Google Chrome – A Big Change Is Coming

Posted by on Sep 1, 2008 | 8 Comments

All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends — all using a browser. Because we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if we started from scratch and built on the best elements out there.

It is not only the folks at Google who spend most of their computing time online.  For most of us who surf the Internet on a daily bases, all we really need is a browser.  So why would Google come up with their own browser?

I believe the answer is fairly simple. Google has in place a number of applications for simple computing needs like word processing, spread sheets and so forth. Most everything else we need to email, chat and so forth are already in place. So now with a Google browser, we can throw our computers as we know them in the trash.

There will come a day when we will  just use a browser, and no operating system, to boot up our computers and access the Internet to do our work and to play. :-)

Comments welcome.

Maybe mainstream users will get to have a ‘netbook’-type experience but I’ll definitively need some local apps to stay in control, even in the future.

I will probably download Google Chrome to try it out. Google is really going to have to hit the jackpot to get me to switch from Firefox 3 though.

Funny, no operating system to boot up our PC’s? The term “boot up” alone means there is an operating system (or at least on-board firmware) to make the basic decisions. Perhaps you mean that Google’s bootable browser would become the new OS. Hope they have drivers for my USB webcam!

Chrome is not a bootable browser, not yet anyway. It will require an OS, and at this point the only OS supported is Windows. No surprise, as Windows is the largest user base. I think maybe Ron is trying to skip to the last chapter of the book…. and in this case the last chapter has not been written.

Thanks for all of the comments. It is appreciated.

Maybe no OS is just wishful thinking on my part. :-)

But I believe it is Asus that allows a user to surf the Internet without having to use the main operating system. It is a mini version of Linux with Firefox so as of now an OS is still required. :-)

To say Google Chrome is only at version 0.2 I think it’s pretty impressive. Once it gets to 1.0 I think it will be amazing. I am so please Google picked WebKit. It is in my opinion the best rendering engine out their, hence why I’ve used Safari on Windows since it was launched. With the introduction of Chrome hopefully we will see the end of Opera. The boss of Opera says they will not be willing to use V8 or anything from Google Chrome which is open for everyone to use. They sound like MS.
