Computers Cause Vision Problems

This should not come as any surprise, but watching a computer screen can in some cases, cause vision problems.  It is also apparent that people using smaller screens like PDA’s, cell phone texting and games also add to the problem. So now here is the question.  Are you a victim of CVS?

Well according to the article in The Bay City Times 82% of computer and gadget users suffer from CVS - Computer Vision Syndrome. The article states:

“Computer vision syndrome is basically symptoms that someone can get after extended computer use … meaning more than two to three hours a day,” she said.

More than 82 percent of Americans frequently work with a computer or a PDA, according to the American Optometric Association’s 2007 American Eye-Q survey, which identified Americans’ attitudes and behaviors regarding eye care and related issues. Supporting this, an Omnibus survey commissioned by the AOA earlier this year showed 42 percent of respondents spend three or more hours a day in front of a computer or hand-held device.

If watching one computer screen causes vision problems, would watching 3 monitors pose 3 times the risk? :-) Just joking people!

I have had floaters and opacities in both of my eyes for quite some time. Over the past year, my symptoms have become more annoying. I am wondering if eye strain at the computer caused some of these issues verses genetic tendencies. Both my Mother and Father suffered from this problem in their 30’s but stated that it went away with age.

My eye specialist told me that the vitreous gel within my eye has started receding from the back of my eye and is causing me to see floaters and opacities. This can cause retinal detachment, but I am a low risk patient at this time. I always make sure that I have proper lighting and my prescription glasses on, while working at the computer. I am guessing that by straining your eyes at the PC or on your phone, you are possibly causing the break down of your eye’s inner workings, so to speak. Could be the reason my vitreous broke down. Who knows. I understand that vision problems can be very scary. If you think there is something wrong with your vision, do not procrastinate. Get to an eye doctor and let him/her tell you about your specific condition.

Take Care of Yourselves!

I’m 15 and I have to second the study. My vision used to be great until about 3 years ago when I started doing my school exclusively online.

I have floaters, and am getting astigmatism in both eyes. I have macular degeneration in my family, so will probably get that unless I find a way to up the hydrochloric acid levels in my gut (according to Suzanne Sommers).
I spend an average of 5 to 10 hours using a computer of some type EVERY DAY! I need glasses to read the direction on EVERYTHING. I can still drive, but can’t tell what station the radio is on because its too blurry.
All this due to cathode ray tube radiation? Probably not. I am 65 and remember the time BEFORE the Internet. You may not know how good you have it.

I think I’m experiencing it lately because of so much work. Facing the monitor for 8-12 hours a day gives so much eye stress.

Hey folks - Starting in your 30’s, get checked out every so often by an eye doctor for Glaucoma. There’s NO signs in advance of it and you can lose your vision from it. If its caught in-time, you can use eyedrops to relieve the pressure and control it. Luckily I discovered mine at age 48.

Hi…that so true…..cause last time i checked my sight my doctor told me to take abreak from my laptop……He thinks that i’m spending long time in front of it……….but i dont think so…i only spend …..just 8 hours a day………and it’s not a long time …i think watching TV for long time cause more problems.

i think i kinda suffer from eye strain due to prolong use of PC. i spent 12hrs or more during weekends and 2-3 hrs in school days. i don’t experience much side effects at day besides it’s almost normal- no blurry visions or whatsoever except in focusing, i involuntarily close my eyes when talking to my friends that’s why they keep on asking me what the hell is wrong with me LOL.. i don’t know how to describe the need to close the eyes for about a minute but it just happen- always when i talk to them…sometimes i myself laugh about it! =-) i usually stare at distant objects but in no particular thing, coz if it’s that’s the case i involuntarily look away from that particular thing. in night, all is messed up to me, i usually fumble in dim light after using computer. before i go to sleep i can’t see what i want to see, it seems like it has dark/black thing in my center vision so i don’t look directly at things…it really is a pain to look for something.now this past 2 months it really worries me, i do reading mangas online and i think it just make it worse than before
it took me more time to adjust into a dark room than usual. btw i’m just 18 yrs old. and i don’t wear glasses or any aid

what should i do with regards to this? i’m afraid to consult an eye doctor =)

Hello Tina,
My daughter had a similar problem since she spends a long time in front of the computer as well. She finally went to an eye doc and needed glasses. Once she got them her symptoms disappeared.

Regards, Ron
