Hello, AVG 8 Tech Support! Anyone Home?

In a twist that I find hard to believe, it seems that AVG tech. support is totally unsure when support for version 7.5 really will expire. On their forum they originally stated that the free version would continue until 12-31-08. Now it seems a new warning pop-up is saying the new date is June 25, 2008.

Reader DougCuk stated:

I had hoped that once we were
past the May 31st deadline things would become clearer, and we could
coast along to the “real” deadline of December 31st.

But as of today we now have a new “official” deadline - of June 25th
2008 - displayed as of today by the installed v7.5 Free program.
http://www.stargaterebellion.net/images/AVG_June25th.JPG - Link to new June 25th Popup - received on a system running XP Pro.

To confuse matters further I received the following email response from AVG Customer Service a few days ago:

“The AVG FREE Edition 7.5 will discontinue as of May 31st 2008
however the AVG 7.5 Paid Editions will continue until December. This is
not a marketing ploy.

I think AVG are having a serious communication problem - and in the
process are damaging their reputation as a leading security company.

This is starting to be extremely annoying since the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand at AVG is doing. It now seems that AVG may be changing the expiration date once again.

Comments welcome.

“To confuse matters further”?? It seems to me that DougCuk’s Customer Service e-mail clarifies things - support for 7.5 Paid Edition finishes at the end of the year, support for 7.5 Free ends June 25th [brought forward from the end of the year].

Unless I’m misunderstanding, all that’s happened is that they’ve brought forward the shut-off date for the free version; not that confusing!

Hello Herman,
I noticed this last night. There is a newer version of AVG 8 that is available from AVG’s servers. Other download sites are still offering the older 8 version.

Regards, Ron

Hi Mike,
What was confusing is the originally AVG FREE also expired on 12-31-08 as per the AVG forum.

Also there is a new version on AVG servers ending in 1315. The original post and at some mirrors is still 1295.

To add to all the “confusion”, the new free version 8 breaks my wireless internet connection on my Dell 8500 laptop with a SMC Barricade G wireless Hub. Luckily I have GoBack which makes it very easy to return my computer to pre-installation condition.
I have tried the various newer 8 versions as they come up, no difference.

Hi Axel,
Thanks for the information. These problems are really getting to be a PITA for some people.

I just posted the following on the AVG Free support forum in response to yet another thread about the continuing stand-off between the two sources of “official ” information:

We have a stand-off here between the Free Forum position and the “official” AVG Technologies position. The Forum moderators here are adamant that they trust their AVG contact “michaelhd” - who posted the 31st December 2008 cutoff date on this forum - while AVG support and marketing (and the nag screen popup) are continuing to stick with their 25th June 2008 cutoff date (extended from original 31st May date).

I really do not understand what AVG Technologies are trying to achieve by allowing this contradictory situation to continue. Especially as many AVG Free users still have real issues with V8 - and the so called “SP1″ update with all the major fixes has still not made it out of beta testing.

While I fully accept the information provided on this forum is given in good faith - and in all probability is correct - I still am deeply troubled by the official AVG Technologies position. They are either extremely poor at communication or they are deliberately providing incorrect information to panic existing users into upgrading. People will only choose a security product because they trust the company that produced it. This current confusion over who to trust is not behaviour one expects from a leading security company.

Interesting to see what “official” response this produces.
