Microsoft Issues Apple Safari Warning - Don’t Use It

Microsoft’s KB953818 deals with the threat of a combined attack for those using Apple’s Safari browser on a windows platform. Microsoft has issued the advisory and is suggesting Safari users refrain from using the browser until a fix is issued. In the advisory it further states:

Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a blended threat that allows remote code execution on all supported versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista when Apple’s Safari for Windows has been installed. Safari is not installed with Windows XP or Windows Vista by default; it must be installed independently or through the Apple Software Update application. Customers running Safari on Windows should review this advisory.

At the present time, Microsoft is unaware of any attacks attempting to exploit this blended threat. Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate measures to protect our customers. This may include providing a solution through a service pack, the monthly update process, or an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customers needs.

Apple has not issued a press release or any information concerning the problem.

Comments are welcome.

I’ve never used Safari, even on my Windows boxen, as it is a staggeringly stripped down browser, that consumes a lot of RAM and is painfully slow, and spams a lot of links to Apple’s website, and there is no good, obvious way to block ads, despite all my looking around the only one I found was called “Pith Helmet”, and it was only for Mac, and was $10 shareware.

So about the only people on Windows that have Safari are the ones that got it trojaned in through Apple Updates, because they had iTunes, that depends on Quicktime to function, in order to sync their iPod, that swallowed the spider that ate the fly.

Seriously, Apple will eat your hard drive with crap that doesn’t work well and was unrelated to what you were wanting to do, so I wonder how culpable Apple is, now that their buggy software is creating a security hole on millions of computers who’s users never requested it installed.
