Another Blog Quits - Cites Lack Of Personal Acceptance

So what is a blog anyway? Is it just a collection of ideas being shared by one person? Or is it a Personal Blog? Personal in that it reflects the blogger only and doesn’t represent anyone else or any company. This is what the author of The Patry Copyright Blog is stating for the reason he is hanging up his blogging shingle. In a statement, William Patry says:

I have decided to end the blog, after doing around 800 postings over about 4 years. I regret closing the blog and I owe readers an explanation. There are two reasons.

1. The Inability or Refusal to Accept the Blog for What it is: A Personal Blog

2. The Current State of Copyright Law is too depressing

He goes on to state that because he was using a Google blog site, which is available to anyone, that people were associating him as a lawyer for Google. It sounds like William was mistakenly be labeled as working for Google, when in fact he just set up a blog on Google itself.

But his second reason appears to have been the one that he actually made his decision to quit. He was getting negative in his blogging thoughts and it was spilling over to his readers.

Too bad. It sounds like his expertise will be missed in the copyright field.

But what do you think? What is your opinion on what a blog should or shouldn’t be? Share your thoughts.

Although they are fun to read, I think blogs that attempt to address serious issues are a complete waste of time (you know… like political debates).

The more you’re willing to kiss the collective ass, the more people you will get to agree with you. The key to getting the whole crowd into your camp is to tell them they ought to get all of their toys for free, and be allowed to play with them whenever they want. Anything else is heresy.

What should a blog be?
Whatever the author wants it to be.

Who determines a blog’s success?
The author, hopefully.

He will have to decide where on the scale he is between pure ego and mass appeal. Then live with it.
Maybe it’s just a personal exercise and it doesn’t matter if two people read it. Maybe it’s looking for a bit of a pat on the back. Or finding like-minded readers.

Maybe the author just wants to poke people (like a lot of commenters).

There is no hard and fast rule for a blog. It is up to it’s creator to decide what their intentions are. If people’s perception of those intentions are incorrect then that is their issue.

I have a blog  http://www.thesleepygeek.com) and have still very low readership. I still don’t think it is a waste of time. I do it for myself more than for everyone else. It would be nice to build a community and be able to help people with their technology needs, but what I am doing now still isn’t wasteful.

According to dictionary.com:
blog: an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page; also called Weblog, Web log.

I pretty much think that says it all. A person should not be reamed for speaking what is on their mind, in a media format that is geared toward that very thing. However, there does seem to be an ever increasing demand for more ‘professionalism’ in the blogging community, spurred by the mainstream media and it’s frustration over blogging competition.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone. It is appreciated.
Regards, Ron
