Why Are There So Many Web Glitches?

The other day when I criticized Google for having their Gmail off line once again, I was taken to task by some of you who stated ‘what do you want for free’. So as we enter into the remainder of 2008, how many more glitches are we going to experience? In this day and age of high speed broadband, superior server equipment, and code that should of been hashed out to perfection by now, why do we still encounter glitches and gotchas?

Case in point. For 2008, the following companies have had glitches and down time:

Lets start with Firefox. They were going to have a BIG download day. They wanted to set a record. Bang! The servers go down when the launch starts.  So Mozilla starts the 24 hr.  count once they get their equipment fixed.

Cuil the new search engine starts off their day with a system crash. What a nice way to kick offa company start. Gee, how many people switched over to Cuil after the crash started?

July 8th Google Doc’s goes off line. I know its free so what do you want.

Amazon goes down on June 17th and millions of workers had to return to work. Productivity in the work place increases by 1100%. :-)

Plus Netflix is having issues and I’m still waiting for my movies.

So what’s my point? If these big boys have issues with their systems being run by IT professionals, how are we to trust Cloud Computing and give ourselves over to the Internet? Who is guarantee that when we need our stuff online, it is going to be available? 24 x 7 x 365.

And that is why I am against cloud computing.

Bravo, Sir!

Cloud computing is laughable for precisely the reason you state. Along those lines, I can’t imagine using a Google or otherwise online office or service. And that’s without going into the privacy issues…

If I can’t touch it and be responsible for it, who else will?

Btw, you forgot the Blackberry and iPhone outages.

How about Photobucket? Over the last days a lot of people have had trouble logging in to their albums. It seems Photobucket has improved its site beyond repair.

I sometimes get the idea the internet is held together by paperclips and rubber bands.
