Intel Releases New Mid-Range Chips

Intel has announced it will be releasing a series of new mid-range chips which include a larger L2 cache for better performance. Front side BUS speed will be at 1333MHz and the chips will use 95 watts of power. According to this article, the new chips are already available:

Several retailers already have the new processors listed on their Web sites. TheNerds.net has the Q9650 listed at $576, one of the lowest prices on the Web. Retailers’ prices are typically higher than Intel’s official list prices, so the prices announced by Intel Monday will likely be lower than those retailers’ offerings.

A bit further down the list is the Core 2 Quad Q9400 with a clock speed of 2.66GHz, 6MB of cache, and a 1333MHz FSB. This has a list price of $284 on TheNerds.net.

Core 2 Duo chips will also get a refresh. The E8600 has a clock speed of 3.33GHz, 6MB of cache, and a 1333MHz FSB. The E7300 runs at 2.66GHz with 3MB of cache, and has a 1066MHz FSB.

These new chips will bring better performance for the gamers among us.  Dell’s Alienwar division already has stated they will be using the new chips in future machines.

its interesting that they are upgrading their line when they are close to launching a new one.

gigahertz dont matter to much anymore in a processor, in gaming there is not any big difference between 3.0 and 3.33ghz, but the real differences come from front side buses and cache.

when i build my new system, im going to go with the e8400 which is just 3ghz. it will be insanely easy to overclock it to 3.33, and i intend to overclock it to 4.0ghz
