It is interesting that Dell has chosen to expand their line up of Linux based systems. One would think that Dell would not expand the line up unless there is a strong demand for the Linux only computers.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I tend to agree. The execs at Dell haven’t shown me anything to lead me to believe they are not intelligent. This move signifies that they have been successful with their recent Linux machines. What I also find interesting is that they are already using 8.04 which is a pretty recent version. I am curious to know what kind of testing process they go through with the OS.

This does not amaze me, however I’m not a Microsoft MVP either. Dell is in business to make money, and it appears that Ubuntu is making money for them. Why else would Dell add more Ubuntu machines to its offerings?

Ubuntu 8.04 is a solid stable OS. I’ve been running it since the day it was released…. with no problems. I am sure Dell tweaks Ubuntu to their machines, something that can not be done with Windows closed source software.

I live in the Linux world. Due to my work, I am also forced to live in an OS X and Windows world as well. Nothing against the other OS’, I just wish I could stick with one! :)

Dell blew it for me with regard to their customer service and shipping carriers (DHL).

I have had tremendous luck spending a little more, buying something from System76.com or ZaReason.com .

I own a System76 notebook – they go so far as to support their own drivers for things Ubuntu devs mess up along the way. Extra cost – zero, for life. I really enjoy the benefit of knowing my notebook will always be supported regardless of the Ubuntu release thanks to System76.

Dell is great for Enterprise setups and they have great prices. But the service is at par for big business, total lack of customer service due to their size.

BTW, why the “comments must be approved first” setting? That is so very demotivating from a Behaviorist “reinforcing feedback loop” perspective…
