AVG 8.0 - How Is It Working For You?

When Grisoft released their new version of their popular free edition of AVG anti-virus, there were many complaints posted on the Internet. Some people were so upset that they actually gave up on AVG and went to another program. So when I read in the October 2008 edition of PC World, which still recommends AVG free edition as part of a security suite of programs, it made be wonder what users feel about the new 8.0 edition.
I have installed AVG on about a dozen systems without any issues. Of course, this was after waiting for a month or so to get a updated edition that cured some of the ills that plagued the original release. I have also used a trick to turn off the notification area, which I personally found extremely annoying. Do a Google and you can locate this trick or read my original article here. Just a quick note. There is more than one way to eliminate the notification area.
But my question is this. If you have upgraded to AVG 8.0, are you still having problems? Did you just give up and use another software program?
Comments welcome.

I’ve been using AVG 8.0 on three computers since it was released. It didn’t give me a bit of trouble. The only problem that developed was that I forgot to turn off the firewall when installing certain programs and got a bad install.
Other than my own dumb mistakes, it works fine.

I have no specific comments other than it tries to push me to an upgrade a little harder and I turned off the link scanner because something was slowing down my browsing. I would say I am satisfied. It runs in the background a little better than the previous version I had. My memory use is a little higher but I installed some other things so it might not be AVG that is the cause.

I’ve installed it on hundreds of computers, and version 8 has turned me off it. On multiple occasions, I’ve been called back to clean spyware and viruses off a pc with a functional and updated avg installed. Considering the linkscanner fiasco, the hard sell, and general bloatiness of it, it’s going the way of Nero 7 (in the recycle bin). I’m switching full-time to Malware Bytes paid edition.

jumped to avira. Their score is 1% better at catching virus’s. But found that is was impossible to tell it want I did’nt want it to scan. So i’m back with AVG. which I have put on all my cusomers computers for years and found Ver.8 even easier to use. than in past version.

Oh yes, I CAN tell it exactly what I want it to scan.

“…PC World, which still recommends AVG free …” Are these the same people who gushed over ThreatFire? Did they ever try running them on the same computer? My desktop locked on three different computers when I tried to run those programs together. Why should I listen to what PC World says?
