AVG 8 Has Released SP1 For Download

If you previously downloaded AVG and experienced problems, you may wish to download AVG 8 with SP1 and give it a try.  DougCuk has been monitoring the release of SP1 and had notified me it was available. I checked the AVG site and the new release is available for download.

The file name you wish to use is:

avg_free_stf_en_8_135a1330

You can obtain the download directly from the AVG servers to make sure you get the latest release here.

If you do try the new release, let us know your thought. I haven’t tried it yet and will be giving it a go when I get home from vacation on my test box.

Comments welcome.

I received this from Lloyd Borrett of AVG. A newer version was released on July 4, 2008:

The file name you want to use is:
avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe

It’s now available at http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe#tba2

Last night AVG released an update to AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 to address the LinkScanner issue amongst other things.

The file name you want to use is:
avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe

It’s now available at http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe#tba2

Hi Ron; hope you enjoyed your vacation. Looks like the server is up and running again. It was down earlier this morning. With regards to the AVG you list … their server now has an even newer version! Last digits are: 138a1332, as opposed to 135a1330 that you show. Also, one must be careful when choosing which d/load site to use, as the C/Net site still has the old pre-SP1 version! It does tend to get confusing!

I did a test install of the SP1 release (without Linkscanner) and so far so good.

But you do need to supervise your first full drive scan if you have any support utils or large email archives. The default action of the new spyware module is to delete any suspect files. The files should be safely in the virus vault - but some have reported large archives can be lost if the default vault size is exceeded.

To be cautious I turned off the automatic heal/delete before doing an initial scan just to be safe. You will then be given the choice to approve any deletions and add any files to the exclusions list before they get removed to the vault. You can also increase or remove the virus value size limit if you wish.

Then I checked the AVG site and found they had updated the Free version again. You wait a month for one program update and then two come along - just like buses.

Program update AVG Free 8.0.138
Fixed Bugs:
Fixed problem with link scanning if “base” tag is presented in a web page. Also it should reduce traffic when LinkScanner is active.

I’d never use AVG’s software again, even if I had any operating systems that actually needed it, because I feel that they’re abusing website bandwidth (driving the webmasters bills up 20% in some cases), I’ve said before that if it was me, I’d sue them.

I think they figured out someone would, sooner or later, so they try to mask their user agent as Internet Explorer 6, and when asked to stop this rapacious activity, the CEO of AVG’s reply was “When you make an omelet, you break some eggs”, easy analogy when he breaks everyone elses eggs to make his company’s omelet isn’t it? ;)

Anyhow, Linkscanner is snake oil and it has, luckily) a very negative impact on the user’s computer as well.

I say “luckily” because without it breaking the user’s computer, they’d never have any personal incentive to remove the crap.

It came down as an upgrade for me, and it wasn’t pretty - it choked about halfway through, and then said should reboot my machine. I did so, and then was asked if a file, with an extension of mht should be saved. I kept saying no, and after 3 attempts to shut it down, rebooted the machine. (mht is an extension used by Microsoft, but this was unintelligible garbage, most likely created by line noise or something similar)

As soon as I brought up the interface for AVG, I was again asked if I wanted to save the file - this time I said yes, immediately went to the AVG directory, looked at it, and deleted the 4MB buffalo chip.

I then reopened the AVG interface, and forced an update - all went well, and as a bonus, the AVG flag once again pops up in the tray when the scan starts, so that if I want to end the scan at the scheduled time (I frequently do) I can with only 2 clicks.

I did not have a problem with the older version on any of the 3 machines that ran it, but this seems to have no problems either.

With all the false positive I have been getting with AVG, I am slowly going back to Frisk’s F-Prot (testing to make sure all is well before moving everything over, on non critical systems, sort of a pilot program - it’s always a good method when making changes…the world would be better if everyone followed the method)

Thanks for all of the great information and for the updates on the latest release. I will pass this on. I’m downloading the new version as I type.

Regards to all, Ron

Last night, I used the AVG update option to install a large number of AVG changes. This morning, IE7 couldn’t access anything including numeric URL’s. Luckily Firefox still worked.

After checking everything I could find, I finally just did a system restore to the point before last night’s AVG update. IE7 works again! Something haywire with the AVG update.
