‘Teens In Tech’ Coming In July 2008 - Perverts Paradise?

Starting next month, July 2008, there will be a new site on the Internet which is going to dedicate itself to the teenage crowd. Called ‘Teen In Tech’ the site is being run by a 15 year old who is the CEO of the new company. This new crop of web people are called ‘teentrepreneu’ and you can bet that the venture capitalist crowd are listening to them. According to their blog it states:
Teens in Tech is planning on launching this July. We are putting the finishing touches on our service now and can’t wait to launch to the public! Teens in Tech is committed to create the best possible community for teenagers looking to become involved in technology, be it through blogging, podcasting, or any form of new media. We can’t wait to see you checking out our service soon!
Well this sounds like a great idea. But the Dad in me says that this site could also be a great fishing spot for the perverts, sexual deviants, child molesting folks that unfortunately live amongst us. It is sad we need to view this as such, and it makes one wonder what safe guards, if any, will be in place when this site opens.
But what do you think? Am I be overly cautious in my assessment?
Comments welcome.
PS I saw this over at FoxNews about a teen being missing after possibly meeting someone on MySpace.

Yes, I think you are. I visit lots of dedicated middle and high school websites (I’m a freshman) without a problem. It seems that unless this site is a myspace clone, there shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Also, I have the feeling there will be mods who can take your ip address and report you to the cops if they see anything fishy.

Hi everyone,
I am Daniel Brusilovsky, CEO and Founder of Teens in Tech. The goal of Teens in Tech is to offer teenagers the ability to experience new media. We are not a place for perverts. We will have security features that should not 100% block perverts, but keep them away.
We are still working on making the site safe, and secure.
Thanks,
Daniel Brusilovsky

Let’s not stop some good art and development of new media because of a few perverts. They will find there marks one way or another. Forge ahead!

Disgusting that anyone would even have to worry about such a thing. Imagine a world where we didn’t have to worry about such things!
Bottom line, you may think this teens-in-tech may have to worry about pervs, but what about EVERYTHING else? It seems like teens is linked to the word perv and it’s the first thing that alarms in a persons mind. You can have stalker issues, muder issues, hacker, pranksters, cult, gang, or even crazy issues that may take come creative thinking to imagine. Like that group of girls that took the oath to become pregnate and the one got knocked up by a homeless man? You wouldn’t expect that, but these days you got to be prepared to expect just about anything!
You can hold up your pitchforks and torches and scream beware, but you have no rights to mob because anything can happen, to anyone, anywhere. Why should we stop living our lives just to “play it safe?” Don’t pass judgement against this idea just because a group of nasty people have put their horrible ways into the public’s mind. I don’t really understand how it works and I’m very open minded and I usually can see both sides of the fence on many different things. Teens are in that akward stage of their lives where they want to be treated like adults until it becomes too difficult to manage and then they want to be treated like kids so it’s easier again. The whole giggle fest the girls do and the “watch me do something that may kill me or someone around me” show off attitude the teen boys have. Why anyone would want to go into that mess on purpose has me baffled. But since it’s such a taboo subject not many want to talk about in the first place, I really have no desire to try and understand why some adults like teens. I have a real bad attitude about people that hurt other people though and I say DO NOT give into them. Just beat the daylights out of them when they get in your way!
I know, I’m a hippo Crypto. I hate hate. I’m a nice guy till someone goes and gets violent and mean! Then I’m all up for doing what it takes. Like when you watch them riots on TV. I’m like SHOOT ‘EM ALL! Give ‘em a warning. Get On the Ground or you will be shot! I bet that would put an end to riots real quick if they did that a few times!
Did I just ramble?

Hey Ron:
I’m Sean, the Director of Marketing and PR at Teens in Tech as well as the Teens in Tech blogger who you quoted in your post. I saw it via my Admin Panel and had to check it out.
I just want to assure you and your readers that Daniel and I have been working with our site developers to assure a safe zone for our teen users.
As teens, we know the safeguards we need to put in place to protect ourselves and we plan on extending that to our entire service.
Thanks for checking us out, and thanks for bringing up a very important point.

Ron,
I normally love your blogs, but this one I was rather aghast over. The very fact that this was the thing that came to mind when you read this incredible article about teens taking charge of their lives, just blows me away. If teens are taught properly by their parents, and not to fear ANYTHING, they have nothing to worry about. I have raised two children/teens myself, and the fact is that adults had the right to fear them…if they tried anything unbecoming.
People are taught to be victims in our society through fear, instead of being empowered to take charge of their lives and be strong people.
The fact is the majority of ‘pervs’ are living under children’s roofs, and are family members, relatives, and close friends. The media makes a much bigger deal out of pervs that are random, than they do where they are common. This teaches children to feel alienated by those they do not know, and in my opinion, creates a very sad, and paranoid world.
