AVG 8 - New Updated Version

I noticed that AVG is using other sites [mirrors] in which users can download their new AVG 8 version. But I also noted that as of today [June 4, 2008 at 1900 hrs. CDT] the versions on the mirrors are different than what is being offered at AVG servers. As an example, over at Download and filehippo both .com, they are offer version version 8_100a1295.exe.

Over on the AVG servers [link below] the version is now 8_100a1315.exe.

Try the AVG server version and see if it helps for those who have had problems with the original AVG install.

Also I noted that the latest release has a repair and removing/adding components to AVG 8, like removing/adding link scanner, the dreaded AVG safe surf and also the Office plug ins. There is a possibility that by removing these unwanted features, AVG 8 may be more like AVG 7.5.

Just a guess on my part.

Just copy and paste the above link in your browser and the download should start. Be patient. The servers are busy.

Comments welcome.

While some improvements have already been included in the current 1315 release it appears a number of significant fixes are still stuck in Beta testing.

A member of the AVG Development Team - posting under the name Vinzenz.Ewido - and several of the Beta testers - have posted info on the Wilders Security Forum regarding the next major update to the AVG 8.0 program. Link to thread - http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=209276

Internally the AVG Team are calling this next major AVG 8 update “SP1″ (aka v8.0 build 111) - this update is supposed to resolve a large number of the current problems - including some Firefox v3 compatibility issues. However as of today this is still only available to Beta testers.

With any luck this update - when released - may at last allow AVG 8 installation to be as trouble free as v7.5 has been.

Hello Doug,
Thanks for the information. I hope this will be the case.

I had written about SP1 and it is good to know AVG is working on it. :-)

If you find out when SP1 is going to be released, please let me know.

Ron, it’s now up to (last 4 nbrs) 1323. Just d/loaded it but as yet, have not installed it. I did use the AVG server as you recommended. For some reason, I keep coming back to this program, and will give it another try. I’ve been using Spyware Doctor Pro w/anti-virus for awhile now, and it does a nice job. Fast and unintrusive, as it should be.

Have you noticed how many sites offer “reviews” of the “Top 10″ programs and how much disparity there is in these reviews? Nice to see impartial comments and observations in your blog Ron. I wonder how many reviewers out there are compensated for their kind words! LOL

Hell Don,
Thanks for the information about the new update for AVG.

You know my position. If something works for you and is doing a good job, stick with it. It sounds like you are pleased the Spy Doc.

I’m going to DL 1323.

Have a great weekend.

Just a quick follow up on my AVG 8 installation … A COMPLETE DISASTER !! I did a “custom” install, with nothing except the AV installed. Did a complete scan, including my external “E” hd, and that’s when the fun began. Things began locking up to the point where I had to do a “forced” shutdown. Still, nothing worked, and I couldn’t call up anything. Fortunately, I had my Acronis emergency bootup cd, and that, along with many image backups on the “E” drive saved me! Maybe the latest upgrade just doesn’t like my pc (??), but until I see some positive comments from other readers, I’m not playing games with it. A shame, as I was looking forward to having it in the background once again. The older Ver. 7 performed flawlessly, and I may just put it back in place.

Temp here in the Boston area is closing in on 100 Degs F, and no relief in sight for a couple of days. Glad I dusted off my a.c. for the bedroom! LOL

Hello Don,
Quick ? Did you take off the Spy Doc before installing AVG 8?

I just did an uninstall, and reinstalled used 1323 without a problem.

With that being said, about half the folks are having the same problem as you. :-(

It seems that AVG8 can not run with any other a/v or spy stuff installed.

PS Stay cool. We are at 91 today. TG for air!

No Ron, I wasn’t aware of needing to do that! It was NOT a requirement of the older version. Oh, and the Windows Defender, which is part of VISTA is not listed as uninstallable (??), so what does one do with that animal? I seldom use it, although I d/load the latest updates via Windows Updates. Ah, maybe I should go back to an IBM XT, run DOS and forget the whole thing! LOL

Hi Don,
There is a BIG difference between AVG 7.5 and 8.
7.5 was just an anti-virus program. 8 has spyware & a/v.

Windows Defender - here is how to turn it off.

I think it is going to be awhile in order for us to find out what problems truly exist between version 8 and other similar programs. I know that Spybot S&D is a known issue.

I like the DOS idea! :-)

G’day,

On Saturday, 5th July 2008, AVG Technologies released an update to AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0 to address the LinkScanner issue amongst other things.

The file name you want to use is:
avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe (or later)

If you don’t want to wait for the update process to roll-out to your PC, or you’re doing a new installation, then the up-to-date version is now available for you to download at http://www.avgfree.com.au
