HP & Compaq Wireless Problems? Enhanced 24 Month Warranty Is Available

Back in October 2007 I posted an article referencing wireless problems on certain HP and Compaq models here.

Reader Donna  posted this comment this morning:

For everyone with a problem with HP Laptops check out this link. Have it ready if you call HP for support because they won’t tell you about it. You will have to sent them a link to it to prove you know there is an 24 month service enhancement warranty on these notebooks because of a hardware issue. They have to fix it for free but will try to charge you for the repair if you are unaware of the warranty program. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=3259108 How low is that?!!!

Check the list of model numbers to determine if you qualify for a free repair. You will need to locate your service tag number on the unit. On the site it also states:

Service enhancements and free shipping:

  • Free shipping

If your notebook needs to be returned to HP for repair, the shipping costs are free. HP will immediately send you a postage paid container in which to send in your computer, and we will pay the return shipping.

  • Post-service warranty

After HP repairs your notebook, you will continue to be covered by the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement program for 24 months after the start of your original standard limited warranty, or 90 days after receiving your free repair, whichever is later.

So there you have it.

Comments welcome.

Hope this helps:

I got my computer back after sending it in over the wireless problem, HP emailed me and stated I owed them $300+ for repairs, I called and informed them no way it was a known problem and I was told no cost they said ok it will be sent out within 2 days and I finally got it today, hard drive appears to be a new one, mother board is new and wireless is working at the present time. Plus a paper with the computer says I have 90 warranty on exchanged service.

Hello Deb,
Thanks for letting us know. I hope that the repair they made lasts longer than 90 days. All the best.

f503au wireless is intermittent or wont load on bootup.
I have tried to boot in safe mode with networking but still the problem is intermittent.

So try this if you have access to ethernet.
boot up the computer with wireless on.
after the computer has booted and you see no wireless

plug in the ethernet connector with the ethernet already on.
suddenly the wireless comes on too?

go figure seems like it’s a software issue.

other things to try.

reinstall drivers with ethernet off and wireless off. as the autoupdate feature of vista and compaq drivers doesnt tell you to do this before it updates. if necessary take out the card when you update the broadcom drivers if it will let you.

so something installs but it cant recognise the wireless broadcom card because of a software glitch. it does however recognise the ethernet so when you plug it in it also somehow sees the wireless card maybe someone at HP/compaq could solve this for us.

i have as a precaution also activated the vlan enabled in the properties tab.

also while the card is out or turned off and ethernet disconnected reinstall the nvidia networking controller.

just got off the chat with there support- no help for me and the wireless problem- they said the warranty ended on march 10th- 23days ago- what a joke- computer needs a new motherboard to fix the no wireless problem- still works other than that- my model was part of the recall but the extra warranty has expired- anyone got an idea? tried to get a supervisor or even get them to provide the part and i pay the labor- no luck- probably wont buy an hp/compaq again- the model F533US WITH A KNOWN ISSUE AND THEY WON’T FIX IT!

Hi Justin,
Have you tried all of the suggestions above?

You could also buy a USB wireless adapter.

Last option is to file a small claims.

yeah i thought of the usb adaptor, but from what i read this is the beginning of the death of the motherboard- i tried to get them to pay for the part and i’d cover the labor- no go- i just figured i’d share the experience, i won’t buy a compaq/ hp product. i also wondered if anyone had an idea on how to get them to budge- this is a known issue and i feel they should replace the motherboard- probably wont go the small claims route- but i went through it all with the guy in the chat- i reinstalled drivers, updated bios, i even tried another wireless card- no go- i will install a usb wireless adaptor as a last resort until the computer dies- thanks for letting me rant

Hello, I have the compaq v3000 with the motherboard problem too. Just this morning, my screen went black with only the sound bar light, cd, and hdd working. also, the wireless card seems to be not working since its colored orange instead of green. I’m guessing the problem has to do something with the video and network card. I called them asked for repairs but i am too out of both the original and extended warranty. they wanted $300 btw.

What Do You Think?
