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions — Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay — we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues. So when Proposition 8 appeared on the California ballot, it was an unlikely question for Google to take an official company position on.

However, while there are many objections to this proposition — further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text — it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 — we should not eliminate anyone’s fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.

I am not going to express my personal views about gay marriages, since I also feel it is my right to have an opinion whether it be for or against the proposition. I personally believe that companies such as Google should stay out of social issues and should instead focus on problems that may have an affect on their company. But that is just my 2 cents.

I think that based on your statement regarding there stance, we now know what your stance on the matter is.

As someone who supports the right of gays to marry, I think it makes a significant difference when companies that the voters are familiar with, Google and McDonalds for example, take a position on proposals that affect their employees. It moves the discussion away from the basic pro- vs. anti-gay rhetoric and elevates it to a “what’s good for our employees and society” level.

“It moves the discussion away from the basic pro- vs. anti-gay rhetoric and elevates it to a “what’s good for our employees and society” level.”
So how is homosexuality “good” for society? It is not good for procreation. It is not good for stable marriages. It it not good for the health of the citizens. It is a life style choice of a small minority that is being elevated to mandated acceptance.
I am glad that I have a choice for search engines and eating establishments.

How does being gay affect you? Do you wake up in the morning and say “damn those gays! thanks to them my day will suck!”

There is nothing wrong with being gay and I applaud Google for this.

In a world thats quickly becoming overpopulated you complain about it not being good for procreation. I find that funny. Anyways, biologically being homosexual is an abnormally, in fact (at least in my mind) it would be considered a fetish (difference between a fetish and a kink is that a fetish is needed for enjoyment while a kink enhances it) but socially there is nothing actually wrong with it. in fact up till the time of the Christian religion there was actually common to not only have a wife (for procreation mainly) but also other lovers both male and female.

Anyways back to the actually topic of this because i could go on with facts about that forever, I think the fact a corporation like google is actually putting in there 2c is amazing and shows how much this will effect the world and that those who are on the fence should be willing to put some deep thought into it before they cast there vote.

Ron,

I’m dismayed to hear you categorize this topic as a “social issue”. The issue of gay marriage is very much an issue of *civil rights*. Like so many struggles in the US over the past centuries, this is a fight over legislation that fundamentally denies citizens equal protection for capricious reasons.

For companies to turn a blind eye while the government practices (or endorses) discrimination against its very citizens seems very shortsighted. It was due to the lack of pressure by those who could have influence that led to segregation and anti-miscegenation being around as long as it was (it took till *2000* to get it out of our laws completely!).

Working toward improving the civil rights of everyone should be the job of all companies and citizens in this country.

It would also be somewhat hypocritical for Google *not* to support this legislation. It already supports complete equality for Gays within the company, so to not take a stand on the matter would simply be sending the message that they’re only supporting these rights when they aid their bottom line, as opposed to supporting human rights because they should be fundamentally available to all.

IMO Google cannot please everyone with their decision. However I will be Googling less. I don’t support the fallout of gay marraige ~ surrogates, test tube families, disease, deminished natural impregnation and natural child birth. America is arrogant in their justification of this supposed right. Progress, human rights, politics and the almighty dollar have pushed the one important factor aside; morals. Remember those?
