Symantec Says July Beta Will Address Consumer Concerns

Posted by on Jul 3, 2008 | 7 Comments

As most of us know, Symantec has been labeled as a resource hog, and many of us have chosen not to use any longer. I wrote an article back in May in which less than flattering remarks were made about Symantec. [See article here.] But one of the comments came from a Symantec representative by the name of Rowan Trollope who stated the following:

I would like to respond to all the folks reading this blog, and to those of you who commented about your poor experiences with our software. Security software which slows down your computer is just plain unacceptable. I have been at Symantec since the days of Peter Norton, and I am intent on restoring our brand and reputation. I know that the way to do this is to deliver *great* software, and this is what we are working on. For Norton Internet Security and NAV 2009, I have set my goals on one single mission: to deliver the fastest security product in the world. This is a major shift for our engineering team and candidly is not easy to achieve. Rather than delivering promises and a marketing pitch, I intend to let the product speak for itself. Our beta will be out in July, and I will let the public be the judge as to whether we have achieved our goals.

OK Rowan. I’ll take you up on your challenge. When the beta hits the street I’ll take it for a spin and see what it is like. Plus I promise to give your product an even break and put my prejudices aside. Just let us know when the beta arrives.

TIA, Ron

Comments welcome.

I respect the gentleman’s ambition and spirit. Hopefully he’s still working there :)

Otoh, I’m not sure why a beta should be tried after we spent whatever we spent on their existing product(s). It would be nice if the program ran more efficiently (or tried to do less out of the box) but unfortunately that won’t make up for their sales and support pieces.

It’s bad to piss off your customers, but I suppose it’s nice that they’re doing it equally: consumers *and* enterprise.

I just recently dumped Symantec, since my subscription was about to expire anyway. I went with Avast! and couldn’t be happier. After I spent almost a half hour getting rid of all the crap that Symantec left on my system after the so-called uninstall, it’s amazing how much faster my system runs.

Well isn’t that nice. After all these years, Symantec is listening to customers! The only way I would touch Symantec again is if they completed re-worked their software. The un-installation of their product has been horrible. Upgrading to a newer version should not damage an installation. The software should have a minimal footprint while running.

And it would be nice to bring back the Norton utilities modernized for current OS versions without bundling with other useless software.

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for the comments and for sharing your thoughts. It is appreciated.

Thanks Ron. I would like to respond to two of the comments on this post. First, one member commented that they would appreciate not having to pay for a new version. As has been our policy for several years, all customers with current subscriptions are entitled to upgrade to the latest version for free when it becomes available. Second, the uninstall and install for 2009 have been completely rewritten and vastly improved. From a completely clean uninstall (without the need to download a cleanup tool), to a 1-click, sub 1-minute install. The architecture for our install process was redesigned to be similar to a Mac product install (as close to a file copy as possible).
