Firefox 3 Download Day 2008 - Don’t Do It!

I have been using Firefox before many of you found it fashionable to jump on board. I have used every version of the now popular browser, having suffered through more bugs and fixes than I care to recall. I am a Firefox loyalist and will be so until the software is pried away from my dying hands. But I find it hard to jump on the Download Day 2008, in which Firefox 3 is trying to set a download record. My questions is why?
Is there some underlying reason that the folks at Mozilla believe that setting a download record is going to bring millions of converts to Firefox 3? How about this. Can Mozilla guarantee that there will be sufficient servers available to handle millions of download requests at once? Is this going to be another one of those frustrating experiences when people can’t connect to the servers and their request is rejected?
IMHO I believe that trying a scheme such as this is going to either frustrate downloaders or suck more bandwidth slowing down the entire system, which could have undesirable consequences.
But what do you think? Is this a good idea or a time and bandwidth waster?
Comments welcome.

I’m sorry but I would have to disagree with you. If you are a firefox “loyalist” as you said you are, then you wouldn’t find the need to rant about not supporting and helping the firefox team achieve another mile stone.

I think that this guy is an obvious MS flunky that is trying to scare people away from downloading Firefox, with little to nothing to back up his accusations with, thats what I think.
His reasoning is a bunch of nonsensical BS, of course Mozilla has enough mirrors to handle a “download day”, thats what mirrors are for.
They handled over a million firefox 2 downloads on launch day without even half the mirrors they have now.
Is Lockergnome allowing morons to post any random bit of drivel that they can think of?
If thats the case, I could just as easily post “Oh noes, don’t download updates from Microsoft, millions of people doing that will bring down the internet!”
“The tubes just can’t take it captain, they’re breaking apart!”
“My god, it’s dead Jim!”

Hello dronix,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I don’t recall exactly the circumstances but MS had some type of a freebie download and their servers were overwhelmed. I also recall that it also caused a slow down on the Internet as well.
I am hoping that Mozilla is taking this into account and that their servers will be able to handle the load. There will be people downloading FF just to be part of something, with no intention of actually using the software.
Hello Ryan,
I respect your opinion. Kindly respect mine.

I respect your opinion but disagree with the fact that that would “slow down the internet”, think about how many millions of GB go through every day between bit torrent, on demand TV networks, web browsing, internet radio services, Media Defender DOS attacking websites that are fully in compliance with the law……
The internet even survived millions of zombie Windows PC’s infected with a Windows worm, DDOS attacking the root DNS servers, it was designed to survive a nuclear war.
So I don’t think a few people downloading Firefox 3, an outstanding piece of software I may add, will cause the internet to come crashing down.

I have no doubt they can handle the bandwidth. As to why: it’s a publicity stunt. Whatever happens, they will be written up all over the place, maybe even some mainstream media like the NYT. Those write-ups then convince a few more people to try Firefox that may not have wanted to otherwise.
So it’s a win for the Firefox team even if their servers crash. The goal is to get people using Firefox instead of IE. This is one way to make that happen.

Hello Denny,
I agree! LOL
Hi Ryan,
I would certainly hope that it would be more than ‘a few people’ downloading Firefox.
Heh Daniel,
I agree about the publicity stunt angle.
One thing we can all agree upon. FF rules!

Ron, I believe the MS craziness you were referring to was a few years ago, and advertised as “Midnight Madness”, as its latest (at the time) IE Browser became available at the stroke of Midnight. One or two releases later, Netscape went belly up. That was quite a challenge for many of us that still had a dial-up service! LOL
Thanks for the heads up on Firefox ver 3 becoming available now. I forgot it was about due anyday now. I assume that one can install this version over the older version?
Thanks again for all your time and effort in keeping this blog alive and well. I might not have exhibited the same response you gave to the “bs” remark! Absolutely no place for that sort of conduct here.

I have to say, I aggree with what you’re saying.
I hadn’t honestly thought about the consequences of the mass of the downloads for Firefox 3.0 being in one single 24 hours slot.
I think Mozilla is just trying to do something for people to feel they are a part of, even veteran users such as yourself, alothugh I hope for their sake they’ve considered the load on the download servers or we’ll be looking at yet another failed world record.
I think we can agree on one thing though, anything that get’s people off of IE can’t be a bad thing

Hello Don,
Thanks for the support. It is sincerely appreciated.
I’m using FF 3 RC1 and it works fine. I would guess that the final should be a stunning piece of software.
Thanks for the reminder about the MS madness.
PS Heh Don, AVG is coming out with a service pack for version 8.
Hi smorrell,
I agree about being a part of a historic moment.
“I think we can agree on one thing though, anything that get’s people off of IE can’t be a bad thing ”
I agree 100%. Kudos!

Mozilla has servers running Jesus OS, God said it’d be cool if everyone downloads in 24 hours, so he gave Mozilla endless bandwidth and super servers with divine power.

Dude I do agree with you and seriously, it doesn’t even matter if noone agrees with your viewpoint ( thats freedom of speech!!)
I just think that the guys who went all out calling U names and all tht kiddish stuff felt so coz u went all-out against Firefox and Mozilla. Only later through your comment answers did u show that U DO support Firefox and are against Internet ExploDer…oops Explorer.
Its simply tht in these few years Firefox has garnered some serious loyalists who simply can’t accept titles like “Firefox 3 Download Day 2008 - Don’t Do It!”
Anyways I really appreciate the efforts you put into this blog

You might not have thought about the server load, but I’m sure they have. If they torrented it, that would be good too.

Well, I got to say that Ron was right. Download day started, and I can’t access the site, nor mozilla download page has a link to version 3.0 . It still shows 2.0.14.
I like the idea, but will have to wait few years for new hyper, mega, ultra giga optics.
Nice try, I guess.

Well, all those that made fun of the “loyalist” for not participating can put their feet in their mouths. As most of you probably know, download day has caused an overflow on Mozilla’s site and it is currently unavailable.
I’m with Ron on this one. Firefox 3 is awesome, but setting a download record is just a marketing tactic to get more diggs and build more hype. As it turns out, they weren’t prepared afterall, and that’s just disappointing.

Well, Firefox Fanboys, it’s the big day and GUESS WHAT? The glorious Firefox planners didn’t have adequate “world record download” plans in place after all this time and cheerleading - the servers are down and 3 is not being delivered. Brilliant.

[…] So today was the big day. The day when Firefox 3 final became available to the masses. The day the Mozilla team was hoping to set a world record for downloads. Which is kind of strange. It has been stated there is no current download record, so I guess their intent was to make this a first. But back on June 3rd I wrote about not joining in. I indicated that I had some serious doubts that the servers could handle the load. [See my article here.] […]
