I think that Google is in a bubble right now because most people hate/distrust Microsoft and Yahoo, otherwise their operations aren't very efficient.

I mean, if I was CEO of Google, there would be some changes, now I wouldn't turn it into a cubicle gulag, but it wouldn't be the "lighting cash on fire" attitude there is now.

The sour grapes from the employees is because they're used to being spoiled.

Have you seen the tuition reimbursement? The health care package? The retirement benefits? The cafeteria for crying out loud???

And what other company gives you one paid working day a week to "exercise your creativity" with your own pet projects?

There are Google programmers working on the Linux kernel or Firefox (etc) for one workday each week, just cause thats what they like to do.

Hello Wolfhard,
The average pay for software programmers in SF is about $100k a year. I believe Google pays above average. There are also a lot of perks as well.

I just have one question:
If you pay $ 1425 (let alone $ 2500) per month for DAYCARE ONLY and add all the other cost of living - how much do you earn working for google!????
OK it's google - but this seems to be another dimension to me ;-) Can they really pay THAT much???

I really can't bring myself to feel sorry for them, there are people who don't have jobs, MOST people don't have jobs that pay as well as Google.

And most people in the country work for less than $10 an hour and have to get real creative and live horrible stressful lives trying to do a balancing act between a ruinous dead end job and a couple kids.

If you look at everything Google does to pamper it's employees, it's really quite extravagant, so I don't think that people who have jobs that 98% of the country could envy have any room to complain.

I read an article - from the quote it looks like the same one- and was amazed at the price. But the article states that the children are getting the kind of care that kids sent to Montessori schools get. This was prompted by Mr. Brin's sister-in-law. Although it's probably going to help turn out some extremely bright children, with all the other expenses of Northern California, the parents must be thinking that a pay raise is needed.

Mr. Brin was to have said that he didn't feel sorry for the employees. It was denied, but I can see the point.

Nowhere does it say that an inalienable right while working is childcare. That's what grandparents are for. And if, sadly, there are no grandparents, then someone must work there, that has a husband or wife that is staying at home
- or could stay at home,
by opening affordable day care, and charging enough to offset staying home, yet providing a service for the workers.
