I’ve done with with Ubuntu 7.04, 7.10, and 8.04. It took longer to get it with 7.10 because of the amount of publicity that Ubuntu itself received with that version. 8.04 was in my mailbox about 3 weeks after I requested it. It comes in a typical small, padded mail envelope and the CD itself is in a red, bi-fold cardboard like CD-envelope. Ubuntu ships some stickers along with it as well; I guess they are trying to be like Apple.

While it could easily be downloaded and burned using the ISO file, when you are advertising the product to someone that is looking for a way to recycle an old PC, having the actual, official CD comes in handy.

I’ve used ShipIt since 2004 to get my Ubuntu discs, it’s really nice but can take a few weeks, I’d like to remind everyone that it is a free download as well through FTP or Bittorrent, and you can install CDBurnerXP (freeware) to burn the ISO image, if you simply don’t want to wait.

I should also mention that the latest official kernel breaks hibernate and suspend on a quite a few systems, but the kernel packages in Hardy-Proposed fix this (kernel 2.6.24-19 or higher), so if you experience this issue, I recommend enabling Hardy-Proposed in the repositories menu in Synaptic, hit the reload button, close Synaptic, open the update manager (which should be in the system tray), grab the linux kernel packages and have it install them, then disable that repo and reload.

Pain in the butt, but it’s one of the more minor aggravations I’ve had in 15 years with a computer.

Fedora also does a Free Disk program, but it’s limited to about 100 people every month, and if you don’t apply to get a disc within the first couple days, you can forget it until the next month.

The Fedora Free Media Program is really for people that can’t afford a disc or don’t have the bandwidth to download one.

I’ve tried Fedora, I gave up on it because it’s very obvious if you use it for any length of time, that it’s become the missile testing range for what ultimately becomes Red Hat Linux, so they really don’t care about breaking things, and they really don’t provide even any semi-supported way to get proprietary media codecs, libdvdcss, or video card drivers, wifi firmware, etc.

And you can use rpm.livna.org, but this is still a bad thing to do because every time there’s a new kernel, it breaks all your stuff, so it’s perpetually broken and clearly not suitable for an end user, and Fedora 9 is just now starting to have video drivers again since Fedora broke them for no reason at all other than to have the latest x.org

In short, Ubuntu is for end users, and Fedora is for people that are flipping nuts and/or capable of making it behave.

If you absolutely need a Red Hat-ish Linux experience, I suggest CentOS, it’s built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux source RPM’s, it will be a helluva lot more stable than anything to crawl out of the Fedora Project.

Shipit is one of the reasons I stuck with Ubuntu. A long time ago, I didn’t have high speed Internet acsess. It doesn’t matter anymore, but to give a person Ubuntu, you’d want to give them a professionally pressed disc. Mine comes in about 3 weeks as well. It’s awesome!

I used “shipit” for Ubuntu 7.10 and the latest Ubuntu (and Kubuntu) hardy Heron. The latest also came in about 3 weeks,…and I have had some pretty good luck with it. However,….with just a little dialup ISP,…and older computer,…the downloading the media codecs and the Upgrades are almost out of the question. I opted for buying an inexpensive copy of Linux Mint from an online dealer,…and am very happy with it.
