How To Get DSL From AT&T Without A Landline

Back on May 3rd, 2008 I wrote an article about how you could get DSL service from AT&T without having to pay for a land line connection. [See story here.] But it appears that AT&T are playing a shell game in which the consumer has to uncover the ‘pea’, but you may have some help from an article written over at the Consumerist. The article covers a tale of one consumers attempt to get DSL service without landline, only to run into a stone wall.

When reader Nick tried to sign up for ATT “naked DSL” or “dry loop” service (getting DSL without having paying for a landline), a curious thing happened.

AT&T said his address doesn’t exist. But when he went through the process to sign up for bundled service, more expensive, with landline phone service, magically, it could find his address.

Which jogged my memory of an email I received concerning a similar experience by another reader. So what is going on? It would appear that AT&T may not wish to make it easy to get DSL alone, naked, by itself, but it can be done. Here are a few suggestions to try before giving up.

So here’s the secret process Mike figured out:

After your last article on this subject I called ATT about this they told me they would have to disconnect my dsl line and then I couldn’t get dsl back because they have changed the lenth of their what they call a loop. And I am to far from that loop now but that I can keep the service I have because I already have it.Now the interesting thing my next door neighbor about 15 feet away, had DSL from ATT before then she disconnected it,when the husband came back into the picture and moved back in next door he tried 8 times to get DSL back but they said he couldn’t have it even though he had or his wife had it before. We live in a Rural area and Att is the only one who provides DSL but we can’t get it from them eathier unless you already have it like I do,dial up is the only thing out here, according to ATT.

Awhile ago I also inquired with Verizon as to DSL availability. Their web site showed my address as “no record”. I do NOT have a landline phone, having given it up years ago with Comcast. Funny how they discover ones address whenever a package deal is discussed! One could always contact the FCC and file a complaint, as the’re all Common Carriers and must abide by certain rules. A letter to the state’s attorney general office might also help. Very difficult trying to crack the inards of corporate America indeed! The next time the above writers have a moment, they should consider calling AT&T and asking for a supervisor. Most CSR’s don’t have the authority to make decisions but rather follow a script in front of them.

Just my thoughts. There was a time when companies actually wanted to increase their customer base and offer service. Now one deals with reps speaking an accent tied to India.

Can’t wait to see Mars colonized. Sometimes it’s best to start from scratch and do it right the first time. What ever happened to The United Federation of Planets Ron? I guess if all the idiots were beamed up Ron, then they’d be no one left to blog about!

LOL

Hi Don,
Thanks for stopping by and dropping some of your thoughts around the place. It is appreciated.

Have a great labor day minus the labor! :-)

the “not finding your address” is not some rip off comment. Each telephone number has or doesnt have the ability to get DSXL on it. The new UVERSEis ONLY open on certain numbers only from people whose numbers generate from a box with a vrad (uverse) by it. As many people are fighting the building of the vrad box next to their other box in the area… MANY are unable to get it. so ATT is not ripping you off. when you want the bundle… they are placing you on the fiber optic runs of cable…that are ONLY on SOME peoples homes on SOME numbers. So there is no Ghost or big rip off going on.

Instead of assuming that the world is ripping you off… start thinking that you are not aware of how another man’s business works. They are not srtupid ya know. Dont you think that if they were openly lying to Millions of people that there would be HUGE repercussions? if you dont think so…ENRON!!!! Point made.

Your technical explanation is of course correct, but does little to comfort an individual who lives in an apartment building which does in fact have telephone service, and is told that phone service doesn’t exist. And please don’t use ENRON as an example, as that company was found guilty of criminal acts which ruined countless thousands of investors who lost their life savings as a result of those criminal acts.

No one is suggesting that AT&T is ripping off potential customers (at least not me), but I do not take kindly to being told no phone service exists when I see multiple lines running from the pole to the building I occupy. No other explanations were ever offered to me. Again, I have no problem with your explanation “the”, but I truly feel that whenever ANY company promotes a service, that a disclaimer be included, to prevent misunderstandings and frustrations such as those comments made here.

AND … large companies do indeed lie! COMCAST originally lied when asked if they “throttled back” their service on certain web sites and then admitted that they did, “but only because …”. I could add other thoughts here but wish to stay on topic and also to respect Ron’s service to us all.

Hi Don,
Well said. Thanks for dropping by.

The naked dsl service is available at http://www.att.com. I found it with no problem at all. At&t actually has packages that require a phone line and those that don’t. They have one that doesn’t require a landline for $19. Check it out.

My most recent communication to the liars at AT&T:

I have REPEATEDLY requested broadband access at my home/business location in Vale, NC, and AT&T has either denied access or not followed up.

My business is going down the tubes and I AM SICK AND TIRED OF SEEING YOUR BROADBAND COMMERCIALS ALL DAY LONG, BRAGGING ABOUT BROADBAND ACCESS ANYWHERE!!! I am MUCH CLOSER than the end of the rainbow, the island wreck of Amelia Earhart, or the domain of the yeti, yet you say you cannot bring me broadband. I intend to take action regarding this false advertising; quite possibly legal action. DON’T ADVERTISE WHAT YOU DON’T DELIVER. I INTEND TO COMMUNICATE YOUR DECEPTIVE ADVERTISING ALL OVER THE INTERNET!/

I called AT&T and asked for the “dry loop” - no problem. I’m saving $50 at least because I no longer have a house phone that I don’t use. Thank you.

my commit is for the loveable guy whom so boldy takes up for AT&T, and their quest to rule the world of communication.I ,like the other guy who tried to get dsl or broadband from THE Giant great, AT&T,was refused this service from at&t,and was told the reason for this was I had no port ???,availiblity,I asked why not next door and up the street does.I,ve been at this address since 1988, and many of WHO DO,S??? where not even around until a few years back.I,ve been trying to get anything but dial up for almost 10 yrs.now.So put that in your pipe and smoke it misterrrr at&t lover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read the comments and some helped and had points. but i was wondering if anyone knows any est. time on how long after they run the fiber optic that it takes to get. DsL. and also if the fiber optic is run by your house are able to get the dsl service

What Do You Think?
