New Yorker Cover Of Obama - Offensive Or Not?

If you have not seen the current cover on the New Yorker magazine, it pictures Obama in Muslim garb, his wife shouldering a AK-47, an American flag burning in the fireplace, a picture of Osama bin Laden hanging over the fireplace, all of which appears to be taking place in the oval office of the White House.
This alleged satire is supposed to show the politics of fear that is being spread about Obama and his family. It is not meant to be an allegation about anything that Obama is or is not. But unfortunately it can be taken either way. One newspaper stated:
The Obama campaign, as well as the campaign of Republican rival John McCain, slammed the cover as offensive:
“The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama’s right-wing critics have tried to create,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement, reported by Politico. “But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree.”
“We completely agree with the Obama campaign, it’s tasteless and offensive,” McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said in a statement.
I commend Senator McCain and his campaign for condemning the cover as being in poor taste and as offensive. I am sure Senator McCain would not wish to see himself nor his family put through a distasteful situation such as this.
What do you think? Putting your political feelings aside, do you think the New Yorker cover was appropriate or not?
Comments welcome.

Actually, that cover was an insult to conservatives, as it is supposed to represent what conservatitives think about Obama. You have to keep in mind, the New Yorker is a liberal yuppy magazine.
As for Obama, he only attended 143 days in the US Senate, before announcing his run for the Presidency. A more accurate portrayal should have been Obama in diapers playing on the floor with his toys.

Dear New Yorker,
Thank you very much for your Obama satire (wink, wink) we agree that you had a constitutional right to print it. We are sure that in keeping with that free speech you will applaud our use of your satire (wink, wink) as our first attack Obama ad of 2008. Even though we have a higher level of awareness and a greater understanding of fairness and good taste than you, we recognize your megalomania and will publish your satire (wink, wink) unchanged in any way. It is perfect for our needs.

uh yeah it is offensive and if the obama campaign lets things like this slide it will be bush v. kerry all over again…btw lincoln had less experience than obama, and eisenhower only had a military record no political experience whatsoever so yeah experience doesn’t mean anything

I think that cover was in very poor taste. I feel that the New Yorker owes the Obama’s an apology. The cover is seen by thousands of people while it’s sitting on news stands all across the nation, people that will never read the articles inside the Magazine make decisions based on the cover. they will walk away with the wrong picture all together from what the Magazine was trying to protray.
